what kind of diy skin/hair products do you swear by? i love this kinda stuff so i'm always looking to try new stuff out.
for a while, i've been using coconut oil as a hair mask for taming my bleached mane and also for moisturizing my face when i've broken out, and castor oil for lengthening my eyelashes. i've tried a few diff diy products but these are the two that have been the most beneficial to me. i used to fuck around with diff oils on my face but that was a waste of time and money. nonetheless, every once in awhile i use sweet almond oil or grapeseed oil to moisturize my face, depending on what's going on with my skin.
i just started using (heavily diluted) apple cider vinegar as a toner - we'll see how that pans out.
I want to try tea tree oil mixed in shampoo as an alternative to dandruff shampoo.
My favorite place to buy oils & butters is from Mountain Rose Herbs. Wholesale Supplies Plus is cheaper, not as ethical. I use travel containers for my shampoo so I can put a bit of coconut oil in them (1/5 coconut oil) Mango butter is by favorite body butter right now, but I think it changes with the weather.
ooh i know people use tea tree oil for acne but i didn't know you could use it for hair. does it moisturize your scalp or something?
sadly i cannot afford to shop ethically for my oils :( i just stick to grocery store brands. but coconut oil in shampoo sounds promising.. how do you find it's helped your hair? (also omg mango butter sounds divine! i didn't even know it was a thing)
It helps keep the frizzes away, also lightly nourishes my scalp :3 It makes your shampoo super rich and lathery too. -However!- It will make the shampoo runny. If you add the oil to your shampoo leave some room to shake it up. You can use it right away, after two days it should be completely mixed. I /think/ some sort of reaction takes place.
I've made cold-process soap before too, however that costs a lot of time & money. Very interesting and scientific. ;)
I use a mx of Herbal distillates and aloe vera as face treatment, ricinus oil for my lashes, coconut oil as skin care, make my own St John's wort (interesting translation... :D) oil every year for scars or little wounds or also just as skin care and make my own deep conditioner with an egg, honey, yoghurt, olive oil and a few drops lavender or bergamot oil.
thats awesome, I should use more aloe vera in my routine. That deep conditioner sounds divine too :o
One of the causes of dandruff are spores on our scalp. Tea tree oil basically murders the crap out of the spores. Since I've recently found out I'm allergic to mold, spores are probably the cause of my dandruff. Tea tree is a great purifier. I used to have a lotion made for diabetics for fingertips (blood sugar finger pricking) that contained tea tree oil. It was SO EXPENSIVE but that stuff was goooooooood.
thank you for this information - i'm gonna try this shit out tn (:
yeeees that deep conditioner sounds super luxurious <3
damn hopefully the teatree oil works for you :( i imagine being allergic to dust gets in the way of a lot of things.
Oh man, I love DIY beauty stuff. It's just so much fun to play around with!
I think my favorite thing right now is DIY lip balm, since it's so easy to make. It's basically beeswax, coconut oil, + your favorite other oil (I used either cocoa butter or almond oil). The ratio is basically a third of each - you melt it all together, add in some drops of essential oil for scent and it's great. I find it to be a lot more moisturizing than store bought ones. :)
I've heard that baby powder is a good substitute for dry shampoo. They serve the same function: absorb the oil. Although I've tried this method, I've never bought or used dry shampoo, so I don't have anything to compare against. Have you tried this? What are your thoughts on it?
Thought I'd put some input into this.... yes actually- baby powder works great as a dry shampoo. I use it all the time. Some people worry it might be bad to breathe in the "dust" created by the powder- but I don't really see how (bad for babies to inhale, but their lungs are littler). But the ingredient that does the absorbing is the corn starch. So you can also use just plain corn starch (which is cheaper than a bottle of baby powder). I've heard some people add some essential oils for a bit of a nice smell, but I find this unnecessary since my hair doesn't stink when it gets oily. So yeah, there you go. =)
Oh, I see :) Very informative
my fave soap I use it for my face and body is welleda callendula
I use tea tree oil mixed with shampoo every third day. Just a few drops...
I use castor oil mixed with coconut oil for dry hair and thin hair.
Um and shampoo and conditioner from Jason is good :)
I have super sensitive skin...acne scarring (tea tree oil and vitamin e) Keritosis (type of eczema) dry skin, dandruff and thinning hair.
I use the weleda sea buckthorn lotion and for very dry areas (elbows feet knees etc) I use the weleda skin food.
I mix up my skin routine with coconut oil and vit e mixed with aloe vera.
Basically I am into all this mess hahaha
I was reading about making your own make up and how it is SO much cheaper. Not too sure if I am there yet LOL
I buy as many of these items as possible from www.vitacost.com It is the best...very very good on prices!! I am poor-ish, so I have to watch my DIY obsession.
Honey is a great mask on its own. There are so many combinations of foods for your skin eggs etc. I try to keep it simple (as possible)
If I am wearing a matte lipstick I like to use sugar and honey as a pre scrub for my lips. then burts bees honey lipchap. Vitamin e (oil) is AMAZING for removing all types of lipsticks. A quick smear wait about 30 seconds and wipe off. It is unreal how it works. It is also moistureizing so that a big bonus!!
My skin and hair has made a huge turn around!! I also now am taking supplements for my skin and hair. Hope it works :D
Oh, also coconut oil has a natural SPF!!
