Heya! I've been trying to send out gifts to help new users get started by just going through whoever has posted in the welcome forums. I'm not sure if other people do the same thing, but I thought it might be nice to have a new member list every week to see who else has joined and help them get connected. Edit: since no one read the second post--Have an OPTION of being added to the list upon signup and opt removal/ add after signup.
it would be interesting to see a list, though I don't know how necessary it is. there's always the welcomes & introductions forums but obviously not everyone posts there.
I find myself ambivalent about this.
Part of the success in having fun of playing here for me is interacting with other players. I doubt I would have continued to play here nine years ago if I hadn't been part of a Neopets Guild that liked playing here more than there. (Subeta is still way more fun, btw).
But if a new user isn't posting in Welcomes & Introductions or Help & Questions, they may not want your help, may be satisfied with playing alone, or they may just not be into Subeta all that much yet. Someone interacting with them just because they're new might feel bothersome to them.
The idea is sweet, but I don't really agree with it. I joined not too long ago (have been on several hiatuses since), and I would have found this off putting.
The tutorial shows how to make sP pretty easily (games and quests) and the forums have guides everywhere, so I don't think new players need help in terms of wealth. Some (like me) don't find it fun when being handed things for free (it is a game afterall!) Some (like me) come online to avoid social interaction (only posting for the Blue Building), and would not appreciate being sent messages throughout the week.
It is a well intended idea of course, but I think it would be better to just gift/message those who post in the Newbie section. :)
Yeah, I feel like this would just be a nuisance to those who don't want to be recognized. I mean nowadays I won't shut the hell up, but when I first joined I didn't go on the forums for several months. I managed to figure out the site pretty well though and I can't say I necessarily would have appreciated random people sending me things just because I was new, before I really knew what to do with those things or if I needed them.
I can see the point of someone coming and not really wanting attention, but I also think there are people who might not think to post in the welcome forums. Perhaps just adding an option on signup would fix this fir ninja users, so people could select if they wanted to be added to the list or not. I tend to gift new users basic items to get them started so they they can start learning on their own how to use items and make HAs even if they don't have the time for games and quests. I don't generally message new users, since there are indeed guides out there, but a LOT of the forum guides are kind of outdated and lack important info (quests included).
If Subeta had a open list of new users when I'd joined, I would have spent my first few days hoping as hard as I could for the list to update so I could disappear off it.
I'm wondering if a newbie help/connection/giveaway thread would be just as effective without possibly compromising some new users' sense of anonymity. Those newbies who would be interested in connecting/gaining an item boost could post, and those newbies who didn't wouldn't have to.
TL;DR - I think it's a nice idea to want to help, but I'm not a fan of an open newbie ID list.
No Support.
If new members want to interact with people, they can go to the forums. I wouldn't want people just randomly messaging me because they saw I was new trying to be helpful. If someone needs help or has a question there are so many resources for that. I can see this being super annoying for people.
You could achieve the same ends by hosting an ongoing topic for newbies in the Giveaways subforum. The intent behind this is good, but I can also see how it could be taken as patronizing.

Im glad I found this thread, I'm one of those people who sometimes send a few basic gifts to new people, and sometimes comment them, I hadnt really thought they might feel uncomfortable about it, I'm not a pushy person but I like to help folks, and Ive made some very good friends from it, but reading this it looks like its not very popular lol. I too was rather shy of the forums for a while, but wanted that blue building access so that really helped push me out there.
I agree with the majority here, while its a nice idea, I do think it can be off-putting to many people for the reasons already stated.
I think it depends how you find the new people you are gifting and messaging. If they've posted in the welcome forum, they are reaching out and I don't think they would mind responses like yours. The main issue here is people who want to be anonymous, who want to learn a bit about the site first before unlurking (if they ever do). The people who responded here are talking about a public list of new people who may not choose to post on the welcome forum. This is very different from gifting people who choose to post.

I'd rather see a better tutorial and an automated newbie item pack to go along with the clothing set you pick. (Something like a random RSable t1 weapon, plushie, beanbag, book, and five random items). For one thing, I think it would help a lot of people figure things out if the tutorial was a little better (iirc it didn't even work for me), and it would make the site look more pro. But also, lots of people don't want to talk to other players at all, or while at least while they're new. I personally like to play solo for a while in a new game before I start talking with people, so I have a chance to get up to speed and I don't feel totally awkward.
Publishing a newbie list would I think lead new players to being gift bombed right away. This might be nice for some, but they might not even know what to do with those items, or be put in a position where they feel guilty for being unable to reciprocate.
It's a sweet idea, but no support, sorry.
