Last year it ran from Dec. 31 to Jan 6.

The year before that it ran from Dec 25 to Jan 2.

We'll just have to wait and see.

The free shop is a special shop that opens usually after Luminaire or when the admins decide to hold a special event. They normally announce it in the News.

Will someone please explain to me how this shop works? Does everyone get some free items or do we have to compete for them (meaning we have to be very fast to grab something)?

Yes, it's like a competition, but the shop usually stocks pretty frequently. Although you won't know what you're getting until after you've clicked. The items all show up as purple gift boxes or something, and then once you grab it then it tells you what you got.

How long is it open? And will there be an announcement?

Yeah there should be an announcement if/when they decide to open it this year. Kind of hard to say how long it will be open, but probably at least a few days usually around New Year's day. Although it's been rather inconsistent in the past, so we'll just have to wait and see.
