Just curious to see if there's anyone here on Subeta who is into 'prepping'.

I'm definitely not as hardcore as a lot of people are. I don't have huge hoards of food and weapons and other stuff. But I do plan on starting a few things. It's all starting with one machete actually, lol. I found a really good deal on a combination machete/saw today so I bought it. Got a magnesium fire starter too. I'm basically going to just make a 'go bag' to start - something I can grab and gtfo if I have to. I'm going to add a first aid kit, some freeze-dried food, clothes, sewing kit, fishing kit, solar charger for my cell phone so I can have music even if the cell towers get fried, a book that I'm making with edible plants and plants that can be used for medical purposes, a mirror for signaling, a flashlight with a bunch of batteries for it (or a solar flashlight if I can get one), something to use to purify water, a couple of water bottles, and probably a bunch of other things I haven't thought of yet. I do want to get a wood staff too, like Morgan of The Walking Dead. I have a tent and sleeping bag that I can stash with it too. I also would like to take some self-defense classes, maybe some martial arts classes, first-aid classes, and any other prepping-related classes I think might help.

I'm not a gun person, so I won't be having or training with guns. Firstly, I just don't like them. I think I would have the skill for guns, because of my years of video gaming, lol. And I know I could use one if it came down to it though. Secondly, there's the ammo issue. What happens when you run out and can't make more? Then you're basically screwed. I can always sharpen my machete/sword/knife.

So what are you doing? Are you a hardcore prepper or just casual like me? Why are you prepping if you do or why not if you don't? Etc.?

My parents are preppers. They aren't hardcore like the people on tv either. We just have a modest amount of nonperishable food stored up, and we each have our own "bug out bag" filled with essentials that we can just grab and go if there's ever an emergency. We have machetes for each of us as well.

My dad has always been a gun collector, so we have a fair amount of arms. Those aren't really related to their prepping though. My dad's had them even before he got into this whole thing. lol

I'm not really into it, but it makes them feel good, so I just go with it. haha

That's cool. The way I see it, if preppers are right about what they (we?) are doing, then they're safe. If they're wrong, the only thing they're out is a little money and time. It's a fair payoff to me.

I do want to do this just to be on the safe side but I haven't started yet. I totally want to get a katana though cause why noott! HAHA! It would be light weight and one of the best weapons you could probably be carrying.

I feel the same about the gun issue. I mean it'll be fine at first but it also depends on what catastrophe is going on. I mean if we're talking zombie apocalypse then a gun would bring a hoard so probably not the best idea. Knives and a good sharpening stone would be the absolute best thing in my mind.

Also you should add warm clothes to your kit. Like something that packs small but is super warm just in case of winter ya know?

I'm a little tiny bit obsessed with learning how to survive, not really with experiencing it. I biked for a year in the tropical weather and learned a lot. Water is your life saver. Cleaning water is important. Therefore fire...fire is the main thing. If you watch man, woman, wild you'll see the importance of fire in all situations. The guy said if you only take one thing with you, let it be a lighter because it can save your life. Not sure I'd really call myself a prepper but I'd like to be someday. Just in the way of prepping for storms and things like that. Normal stuff. You should know your climate's most disastrous weather possibilities and get ready for that. But you should also be ready with opposite things. If you're used to the heat you wont be ready for the cold and our climate is changing and unpredictable.

I am not, but I joke about it. I have t1 diabetes and a whole lot of other health problems so I'd die right away, but my main plan is get to my parents' place because my dad has guns and ammo and probably a machete or two (for deer skinning).

I'm not exactly one but I am getting a small backpack set up with some stuff like first aid, flint and steel, rope, those water tablet things to purify water to start off, just in case shit hits the fan.

We have guns, some tactical survival kits, and bug out bags and what not. We're not super serious about it though. I used to know a lady who was waaay crazy about it. She was elderly and always thought here would be some sort of anarchy against the government. When she finally passed away we were tasked with helping clean out her house, we'd find guns everywhere, like under her mattress, underwear drawer, behind doors, in corners behind furniture, under the cushions of her couch, in her desk and bullets everywhere too. lol Like I was cleaning out her china cabinet and found teacups with bullets in them. Each cup with a different caliber. She'd also stockpile lots of odd things too, like every cup she ever got from gas stations and what not she kept, she might of also been a weird hoarder where she only hoarded certain things too. She also had TONS of like tampons and maxi-pads even though she was in her 70s, tin foil, ziplock bags. She kept tons of canned and dry goods except by the time she passed away they were all long since expired. It was really odd cleaning out her house to say the least. lol
