My bf and I taught our gf how to play magic which is a card game if you dont know. Something that is really annoying is that she gets really upset when we bring out "mean" cards. Like, thats what they do? To the point where she gives up and cries. She takes the game so seriously and its really annoying. Ive been playing for about a year and a half and Ive learned to not take the games seriously lol.

Idk what to do about it

Some people really can't handle competition well. It sucks to be the newbie and then feel like, "Welp, Now I'm losing. Again. All because of that one card!"

Does she hold the grudge afterwards? How long does she keep it up?

Either way, the best thing you can do is be honest. Tell her outright, "I understand it's infuriating to lose, but throwing a fit is no way to handle it and it makes me not want to play against you because I can't play the way I want too without you acting this way. If it's going to continue, we need to find another game to play, because you can not seem to handle losing."

I've had my boyfriend have to tell me the same thing with Age of Empires. I still get upset but I've learned to control how I get upset. Rather than lashing out at him, when I feel overwhelmingly upset, I call my last game. "Alright, that's it for me. I'm out!" and I try to remain positive and switch to something I can do well in or feel happy/noncompetitive about. And he understands now too when I do that and supports me. "Okay hun, have fun on such and such!" I also explained to him that I would like constructive feedback where I can improve or what I'm doing wrong or right, etc. This way I can get better, albeit slowly over time. Maybe this is something your GF would appreciate as well.

Feeling Down? Need a Friend? Message Me! I am a Safe-Space. I will not judge, I will be patient, & you can tell me anything. I can offer advice, or I can just be there. It's your call. But please, Make the Call. I'm always willing to be there for you. Love, Chiibi Dearling

Oh man, I can sympathize with your gf because I'm the same way. My bf got me into playing YuGiOh because he's really into it, and I just can't handle it. I would end up crying after every single tournament because it's just so frustrating when you work so hard and practice so much, just to lose to a single OP card.

I ended up telling him I was just gonna quit the game, and I haven't played in a few months now. For me, playing card games (including Magic) was more stress than it was fun. After I quit, I realized that I never really enjoyed it that much and just did it to make my bf happy.

I would talk to her and find out if she actually enjoys playing or if she's just playing to make you two happy. Maybe she's in the same boat that I was. If she is enjoying the game and wants to continue, try to find ways to help her take the game less seriously, or teach her how better ways to play out of those situations. Don't get upset at her for being upset because it will only make the situation worse. Just help her calm down and take a break. If she isn't enjoying the game, ask her if she has any suggestions about other games she might enjoy that you all can learn together. One game that I find less frustrating is Force of Will. It's really similar to Magic, but it's a little more fair. There are still a lot of broke cards, but it's easier to counter them and keep your advantage. There are a ton of good, and cheap, decks that are pretty evenly matched. She might enjoy that more.

Thanks, thats actually really helpful. I learned the game from my friend that has been playing for over 18 years, and I got upset sometimes too, but he would tell me to improve my deck to be able to handle anything and everything. She does sometimes hold a grudge and it honestly makes me not want to be around her after. She always tells me to play how I normally do but then gets upset when I do lol. UGH

Shes still really into it, likes to play, but tells me and our bf to not play so mean. Its really annoying because I'm used to playing with people that can handle the burn

Aww, maybe it'd be best to not have her play the games if she's gonna get upset, or set aside nicer decks for less serious games with her.

I know some people who really hate competitive games and actually cry and whatever, hahaha. It happens.

My husband when we just started dating; he taught me how to play MTG. I ran a solid black deck and he used white/blue. Now I use a black/red and he uses all kinds of decks.

Also, it was Yu-Gi-Oh that had us meet each other. =D

Did you guys buy pre done decks or make all your own? If you all have enough cards encourage her to make her own decks and learn how to adjust them and pre think how to make it work if her "key" function of the deck were to be countered.

I myself have a pretty vicious green/black deck. All it takes is ONE card to start mass token making on every turn, another to bump ALL tokens to an automatic 3/2, and one more yet to gain me 1 life PER creature on field... but that takes luck and things working for that one 3 card combo to play out. While it is my main part of my deck I also made sure to have other solid creatures and instants and the like to use.

So maybe if you guys are able to do so help her make a deck she feels good about and encourage her to look for ways to adjust on her own. If you guys don't have many cards, yet or just ran with premade ones, my suggestion is to buy the deck builders kit or two. Only $20 each and SOOOO many cards, and then if possible buy a few random packs. Sometimes some shops have 3 packs (random) sealed together with a promo card for $12 or less. Or when I know I can spare the cash I buy the fat packs or the holiday packs which are $25-$40 depending on what it is. Or if you all have a local card shop see how much they charge for full unopened pack boxes, about $90-$200+ depending, and you all pay 1/3 and randomly grab your own packs. A friend and I bought a box of Modern Masters which can give you guys a shot at older cards.

There's many options to help her build a deck she can feel good about. After that it's on HER to accept the loss or win of a game.

FINALLY GOT THE 15K WARDROBE DONE!!!!! Next up gutting and selling it.
