Hello there all. I've been meaning to learn how to build a computer for years now. I finally can afford to for once but am at a loss as to how to go about it. Any tips for a completely clueless person. I'd love the help and at the very least it'd be nice to meet some new people even if they can't provide any help. <3

hi!!! i build my own computer a few years ago. well, actually not really, the store did it for me. if you are completely clueless, it is easier to find a local shop, buy and let them assemble for you. they know what is compatible with what and the requirements. and you can get some discount too. the 'consultation' and assembly is free. at least that is the case for me. they do a good job with cable management too.

i did research the internet of 'powerful' things i want but end up did not get them anyway because they are not available locally. and as it turns out, i do not need them :)

so what i learn is you definitely want a good processor. probably not the best at current time because they can be super expensive. compare the price, the best usually is a huge step in price compared to second or third best. for me this is more important than graphic card. i sometime do non-game stuff with my PC and the processor is the one that always working hard, whether it is game or other applications.

graphic card is not so important for me since i don't play recent games. the most recent that i frequently play is skyrim only. and i only run on medium graphic to reduce room heat and save some electricity. only use best graphic setting to take screenshot anyway :P so find what game do you want to play and buy something above the recommended requirement.

for RAM, you are most likely won't be needing too much. i bought 2 of 8gb but end up taking one out because i never reach 8gb of usage. i think the most i've seen is about 5-6gb. normal when gaming is about 3-4gb.

for motherboard, you really need to make sure that they can fit CPU, GPU and RAM of your choice. chances are they are most likely can if you buy everything recent. just as cautionary because my friend years ago bought some things that are not compatible, luckily, the shop accept that excuse for return.

power supply is very important. powerful CPU and GPU will draw a lot of power and will need high capacity power supply. not enough power, it won't turn up or some thing won't be running. my friend once upgrade his GPU and it wasn't working properly. he thought his GPU is faulty, but it turns out that his power supply doesn't supply enough power.

for hard drive, i only use regular one. it is ok for me but i heard that SSD is really fast. if you can afford it, go for it.

keep some money for monitor, mouse, keyboard, and speaker. they are important too.

i personally did not buy wifi card, instead use usb wifi adaptor with long cable. that way i can position the receiver at best signal and can still hide my PC.

many shops provide help online for beginners as part of their sale. give them your budget and they will list you the best items you can get. then start research from there.

wow i write long. in essence, you will want to buy something that can handle your requirement comfortably. so don't go minimum requirement.

Don't get sucked into the 4k resolution madness. It's a joke right now. Things aren't made for it and it's not standard enough to have to yet.
