I just saw where someone mentioned an Autumn theme sidebar and I was wondering if someone could give me some more details about this, please?

It's a hidden theme that you can unlock for throwing 1,000 items into the bonfire.

Oh pretty, thank you!!! Is this new this year? I wonder if it will be retired. I'm only about 1/4 of the way to 1000. :(

I'm pretty sure I got it at least 2 years ago, but it could be older than that even. I doubt it will be retired after this year. Most of the event achievements like that tend to stick around for a while.

How do we get this when every time I toss something I get this...

"You toss the item into the bonfire, but before it can be consumed by flames, a laughing jollin leaps forth and grabs it. He's gone before you can react.

Having received no offering, the Red Rreign does not materialize."

That's from a new battle challenger that was released last night. He'll only steal your things until he actually challenges you, it should only take a few times. Once you get him as a challenger, he'll stop stealing your items and you can continue throwing them into the bonfire normally.
