I see that there's an achievement for beating Cursed Effigy during Fireside... but I don't seem to have them as a challenger. Do I need to unlock them somewhere?

You have to use the Iron Fireside Lantern to unlock the Cursed Effigy as a battle challenger. It can be bought from the Millionaire Center for 8mil sp right now.

Do you know much about battling? Do you think Meilo could beat him?

I'm not that knowledgeable, so I could be wrong, but I think Meilo's stats are just too low to beat him. You could check with someone more experienced with battling if you want to know for sure.

i could be wrong on this, but i think iron fireside lantern unlocks Cursed Effigy, the Tormented. not the Cursed Effigy during fireside. also they have different achievement, maybe? i'm don't know how to unlock the fireside Cursed Effigy though. somehow i already have him lol

If it helps, I saw awhile back that if your pet's speed is around/higher than the opponent's, you should be able to beat them. I don't know how accurate it is but that's about what I go with, sometimes I try for higher because I've stopped training so I feel like I might as well give it a shot

[edit] Also 's battling blog says you need the Red Rreign to destroy an inventory item of yours to unlock the (non-Tormented) Cursed Effigy, which currently seems to be broken?

Oh, you're right. There's two of them and they even look exactly the same. My bad.

If you've unlocked him, the Cursed Effigy can be found under the 'event' tab here:

Your pet can't beat either Effigy yet. Also something to note, you should stop training your level for a while, it's way too high. Your other stats should be in the 1000s with that level. You train your other stats until you can't anymore, level is the very last thing to train. You can train your other stats 2.5 times higher than your level.

I do have him as a challenger in the event tab, thanks! But not strong enough to win yet.

All level does is allow more training for the other stats. It also raises your training time and cost :(
