Sorry this may be a stupid question, but what is the difference between a comment and a post?

In the Human Avatar Item Identification thread, one of the rules is if I want to say thanks I should comment instead of posting my thanks and making the thread needlessly longer. I have no idea what it means to comment or how to go about all that ;n;

A post is made on the forums. To comment someone you go to their profile and find the comment box (it's on the far right of your profile, for instance) and send them a message through that medium. c:

It means to leave a comment on someone's profile c: If you go to their profile, there should be a comment box somewhere so you can leave them a comment, other people can view it publicly so it's not the same as an sMail but it's a little more private and it's easier than sMailing (and in cases like the thread you mentioned, it keeps the thread clean. But you could also just go back and edit a ping to the user into your post instead c: )
