When the heck did the pet ids go from 3.8mil to nearly 4.4mil range? I was just looking in the pound when I noticed a pet with an id over 4mil.. I thought it was 400k but no...
Just wondering if this was part of a pet doom recently or another glitch that caused the ids to go bonkers? [edit] Sorry I just double checked... the ids are nearing 5 mil....
hmm, my most recently created pet (created september 20) has an id of ~3.7 million... i mean, i'm sure lots of new pets have been created thanks to the mc pet slots, but over a million in a month? there's not even enough users to make that many pets. then again, i don't really understand how the pet ids work in the first place - 'about subeta' states there are ~300k pets on site, but if that's true then where did the other 4.7 million go? as far as i know, pets are only actually deleted in very rare circumstances.
I'm now thinking that this recent lag that just hits like a truck most of the time MIGHT be responsible for a lot of higher IDs by mistake... Just really odd to see the numbers jump up THAT high though...
I created one yesterday and it looks like the id is 4784605. interesting tho
Hope someone hasn't been creating thousands of pets with malicious intent.
Curiously, the Subeta homepage says we have: "351,468 Adopted Virtual Pets"
So where are the almost 4.5mil other pets? Surely we haven't cleared that many pets over the years.. then again it's been like 11-12 years since the site opened.. but aren't pets only purged from the adoption centre? Does that mean that 4.5m pets have been purged from the AC?
I guess it was caused by a bug, not the first time that it happened. Afaik there aren't Pets in the 2mil range either.
Well, I remember when the AC had like, 15k pets a while ago, and they purged, so not totally impossible, though it creeps me out to think theres only 400k active pets? maybe they could reset the numbers (it would be crazy XD) so we could have the chance to aquire super lower ids again? c': (kind of impossible but... why not? xD)
Now we have pets in the 5 mil range...... it really seems odd...
@ Virus This was happening before, with large jumps between IDs when we were approaching 2,000,000 :(
Cue a large list of ID numbers and dates :P
(I know there was a mention before that if someone tried to make a pet with an existing name, then it skips that ID number, but these skips seem larger than that....)
.... and 1,690,774 pets created in just under 3 months o.O (August - November.... roughly 18,786 new pets a day - even allowing for the small skips, that is definitely not right!)
4,408,106 created 4th November 4,408,107 - 4,408,200 (no such pets)
5,000,000 - 5,000,400 (no such pets) - at least 400 skipped IDs o.O
will edit with more when I actually find another pet ID in the low 5 mills!

I have a pet with an ID of 5197315, I created him on 11/8
Now it seems that the IDs are nearing 6mil... Saw a few pets in the pound with IDs at around 5.8mil.
Sorry to bother you, do you happen to know what is causing this huge spike in ID numbers? It really does not feel like a pet bcreation boom.... nearly 2mil pets in a short time, seems so unlikely.
I wonder if this is down to the lag (which also appears to be causing problems with the "books read" total) - there's definitely huge amounts of IDs being skipped :(

This matters enough to ping ???
There's an infinite amount of numbers out there.
Before, a pet ID was used every time a pet was created.
Now, IDs are used whenever an attempt to create a pet is done. Due to lag over the past week, I can suspect a lot of failed attempts at creating pets happened

is correct - it's failed creation attempts.
The reason the numbers are going crazy is because of name clearings - think of how many times a user smashes the refresh button on a create page at 3:00 every day when a name is clearing. Every single refresh takes a pet ID, times however many people are trying, and accounts clear every single day. It took us years to reach 1mil pets but since this glitch started the numbers have been climbing at a ridiculous rate.

That's my pet Nevie, I made her two days ago. Welp. That's certainly interesting!
This is all from a bug I reported about a long time ago when pet IDs hit about a ...million, I think. Basically when someone goes to create a pet - regardless if a pet is actually created - an ID is assigned to that pet (or "would be" pet), hence skipping numbers (which would be amplified during a clearing). I'd show you guys a link to the topic, but for whatever reason my recent topics go back to 2006 right now and there is only a few of them (which I certainly made more topics than that in the last nine years lol)
They were probably lost when the forums were changed over.
Small side note, there was an account that had been set to clear just before this thread was made. It didn't, but I'm sure I wasn't the only person spamming the create button for names that day.
Either there were some really sought after names being cleared, or this really is a bug (142k pets attempted to be created on average a day?)
yeah, I remembered Scarsdale mentioning something like that before, but with at least 400 pet IDs skipped (5,000,000 - 5,000,400 I got bored checking for pets after that number, and didn't check the few before 5mill), which even with the lag seems a bit odd to not have even one successfully created pet in that range?

With the account that is probably alluding too, that was the account with probably the most appealing names to clear that day, so a lot of people were probably trying at the same time...Since the account didn't clear, unless someone else was going for a name on another account/noticed a free name they liked, it makes sense there was a big gap with the numbers. You can refresh a lot in a minute, and if you amplify that with multiple people, it adds up pretty quickly.
