Let me tell you about my week! I must draw these idiots to me somehow because holy crud. Keep in mind that during all this, I've been ill with a sinus infection to varying degrees. I'm on the mend but I'm still congested and coughing.

Background: I've been trying to get onto medical assistance because of how low my income is since mid-September. I aged off my parents' insurance back in August and let me tell you, when people say that it's set up to be so complicated that people won't actually do this, they ain't kiddin'.

The owner of where I used to work at was completely unhelpful and railroaded me at every chance she got, down to making herself the martyr for my asking her to make copies of paperwork I needed. Paperwork she initially said was not available to staff. I wasn't asking for my coworkers' papers, just mine.

Secondly, by the time she got it to me, the paperwork was already out of date, but I submitted it anyways and then I got a letter from the state government stating they needed paperwork up to my last pay. The last date on the paperwork I had was August 22nd, this was back at the beginning of October when I was really able to finally apply. (I had also temporarily misplaced them because the binder I have all this in is too small, the papers were just hidden in a fold of an envelope.)

So, armed with this letter, I started this whole process on Monday because I needed the updated papers desperately and I was told that that the payroll book itself (because the owner refuses to do this electronically which would have solved this entire thing) was at the accountant and that she'd get me the paperwork next week (mind you: the letter I got from the government place had a due date of the 18th, she's telling me "next week" on the 11th-12th.)

This is where it starts getting hairy.

I said okay but if she could get it to me sooner, that'd be great. Fast forward a couple hours and she called me back, told me the books were done early at the accountant and she'd copy the papers that night for me in a special trip down to where I work. Fast forward to the next morning, I went into work to get said papers... and they're not there. Naturally, I was irked. Like I'm calling the owner right up from work and it's like, "You told me you'd have these down here. I need them, my livelihood and health depend on this."

The owner promptly told me that she never said that and she didn't like my tone.

And hung up on me.

Then refused to take my calls for the next three hours wherein she finally called me back about 3:30 that afternoon and left a voicemail. When I finally listened to that, she informed me we needed to have a "talk." I knew what was coming and I prepared myself to go down fighting, gathered up the papers I needed to prove myself and I went in yesterday.

I also had called my manager, who I got along swimmingly with and I covered a lot for her when her mother-in-law was ill and dying, and requested she be there as a neutral party since then she could hear what was going on right from the owner. (Who exaggerates, blows things out of proportion and plays the victim a lot.) I came to find out after the matter that I wasn't the first one to call the manager yesterday morning - the first person to call her was the owner. She wanted the manager there because she was afraid of what I'd do.

I was also later informed, during this "discussion" with the owner, that my voicemail that I had left was taken to the higher ups and deemed threatening. The worst I had gotten with her was assertive. Being threatening wouldn't have gotten me anywhere any faster with her.

So I'm standing outside, in the cold, with my nose running, coughing up my lungs still and the owner's prattling on about how disrespectful and threatening I've been to her. I finally asked if I would be allowed to get a word in edgewise and explained my situation to her, which completely shut her down to me. She then thus informed me that she wanted my keys to the place; I told her fine but I wasn't giving them to her, I'd give them to my manager and I made a point of going back in, getting them and my bags, and handing the keys to the manager.

I walked, calmly, past the owner and informed her that I wasn't using her as a reference and she told me good, she wouldn't give me a good one. I just smiled in a fashion of "What makes you think I'd want you to anyways?" And left after I apologized again to my manager for her winding up in a spot I was trying to prevent her from winding up in.

So I'm unemployed now, which actually makes applying for the health coverage infinitely easier, ironically.

Damn. I'm so sorry you have to deal with such idiots. I will never understand why people can't all just be helpful and at the very least, polite to each other. Especially in a situation like this when you're asking for help that might save your life. Ugh, that just makes me want to scream. I'm actually on state health care at the moment myself and I've heard so many horror stories like yours. I was really lucky in that my dealings with getting it were simple and quick. I really hope things get better for you soon and that you feel better quickly!

The whole thing that amuses me most about this is how the owner was apparently intimidated by someone ill with a sinus infection.

Why do people insist on making things so difficult when applying for medical assistance is already a difficult situation?

Maybe she was terrified you'd give your sinus infection to her?

Damn though, that's really awful. :( I hope you can find other work and feel better soon!

I will love you forever if you trade me:

All the more reason I should have sick days, y'know?

I'm hoping so too, I hope she doesn't go around and wreck any chance in future employment.

This... so-called "owner" isn't an idiot, she's downright manipulative oh my god. I am so sorry you had to deal with someone like this. You'd think by then they'd grow the hell up or would be a better person from the guilt of backstabbing people. Yet in the end you have some terrible people out there who just don't have the capacity to think of others and only themselves. I'm surprised she even has this position... if anything it'd make a lot of sense to me if she was fired after this occurrence. If not, I hope that it's because they're low on people for the job.

Some people are just self-entitled pricks who think they're the only ones who should be allowed things like medical care and a decent paycheck, etc. Some people are just straight up assholes. Some people like to make others miserable because their own situations are crappy and by making others feel like shit, their own situation doesn't seem as bad in comparison. And did I mention that some people are just assholes? Yeah, I did. Because they are.

Thinking back actually, I did have a previous boss who was a manipulative bitch. At a library of all places. She was very clannish with the other girls that worked there and I wasn't part of their group so I wasn't 'in' I guess. I know for a fact, but could never prove it, that she bad-mouthed me to other jobs I applied for. Stupid bitch.

I know, right?

Part of me really wishes she would pursue this further and it would go up as high as it could. Because then I could ask to face my accuser directly and bury her and the cooperation with what I have.

And another part of me wants to just stay silent and let this come to pass in its own way, karma and all that.

My last job before this was like that; I left that one too but on my own terms because I was like... so sick of the politics two of the people were trying to pull with me. Not to mention the one coworker was emotionally abusive/manipulative and she was teetering on physically abusive.

Re: she knocked a full display over one night and my biggest mistake was that I went over to help because I didn't hear anything for a minute. What would any sane person have done?

Yeah, seriously. I don't know what's been going on with people for sometime now like jeez... my faith in humanity is dwindling as always versus the fairly rare faith in humanity being restored lol.; For every good thing in this world there's like 10 bad humans. I'm not a great person myself, but man... some people are shocking with how extreme in how selfish they can be etc.

I think you really could if you went for it and idk; this reminds me of a little discussion years ago that a high school teacher had with my class. While it's definitely true that karma really does come back and bite people like this' asses, we were talking about how bad things happen to "good" people more, while "bad" people actually get by scot-free. Pretty much the whole class and our teacher were agreeing on this and it makes me somewhat sad that so many people would feel this way.

I don't claim to be a great person either and this whole post is stemmed off my side of the story, I'm just at a point now where I'm dubious of everyone and everything outside my comfort zone.

I've seen it too many times where karma (or whatever you want to call it) comes back to bite someone. Like now, if the former employers pursue it, they risk everything coming out and it would ruin them, not me. I have too much paperwork, too many people who have known me for the better part of my life and too many phonecalls on my side.

I'm sorry you had to deal with such a difficult person. Jesus christ, why the hell do some people just have to make life so difficult? Like, get off your high horse.

I've been fortunate to have worked for good people (and currently do), but I can only imagine how tough it would be having to put up with someone like that. Thank god you had a good relationship with your manager at least...

Because they thrive on drama, Idek.

I think the manager is basically covering her butt, tbph, because I've been told two different things regarding the voicemail I left and someone's lying.

Nah I'm sure you wouldn't be someone who would go around parading that you're a great person. It just felt strange to me that I was saying someone else isn't when I'm not myself hahah. The thing is, those kinds of people are on a whole entire level of bad that in the end. //shrugs

Omg. I think I know that feel... in fact, I think I'm past dubious with everyone and just I dunno lol. Ugh things out of comfort zones can suck really bad I know what you mean.

Yeahh, you're right about that part. I really dislike it when you're too busy; somehow there's times where you're busy with all these responsibilities, the next, people all want to see you at the same time.
