I plan on going to my first-ever fan convention in November - FANdom Con in Fort Walton, Florida. I want to start selling as an artist at some cons but figured I should go as a regular attendee to one first! Because I'm broke af I can't go all-out on a cosplay but that's one reason I have wanted to go to a con for years. So if I do anything it will probably be a modern-AU of a Mirkwood elf, or Kiki the witch. Thoughts? I know I keep reading "Cosplay anything you want! Go for it!" but what is your honest opinion on people who do older/AU versions of characters, or fan characters?

And talk about your convention experiences! Especially if you've been to FANdom Con or any other conventions in the southeast. What's your favorite? Bad experiences with any of them?

[oh and please ping me! my memory is awful i'll forget to check back]

Well, I suppose I'll be doing what could be considered an AU version of Michonne...a universe where she's white (because I am and I'm not dying my skin lol). I don't have a problem with it. shrug It's all about being creative and expressing your love for characters/shows through that creativity.

I'm a Motor City Comic Con attendee and I've seen all kinds of things there. Last year my favorite was someone dressed as Birdman. He went all out, holy crap, with giant wings that had real feathers and everything. It was really something. My least favorite, and I don't mean this in a demeaning way truly, is when people who are...very large, dress as characters in skimpy costumes. That's just...no one wants to see that. I'm all for people being comfortable in their own skin and being proud of what they look like and all, but seriously, there's a classy way to do it and a decidedly not classy way.
