"Good afternoon. My name is Professor Binns. In History of Magic, I will be dealing with solid, believable facts over myths and legends. Here you will be reading and writing a tremendous amount. I will not entertain the spouting out of opinions willy-nilly and blathering of nonsense in my class; Hogwarts students must know the facts to begin with before they can begin to form their own conclusions. I am here to teach and you are here to learn."
"Today's class is about the most important magical tools of any witch or wizard. Wandlore is a tremendously complicated branch of magic that dates back centuries, and there are still aspects of it that some of the most knowledgeable in wandlore still don't understand. Our latest Headmistress, Professor Fastidious, has asked me to instruct you on the most basic history of the very implements you are holding in your hands."
"Magic wands are differentiated by four main criteria: their lengths, flexibility versus rigidness, wand woods, and magical cores. No two wands are the same, even if they share the same four main critieria, as no two trees and magical creatures are exactly the same. The wand chooses the wizard, and the wizard bonds with the wand."
"The best known wandmakers in recent history were Garrick Ollivander and Mykew Gregorovitch. Coincidentially, both were at their prime at the same time. Ollivanders Wand Shop, which has been run by the Ollivander family since 382 B.C., is located in Diagon Alley in London. Wands by Gregorovitch is also located in London, to compete with Ollivanders, however the main branch of his operations was Gregorovitch Zauberstäbe which is located in central Europe. Both Ollivanders Wand Shop and Wands by Gregorovitch are still fully operational today, although their most celebrated proprietors have long since retired and passed away."
Your assignment today includes two essay questions. Please keep each answer between 2-3 paragraphs. Please post your answers here behind spoiler tags (if you do not know how to use spoiler tags, please let me know and I'd be happy to help you).
Each question will be graded out of a maximum of 10 points each for a total of a possible 20 House Points.
1.) Give a brief biography of Garrick Ollivander. Then summarize his most important accomplishment. Defend your reasoning for singling it out.
2.) Give a brief biography of Mykew Gregorovitch. Then summarize his most important accomplishment. Defend your reasoning for singling it out.
(Be creative with your answers! I know there is not a lot of concrete information about Gregorovitch, but use what is available and fill in the gaps as you'd like.)
Rox - Gryffindor - History of Magic Lesson 1
Garrick Olivander
Garrick Olivander was born to Gervaise Ollivander, a wizard and a muggle born witch on 25 september in or maybe before the year 1919. In his youth he attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardy and he got sorted into Ravenclaw.
Garrick came from a long line of wand makers and ended up in the family business, a shop located in Diagon Alley called Ollivanders Wand Shop. He had a great talent for wand making and developed the ambition to create the ideal wand by improving the cores and wand woods used. He believed that the best wands could be produced by using a core of an immensely powerful magical substance, enclosed in a specially selected and complementary wood, the result to be matched to an owner with whom the wand itself felt the most affinity. From the moment that it has found it´s ideal owner, the wand will begin to learn from and teach to its owner. Garrick Ollivander was an intelligent man, with an excellent memory for his work. He remembered every detail of every wand that he ever sold.
The most important accomplishment from Ollivander must have been the way he changed the wand making in the wizarding world, which I described earlier. He ended up creating more powerful wands that fitted perfectly with the character from the wand owner. I consider this to be his greatest accomplishment just because of the fact that he was able to create wands that were as powerful as its owner.
Mykew Gregorovitch
Mykew Gregorovitch was another famous wand maker and owner of Gregorovitch Zauberstäbe in Europe. His wands were also sold at Wands by Gregorovitch and Carkitt Market. There are no records of his birth, so there’s no way to say anything about his parents, other than that we know that he was a human. During the course of his career he became an expert in wandlore and he supplied many witches and wizards with reliable wands.
At some point in his life Gregorovitch became the owner of the Elder Wand, one of the deathly hallows and the most powerful wand that ever existed. He began to try and duplicate it´s powers to try and create more of these powerful wands. Gregorovitch then told everyone he had found the powerful wand and a way to replicate it. The result of that being that the Elder Wand got stolen from him, before he ever found a way to reproduce its powers. Gregorovitch was killed by Lord Voldemort, when the last tried to track down the Elder Wand and Gregorovitch couldn´t tell him where it was.
Gregorovitch most important accomplishment could be his possession and mastering of the Elder Wand or the fact that he´s the only Elder Wand master that did not get killed or disarmed by a new master of the wand, but that´s not really that great if you think about it, cause it doesn’t really say anything about him as a person. So it must be his wand making skills then and the fact that he created wands for popular wizards, such as the wand for Viktor Krum, Seeker for the Bulgarian National Quidditch team. That last tells us that Gregorovitch was in fact a very good wand maker, able to compete against Ollivander

Garrick Olivander
Considered by many to be the world's best wandmaker, almost everyone at Hogwarts gets their wands from Garrick Ollivander.
Born 25 September, in or prior to 1919 Parents Wizard father, Muggle-born mother Wand Hornbeam and dragon heartstring, twelve and three-quarter inches, slightly bendy Skills An incomparable understanding of wandcraft Hobbies None; his profession is his obsession
Ollivander grew up in the family business, and showed precocious talent in wandmaking. Soon, he developed an ambition to improve upon the cores and wand woods he made and developed a determination to pursue the ideal wand. Before Garrick Ollivander's proprietorship of Ollivanders Wand Shop, wizards used a wide variety of wand cores; the customer would often present their wandmaker with a magical substance to which they were attached, and he would turn it into their wand core. Mr Ollivander, however, maintained that doing so altered the wand's temperament, and revolutionised the way wands were crafted by having cores of immensely powerful magical substances expertly enclosed in specially selected and complementary wandwoods, the result to be matched to an owner with whom the wand itself felt the most affinity.
While there was initially substantial resistance to this new way wands were made, it soon became clear that wands made by Ollivander were far superior to any others. His methods of locating wand woods and core substances, marrying them together, and matching them to ideal owners were all jealously guarded secrets that were coveted by rival wandmakers. This was his most important accomplishment.
Mykew Gregorovitch
Mykew[Gregorovitch was a famous wandmaker and proprietor of Gregorovitch Zauberstäbe in Europe. His wands were also sold at Wands by Gregorovitch at Carkitt Market in London, in competition with Ollivanders.
Born 1868 Died 2 September, 1997) Height 1.91 metres Weight 102 kilos Wand 15" elder, thestral hair core
At some point many years ago, Gregorovitch came into the possession of the Elder Wand, one of the Deathly Hallows and the most powerful wand in existence, and upon realising its true nature, began experimenting to try and duplicate its powers. Gregorovitch, somewhat foolish by nature and hoping it would improve business, started a rumour about him possessing a wand and his efforts to replicate its properties. The result occurred one night when Gregorovitch heard someone break into his workshop. He promptly ran inside and saw a blonde-haired young man had taken the wand, who then promptly shot a Stunning Spell at Gregorovitch, before leaping out the window. Gregorovitch never found out who stole the wand.
OK. To realize and recognize the true nature of the elder wand was an true accomplishment, but to lose it was sheer studidity.

Lapis - Ravenclaw
Garrick Ollivander was born around 1919 to a wizard father and a muggle-born witch mother.
He attended Hogwarts as a youth and was sorted into Ravenclaw.
Ollivander's greatest accomplishment is most certainly his pioneering of wand construction, specifically the pairing
of powerful core materials (dragon heartstring, phoenix feather, unicorn hair) with complementary wand woods. In doing so, Ollivander
revolutionized wandmaking by crafting wands that would choose the user. In the past, magic users brought their own core to the wandmaker to
craft into a wand. This led to unpredictable behavior from the wands, whereas the wands crafted by Ollivander and matched to a witch or wizard
based on the wand's preference, where much more stable and less temperamental wand.
Mykew Gregorovitch, was born in Eastern Europe in the early 1920's. Like Ollivander, Gregorovitch was born into a wandcrafting family, and while Ollivander took little stock in Gregorovitch as a contemporary, they did agree on some aspets of wandlore. Gregorovitch's contributions to wandlore are, in fact, his greatest accomplishment. Contributions regarding types of wand wood, such as the following, "Hawthorn makes a strange, contradictory wand, as full of paradoxes as the tree that gave it birth, whose leaves and blossoms heal, and yet whose cut branches smell of death" are integral for wandmakers today. Knowing the detailed, intimate properties of the different wand woods allows our current wandmakers to knowledgeably create stable, succesful pairings to Ollivander's standard three core materials.

Elune - Ravenclaw
Garrick Ollivander was born into a family of wand makers on or before 1919. As a youth, he attended Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry and was sorted into Ravenclaw house. After graduation, he followed in his family's footsteps and became a notable wand maker. He discovered that matching wand woods with powerful, complementary core material would create individual, ideal wands.
I believe Ollivander's greatest accomplishment lied in his research on wand woods and wand cores. Instead of using random core material and woods, Ollivander found that certain cores worked better with certain woods. Wands could then be catered toward individuals based on personal temperaments, skill level, etcetera. This takes a great amount of intuition on the wand maker’s part. Currently, these innovations are being continued by wand makers who trained Ollivander. Because of this, the wizarding world now has better-suited wands that are more personalized, more powerful, and less temperamental.
I also believe that Gregorovitch’s greatest achievement was his investigations in his field, particularly regarding wand woods. He discovered different intricacies about different woods. He noted that Hawthorne, for example, is rather complex wood that can consists of both “healing†and “deadly†fibers. In this sense, he recognized that wand woods need to be individually catered toward his clients’ needs. This instigated some of Ollivander’s discoveries on core material. Therefore, Gregorovitch's research ultimately led to more complex, improved ideas on wand-wizard pairings. (You did an awesome job coming up with this assignment, Poppy!)
🌸Seeking:Garrick Olivander
Garrick was a Ravenclaw, he grew up and went to hogwarts and was a half-blood. He came from a long line of wandmakers and continued the business his family built. He married a muggle woman and was captured and tortured by Voldemort, harry and his friends then rescued him.
Mykew Gregorovitch
Mykew was a Human and a wandmaker, through time he became a wandlore. His business was in competition with Olivander's and unfortunately led to his demise. He acquired the Elder Wand and voldemort killed him for it.
Garrick Ollivander
Garrick Ollivander was born 25 September in 1919 or before. The exact year is unknown. It is known that he sold a wand, containing one of the two feathers ever given by Fawkes (Albus Dumbeldore's phoenix) to Tom Riddle (Voldemort) when he was 11.
Ollivander revolutionized wand making. Up until this change, a customer usually brought the wand-maker a magical substance and the wand-maker would in turn make it into the wand core. Ollivander changed that. He makes the wand ahead of time, by enclosing a magical core substances such as unicorn hair, dragon heart-string or phoenix feather within specially selected wand-wood, among them: cherry, ash, willow, oak, and the customer tries out which wand suits him in the store.
I think this is Garrick Ollivander's most important accomplishment
Mykew Gregorovitch
Mykew Gregorovitch was a wandmaker. Gregorovitch made the wand that Viktor Krum used, and retired shortly after he sold it to him. He was killed by Voldemort for not having the Elder wand, something apparently he possessed and was stolen, though it is unclear if he actually still had it or just started the rumour that he had it. This rumour was started to increase sales of his wands and ultimately brought him his own death. It is said he attempted to recreate the Elder Wand but did not succeed. I don't find his accomplishments remarkable; he was killed by the Killing Curse.
Garrick Ollivander was born on September 25th in 1919, or a bit before. He was accepted into Hogwarts, where he was placed in Ravenclaw. He came from a family of wandmakers, and he proved to have great talent in this area. Before Garrick took over the family business, it was common for customers to bring a magical substance they were attached to for the wandmaker to then turn into their wand core. Garrick thought there was a better way and came up with the idea to use powerful magical substances and enclose them in specific wandwoods, which then were to be matched with customers who felt a connection.
I believe that his biggest accomplishment was the using of powerful magical substances and selected wandwoods. This revolutionized wandmaking, and he became famous for producing superior wands

Mykew Gregorovitch was the rival wandmaker to Ollivander, and he became an expert in wandlore during his time as a wandmaker. At some point he came into possession of the Elder wand, said to be the most powerful wand in existence. He tried experimenting with the wand, trying to replicate it's powers. To try to improve business, he started a rumour that he owned a very powerful wand and was working to replicate it. But this would lead to his downfall, as his shop was broken into and the elder wand stolen. Voldemort heard this rumour, and found Gregorovitch demanding he hand over the wand. Finding that it was stolen, Voldemort used legilimency to find out who the thief was, and then killed Gregorovitch.
I suppose his biggest accomplishment was finding the elder wand, though how he did I don't know. Because he found it, it ended up in Dumbledore's possession, then Voldemort's and eventually led to Voldemort's demise. Though it's not physically his doing, gregorovitch's actions played an important role in the defeat of a powerful dark wizard.
Ollivander and Gregorovitch
1.
Garrick Ollivander was born on September 25th, 1919 (or before), in England. He was sorted into the Ravenclaw house when he attended Hogwarts, and he was a very good student.
He came from a long line of wand-makers (dating all the way back to 382 BC), and joined the family business after graduation. He showed immense proficiency in the profession of wand-making, and quickly began to revolutionize the wand-making process.
His greatest achievement is clearly the way he changed the cores of wands everywhere. Whereas prior to his involvement, wands had cores of something the witch or wizard held dear, he quickly proved that cores made of powerful, magical substances were far superior. His knack for choosing the perfect wood and core pairings quickly made him famous, despite initial protests to this new technique, and made him the envy of rival wandmakers everywhere. This is his greatest achievement by far because it completely revolutionized wands as we knew it and made them far greater, more stable and more powerful than ever before.
Mykew Gregorovitch (birthdate unknown) was a wandmaker in the 20th century. Becoming expert in lore as he gained experience throughout his career, Gregorovitch made and distributed many reliable wands to witches and wizards all over Europe. He could never quite compete with Ollivander, but he made a decent living.
He arguably never had any astonishing or particularly amazing achievements in his life, though he was nearly on par with Ollivander in terms of skill. They both agreed that hawthorn made excellent wands, since the wood was both complex and intriguing in its nature. Many in Eastern Europe hold Gregorovitch in the highest regard, which is an achievement unto itself, really. All in all, he did well in life and many will mourn the fact that he has passed and no more of his creations will be made.

Question 1 – Garrick Ollivander
The great wandmaker Garrick Ollivander – not the first wandmaker in the family but arguably the most talented – was born in England on the 25th of September to a wizard father and muggleborn witch mother. The exact year of his birth is unknown, though it has been theorized that it was in 1919.
As a young wizard, Garrick Ollivander attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardy, where in his first year he was sorted into Ravenclaw house. His time at Hogwarts was largely uneventful, though he did very well in his studies and was praised highly by his professors.
Upon graduating from Hogwarts, Garrick Ollivander took up the family business, continuing the legacy of a family of wandmakers that dates as far back as 382 B.C. Working in the family shop, Garrick very quickly picked up on the tricks of the trade and became extremely proficient at the art of wandmaking. Before long, he had made a name for himself a master craftsman. It was around this time that he came onto an idea that would revolutionize wandmaking forever. Where wands had once been made with cores forged from a witch or wizard’s most prized possession, Garrick Ollivander began experimenting with something different and much stronger. It quickly became clear that his idea to replace old-fashioned cores with new, powerful, magical cores made from materials such as unicorn hair and dragon heartstring was a brilliant one. The result of his experimentation with cores, in addition to his choices of wood with which to pair these cores, was a new generation of better, more reliable, more responsive wands that revolutionized magic for all time to come.
Garrick Ollivander’s work, while slow to catch on with the general public, made fellow wandmakers envious. He was the talk of the whole wizarding world and was unpopular among rival wand shops and craftsmen. Even so, his ideas persisted.
In 1996, Garrick Ollivander was taken captive by Voldemort, and was tortured, presumably for information. He was rescued in 1998 by Harry Potter and friends.
Question 2 – Mykew Gregorovitch
Mykew Gregorovitch was a 20th century wandmaker of Russian descent, though the exact date and place of his birth are unknown. He died in September of 1997.
As the proprietor of Gregorovitch Zauberstabe in Eastern Europe and Wands by Gregorovitch in England, Mykew was constantly in competition with Garrick Ollivander. While he was good at his craft and provided countless witches and wizards with faithful and effective wands, he could not hold a candle to Ollivander’s work and was embittered by this. Similarly, he and Ollivander disagreed on most everything aside from the fact that hawthorn wands were “complex and intriguing in their nature.â€
At some point in his life, Mykew Gregorovitch came to possess the Elder Wand. Realizing that this wand had limitless power, he began to experiment with it in an attempt to recreate its powers in hopes that he might become a household name like Garrick Ollivander. Rumors of the work he was doing in attempts to replicate the Elder Wand’s power began to spread, and ultimately this led to his workshop being broken into and the Elder Wand being stolen by an unidentified blond-haired wizard.
After the loss of the Elder Wand, Mykew Gregorovitch continued his work for many years, never quite coming on par with the likes of Ollivander, until such a time as he retired from the business. His retirement was short-lived, however, when his name was turned over to Voldemort by Ollivander in connection with the Elder Wand rumors. Voldemort sought Mykew Gregorovitch out and, upon finding him months later, demanded any pertinent information. When attempts to torture the information out of Gregorovitch failed, Voldemort performed Legilimency on the wandmaker and was able to witness the truth of the wand being stolen. At that point, angry about the fruitless pursuit and detainment of Gregorovitch, Voldemort placed the killing curse on him, ending Gregorovitch’s life.

wandmakers
Being descendant of the ancient Roman wizard Ollivander, Garrick was always destined to be a great wand maker. With a great mind and a need to learn more it was no surprise that he was sorted in Ravenclaw when he went to Hogwarts. After Hogwarts he made the most incredible finding in magical history. Before Garrick wizards used different magical substances for the core of their wand, this made the wand have an altered temperament. Garrick found that using cores that were complementary to the wandwood the wand was much more superior.
It is unknown when Mykew Gregorovitch was born, however we do suspect that he was a descendant of the original brothers of the Deathly Hallows. He was a great wandmaker in London and held master over the elder wand for a time. Although Ollivander might disagree Gregotovitch was an expert in wandlore. He studied the different properties of want wood and how it might make a better wand.

Garrick Ollivander
Garrick Ollivander was born on September 25th in or prior to 1919 into a Half-blood family. He attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and was sorted into Ravenclaw House. Ollivander chose to continue his father’s family business: wand-making. He was determined to improve the cores and woods of wands and wanted to create the ideal wand. He changed the way wand cores were selected and used. Prior to his proprietorship in his family’s business, wizards would bring their wand maker a magical substance that they were attached to which would then be turned into their wand core. Mr. Ollivander believed that this technique altered the wand’s temperament and thus created a new way for their cores to be created. He enclosed in his specially selected wandwoods, cores of highly powerful magical substance, where the wand would now choose its owner with whom it felt the most affinity with.
His wands were superior to wands from other wand makers as his new methods helped him create the ideal wand. His wands were more stable and powerful. He found the perfect bond between wand and wandowner by matching his wand woods and core substances together and then matching them to their ideal owners. I believe Ollivander’s greatest accomplishment was creating the method in finding the ideal wand for any and every witch or wizard. He researched, experimented and found which core would better suit wandwoods. By changing the substance that was formed into the core, he revolutionized wandmaking. His wands were more personalized as they themselves had a choice in choosing their owner.
Mykew Gregorovitch
Mykew Gregorovitch was a famous wandmaker in the 20th century and considered by many European wizards to be the best. His birthdate is unknown. He was an expert in wandlore. He provided many witches and wizards in Central Europe with his wands. During the early 20th century, Gregorovitch obtained the Elder Wand, known to be the most powerful wand to ever exist. He tried experimenting with the Elder Wand in order to learn how to duplicate his powers. However, his efforts came to an end when Gellert Grindelwald stole the Elder Wand. He was murdered by Voldemort on September 2, 1997.
I believe his greatest accomplishments were his developments in wandlore. He was considered to be one of the best wand makers in Europe. Many witches and wizards sought out his wands. Gregorovitch and Ollivander had contrasting views on wandmaking. His techniques, although different than Ollivander’s, still created very reliable wands and in so he was seen as a viable competitor to Ollivander.
