I loved the cosplay contest for EpiCon, and I think it would be a lot of fun to integrate that same idea into a costume contest for Morostide. I love the holiday, but I think it would be even better with a costume contest. ;)

We did this once already (And I placed in the contest too!)

I'm not opposed to the idea, but the only problem is nearly EVERYONE will enter. And with the randomization, some people get seen more than others, and it turns into a popularity contest blah blah.

I don't really have any suggestions on HOW to make this work, unless staff narrows it down to like, 100 entrants, and then we can rate them on a scale of 1-10 or something. Last time it was 2 avatars that would show, and we had to vote for the one we liked best. Which sucked because sometimes both weren't very good, and you really didn't want to vote for either one.

I'd still love to do it though. It is kind of fun.

I don't really like costume contests, personally. I just said this on another recent thread, but basically unless you dress up as a very well known/popular character, you won't win. And there will probably be a dozen other people dressed up as the same character anyway.

Unless we put them all on one page like the Alegarten contest! /s

It would probably work out fine if they weighted it instead of using pure randomization. Record the number of views/votes an entry has, and favor the lesser seen entries so they all have a roughly equal chance of receiving votes.

I'd rather have no official sitewide HA contest than one like So, the Business Executive Human Avatar Contest. None of them have been that great tbh.

Don't get me wrong because I love dressing up and community building, but the contest part is very tricky on Subeta.

Pretty much this. I love when there are site-wide things to do, but Epicon and the couple smaller HA contests we've had have kind of proven it's impossible to do it right.

Yeah, can't disagree with you there. That's probably true. I loved the Van Gogh and Sharknado cosplays that did so well in the last EpiCon contest though. :) I totally get the competitive spirit. I guess for me I just have a ton of fun participating. For some reason I've always been a sucker for a good costume contest. Creating the outfit is my favorite part, whether others vote for it or not. :P

^^This sounds like a pretty good plan to me. :)

No. Pretty much all previous costume contests have been terrible.

I feel that, somewhat. I always dress up for Morostide regardless (I mean, my HAs are pretty often fantasy-themed I guess you'd call it, anyway though) but if there's a contest, it's disheartening to realize that even though you entered, you won't get anything because like 6 people have played OFF and it's hard to create an outfit based off of a tiny, black-and-white, very pixely character (because no matter how close you are, people are like wtf is that picture with it supposed to be)

...tangent aside, I love the idea of a costume contest, in theory but I don't like how they tend to play out in practice

Actually I love the costume contests. I never expect to win, I just enjoy the dressing up aspect. I'd love to see a morostide contest.

I dunno cause like Darkrai was saying there's really no way to do well unless you dress up like a character that everyone knows. Plus it wouldn't really be fair to the new users who don't have anything yet. (I've been on here forever so I have a lot of things but we don't want to scare new users off!) I think it would be fun to do like some sort of costume parade maybe....no idea how that would work, but I dunno about the contest.

I love our costume contests, imperfect though they are. I don't really see the popularity contest everyone else sees. I don't recognize any of the names in the 2010 morostide contest top ten except my own, and I don't think I was a very well known user. The better entries are toward the front, and the no effort entries in the back. There were just SO MANY entries. Many of them weren't even costumes so that is lame, but on us. I'm not sure how to implement a filter on entries without making a ton more work for staff, but that would be awesome.

Costume contest seems fun.. But unless there was a way to make sure it didn't become a popularity contest (which we all know would happen.) I would rather not see this happen.. :(
