This lesson contains an ESSAY QUESTION assignment. ** This lesson was written by of Gryffindor - she has been awarded 75 House Points!
Witches and wizards that are born with the gift of prophecy are known as Seers, who can foresee the future by using their Inner Eye. Non-Seers can learn divination methods, but they might not be as successful. So if you don’t do well in this class to start, don’t worry about it, it just means that you’re not a Seer.
Divination has been practiced since the ancient times. The earliest known method of it has been recorded somewhere in the West.
For this lesson we’ll be looking into the magnificent wonders of Tessomancy.
I assume that everyone has read the facts about Tessomancy in the study books, as I did place an announcement about reading it on the boards, but for those of you that haven’t read it, I will give a quick summary.
Tessomancy is a part of Divination, it’s the art of reading tea leaves to predict events in the future. There are a couple of well-known images witches and wizards described seeing in their teacups. For example, the Club, who has been linked to the events of an attack in the future. And the even worse Grim, who foresees death in the future. Better hope no one will see that one today!

Professor Trelawney picks up her own teacup and looks into the tea leaves at the bottom. “Looks like a very nice sun,†she mumbles after looking at it. “Apparantly I will be very happy in the nearby future. Maybe I will have a wonderful student in this class that will make me happy!â€
Your assignment today includes two small essay questions. Please keep your answers between 1-3 paragraphs. Please post your answers here behind spoiler tags (if you do not know how to use spoiler tags, please let me know and I'd be happy to help you).
Each question will be graded out of a maximum of 10 points each for a total of a possible 20 House Points.
1.) What image do you see in your teacup and what does this image mean? Please be as creative as you can be with this, what you will see is very personal. The more creative you get, the more points you will receive.
2.) “Everyone should be able to foresee the future.†What's your opinion on this? Please be as creative as you can be in your answer. The more creative you get or the more you explain your opinion, the more points you will get.

Um, I see... dragons? Yes, two dragons. Um... And a flock of birds? That one's definitely a book. So if I look at my copy of Unfogging the Future... here we are... A dragon means change, so there are changes coming. But there are two, so it must be big changes. Ummm... yes, birds--a flock of birds means good news. So perhaps the changes will be good. And it looks like the book stands for a learning experience... Are you sure that tessomancy is supposed to predict the future? Because this seems to be more like my recent past? When the ministry man came to tell my parents that I'm a witch and that I'd been accepted at Hogwarts... Sorry, I've got a headache--could you explain it to me again, please?
2.) “Everyone should be able to foresee the future.†What's your opinion on this? Please be as creative as you can be in your answer. The more creative you get or the more you explain your opinion, the more points you will get.

I guess that's true. I mean anyone can see shapes in tea leaves, or fire, or a crystal ball. Anyone can interpret them in anyway they should like. So in that sense, certainly, anyone would be able to foresee the future.
But are they accurate in their predictions? Not necessarily all the time. When I was in the muggle schools, I learned that the Roman and Greecian empires had soothsayers, but they weren't correct all the time. I mean to say, translation is a matter of perception, isn't it? And everything you see has a multitude of meanings, so who knows which direction the scale is going to tip? So you could be right, you could be wrong. And in that respect, perhaps it's not really possible for just anyone to be capable of seeing the future.

I gaze into the teacup trying so hard to see an image that will have a meaning. I gaze and gaze and all I see are tea leaves in the bottom of a cup. Nothing that means a thing. Suddenly the tealeaves begin to arrange themselves and I stare at them once again. An image of a dog is appearing. An image of my loyal and wonderful companion of 11 years, whose life ended just before last Christmas. With tears steaming down my eyes, I repeat to him the that what has given me strength since his passing.
"Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together...."

I do not think that anybody who is human should be able to foresee the future. That should be left to the gifted and unhuman. If you are human, I think, to foresee the future means that you will encounter things you do not wish to encounter. Humans are not capable or able to logically see the future.

1.) What image do you see in your teacup and what does this image mean? SPOILER (click to toggle)
When I look in my teacup, I see the image of a sun; its rays shining down upon a cross in the center of the cup. Perhaps there is a bird flying above the cross, over to the left of it, the kind of bird you draw when you're a child that look like a failed attempt at an M, or perhaps that's just some tea leaf remains that have nothing to do with anything. Either way, I interpret this as normal everyday trials that I am going to go through in my life, but at the end of them I will come out free and happy and more full of life.
2.) “Everyone should be able to foresee the future.†What's your opinion on this? SPOILER (click to toggle)
I don't believe everyone should be able to foresee the future, nor do I believe everyone can. You even say right afterward that not everyone is a Seer and may not be successful in your class because of it. I believe it's a gift that some people have; some wizards, and even some muggles, are just drawn to it from birth, perhaps due to genetics or some other unknown factor. Teaching someone a gift when they have no connection to it will only end in disaster, as gifts can not be taught successfully like skills can.

1.) What image do you see in your teacup and what does this image mean?
SPOILER (click to toggle)
The first time I look into my cup there are 2 things I see. The first one is a heart surrounded by a sun. I think it means that that I will have an unforgettable day with a loved one. The other image I see is darker. Much darker. It looks like a sword and blood is dripping onto the ground. There will be a war and blood will be shed.
2.) “Everyone should be able to foresee the future.†What's your opinion on this?
SPOILER (click to toggle)
I don´t think it´s a good idea to foresee the future. It would take the fun out of life and would make people scared. We would be anxious and scared all the time if we saw something we wouldn´t want to see. Or it would take out a surpise a loved one or a friend has planned. Foreseeing the future would be like interfering with life itself. I´d make our decisions and dreams meaningless because we already know the outcome.

1.) What image do you see in your teacup and what does this image mean?
SPOILER (click to toggle)
I see a tree with an acorn beneath it and a crow above it. Unfogging the Future says that acorns represent a "windfall, unexpected gold," however the other two symbols trouble me a bit. The crow is ominous, especially considering that they're dark symbols associated with death or changes. Crows also can eat acorns in real life if I'm not mistaken. The tree is large and sturdy but has a protruding limb that's wonky.
I interpret this all to mean that I will have a success that will make me happy about my finances, but that I must tread carefully to avoid crows and prune breaking branches from my life so to speak. The gold will only come if I can effectively avoid the symbolic crow and hazardous tree limb. How I can apply this is to understand that I can be naive about people who would do me harm, so I must be more vigilant against them. I should be guarded and protect myself in order to move ahead with my own goals and plans.
2.) “Everyone should be able to foresee the future.†What's your opinion on this?

People have the ability to be open-minded. They can push the limits of their own thinking and truly believe things that cannot be seen. Magical people must be in tune with themselves spiritually and be cognizant of the world around them, physically and otherwise. Telling the future is not as simple a fortune-telling in a Muggle movie. It's all about self-awareness within the universe.
The operative word in the above phrase however is "should" unfortunately; Muggles and wizards should be able to foretell the future but either cannot or will not. We all have the inherent ability whether it's slight or great, but there are those who close themselves off and lose touch with their Inner Eyes completely. Also, everything that I have mentioned as possible in my previous paragraph is easier said than done. True Seers are so rare not only because the future is both uncertain as a time and place but because even gifted witches and wizards can be skeptics. Poppy, Slytherin

1.
The main symbol was caked deep, below all other layers of my teacup. A large seashell rested along the base; its center was dark, but the edges diluted toward the lip of the mug. Inside the shell were empty spaces, where water clung between the tea leaves. The shapes here were mostly obscure, but a thin, slanted line was traced from one edge of the symbol to the other, as though someone grazed a fingernail through the leaves. The right auricle at the bottom of the shell was nearly nonexistent, making it appear unstable.
According to the study book, shells symbolize the sea or good news. But my specific shell resembled a scallop, an image of healing and pilgrimages. I believe I’ll undertake a psychological journey: I’ll become a stronger person who can withstand breezes that the sea may throw my way; I’ll learn to stand up to my parents for wishing I were in Slytherin. And I’ll find peace within myself for not being perfect. The thin line could be a river, which means I’ll have emotional trouble along the way. And the clipped wing on the shell might indicate that I’ll never be fully healed. But, ultimately, I believe the shell stands for good news: cleansing.
2.
I believe a very limited number of people, namely seers, can truly foresee the future. Ordinary individuals, like myself, must rely on our senses and perceptions to speculate what will happen next.
When reading palmistry or tea leaves, for example, a lot of intuition and observational analysis are involved in order to access “pathsâ€. But the predictions are merely speculation for most people. On my above reading, for example, the meanings were rather far-reaching. I could have gone with any number of “scallop†meanings—fertility, for example. But as I have no real desire to birth multiple children, I went with healing instead. I underwent a psychological analysis to apply specific characteristics to my personal problems in order to find meaning. I hypothesized, but I couldn't actually "see" the future.
Also, it's important to realize that each individual has different skill-sets, talents, and genes. I personally believe that one needs to be gifted in the divine to accurately foresee the future. This is an ability I can't claim to possess.

1.) What image do you see in your teacup and what does this image mean? Please be as creative as you can be with this, what you will see is very personal. The more creative you get, the more points you will receive.
A: When I finished drinking my tea I looke dupon thebottom to find this. While at first it looks like nothing but a blob, it soon seemed to take the shape of a pear with its stem and a leaf attached.
In the research I've done about Tasseography, to get a pear means "Comfort, financial ease." This brings me some ease of mind as recently my family has been hitting some hard times, not enough work you see. So hopefully this is a positive and proper review of prosperity for us in the future.
Question 2
2.) “Everyone should be able to foresee the future.†What's your opinion on this? Please be as creative as you can be in your answer. The more creative you get or the more you explain your opinion, the more points you will get.
A: I believe that this is an invalid statement. If everyone could see the future, even small glimpses, it would be more probable that we would all try to prevent bad things from happening and it would in turn disrupt the balance of the world. We would live in constant fear of horrible things. One could foresee something that hasn't happened; another might see something else that counters the others sight and still another might see something entirely different based on how one or more of the others act on what they see.
The Sight should only go to those who know how to balance it properly, who know that certain actions of prevention may cause such consequences that are beyond horrible if they tried to prevent what they saw. As it is, I don't feel there are enough responsible people in this world who could bear such a burden and still live a happy life.

As i finish my tea i get a bit nervous about what i might see, the future can be so frightening at times. I look down in hesitation, i see a dying flower. I have no idea what this means, i do not have a garden to which my crop will die, i have not been given flowers in such a long time for those to wither either. Maybe it means more than just a flower, maybe because its a dying rose, that it means love or possibly love lost. I should do some research, i am only making myself feel unease. I look in the book to flowers, then i read the sub paragraph about wilting flowers, this means a friendship will come to a sudden end but more will blossom in its wake...

I have mixed feelings about this question to be quite honest. I can see where seeing the future may help those who are sad or upset and can see that there will be more in life ahead of them! But by seeing the future some people may not get to see something happy, then they might try to change the future and that could result in even more heartache. It can be a good thing or bad, we may be able to see the future but we can not control what we see and that is where it hurt's the most. I just wish everyone could only see themselves five years from now, smiling, and just maybe that will make everyone see that we choose to be happy, even if something sad might happen in the future!

What is in your cup?
"I seeee maybe the moon? My uncle was a werewolf by blood so maybe I will see him sometime soon? Um there's also a mug, maybe that means my tiredness is soon going to fade. Oh man I hope so. I can't focus on anything because I've been so sleepy.
Do you believe anyone can forsee the future?
I believe if someone is taught by a seer then they have a much better chance of being good at this. Not everyone will be able to because not everyone wants to. I would ,ove to and I'm being taught by a seer so I believe I have some potential. Wait... You are a seer right??

Inside the cup
When Hannah looked into her tea cup. She saw a yang symbol, but with the inside curve looking like teeth with grooves going in and out repeatedly. I'm not sure what it means exactly. Something good and part of an animal will be together and come to me? Or a little bad and a very good thing will come to me? It's really hard to tell. Maybe like it doesn't want me to know or I don't know. Hannah laughed a little to herself quietly.
Opinion
I don't think everyone should be able to foresee the future. People might try to alter their destiny, which can lead to even worse things. Fate should be able to happen gradually on it's own. Fate should not be tampered with. I think only a small amount should be able to, that way only a few fate changing things might happen.

Fade peered into his teacup for a long time before finally settling on what he thought best described what he saw. After a while the blobs started to resemble a few images he had seen in a Tessomancy book he had borrowed from the Library. Taking his own experiences into consideration he chewed his lip and began to record his findings.
“I see an open book with a cloth bookmark above it. This could symbolize learning for some, but for me I think it more represents my journey and serves as a reminded that our futures are what we make them. Nothing's carved in stone, yet we can’t go back, we can only move forward. The bookmark represents important memories that I could never forget. The remaining pages yet to be read, symbolize that I still have lots to learn and hopefully, lots of time to learn it in.â€

“Everyone possesses a certain amount of intuition, yes. But only some people choose to listen to it. Some people would rather dismiss it and not have to think about it. Also I believe that there are some who are naturally more suited for Divination than others. Personal interest in this field goes a long way. If someone were to denounce the art they would be ultimately limiting their own abilities to perceive the supposed future. But with the ability to believe you can accomplish something often comes the drive to achieve that ultimate goal. The deeper you look into it, the more research you do, the closer you will be to determining the truth for yourself. Then again, this field can be very subjective and sometimes there will be those who do Divination a disservice by being entirely dishonest with their findings.
In short, yes I think that everyone possesses the innate abilities to predict the future. But it ultimately comes down to whether or not they choose to devote time and energy into developing their sight.â€

Question 1
Amanda studied her teacup intently. She was determined to see something, but she wasn't sure that she could. She glanced around at her classmates, and it seemed like they were mostly having success. Determined, she looked back at her cup for a long time before she finally decided what she was seeing.
"I see a tree with bushy leaves with a shooting star flying over it. The tree represents growth; I do not know if the growth pertains to me, but I believe it does because I have grown a lot as a witch since I have been here at Hogwarts. The shooting star symbolizes a wish. I will have to think on what wish that may be. I wonder if it means my wish will be granted?"
Question 2
"I personally do not believe that all people can see the future. Seeing the future is a gift that is only given to some people, and I do not believe that it is something that can be learned. It is a skill that can be honed and cultivated if it already exists, but it cannot be taught to someone who does not already possess the gift. Witches and wizards who can truly see the future come from ancient lines of Seers, and possess a special magical ability."

Answer One
The tea tastes lovely but I was worried as I finished it. I tried keeping my blank and to think of nothing, however I was worried about a letter I had received the day before from my aunt. After swirling the cup three times I turned the cup over on the saucer and took three deep breaths.
Turning the cup over the first thing I see is nothing. I turned my cup around and starting from the handle I saw what looked like a kettle and an iceberg in the future area of the cup. The present seemed to be a frog and the past is a feather. I grabbed my Unfogging the Future and saw what each meant starting from the past through to the future.
A feather – need for concentration A frog - fertility A kettle - a special visitor is coming An iceberg – danger!!
I shivered at the last one. From my reading I deduced that in the past should have concentrated better (which did not bode well for the exam I was having the next day). I believed the rest had to do with the letter I received which shocked me. My aunt had wrote to me telling me that she was pregnant (fertility) and that she was worried about the father coming to hurt her. You see, she was in a bad situation with a guy who turned out to be a practitioner of the Dark Arts.
I think I better go write back to my aunt now!
Answer Two
I believe with enough studying and patience anyone can get ideas of the future. I do not believe everyone can “see†the future but if you study the stars and signs around you that you might be able to get the gist of it.

Veta peered into the cup. Rim to bottom in a spiral, if she remembered correctly. Hmmm...
There were some wavy lines with a camel near the top of the cup, which meant troublesome things that she would just have to put up with. Her parents, probably. They meant well enough, but they really didn't understand her at all.
There was a path of dots leading away from the camel further down into the cup, and ending in some kind of building. Too broad and pointy to be a normal horse. It could be a church, or an abbey. More than one spire, so probably an abbey! So she'd eventually journey away from her frustrations (the camel), and find freedom and piece of mind. She could probably call the specks around the path triangles if she squinted; those were always good luck!
Near the bottom of the cup was... a horse? No, there were some spaces. Could they be a zebra's stripes? Both meant journeys, but a horse reflected on fulfilling some specific desire, and zebras meant adventures in foreign lands. Both certainly sounded exciting, even if the position meant they were far away.
So! Overall, she had troubles in the now that she'd have to bear, a journey away from those troubles to some freedom in the moderate future - maybe a few years - and in the distant future, some kind of travel. Seemed like she'd be doing a lot of moving around then! It was a fairly positive fortune, and general and vague enough to most likely be true. All people had frustrations, many of which they could do nothing about and could simply bear. Most people would try to free themselves from said frustrations, and thus find a bit of peace for themselves. And a journey? Many people travelled. Even if divination was often nonsense, it was still comforting to have confirmation of her own goals for herself.

"Everyone should be able to foresee the future to a certain extent, in that their actions helped determine their futures. Being able to choose one's own actions is something all witches, wizards, and muggles have a right to. Oh, and magical creatures as well, I suppose, at least the smarter ones.
But seeing the future though divination? Everyone could try their hand at reading it, sure, but most auguries are vague, nonspecific things that could come to pass many different ways. It's for the best, really. Specific visions of the future rob us of choice; no one wants to feel as if their every second is predetermined. These general ones give us hints and guides, but let us interpret them and act upon them how we see fit."

Question 1
In my teacup I see a bumblebee, though the image is outlined in the tea dregs, appearing in the ivory of the cup itself, which I’ve read is a positive omen because white is a color of peace and balance. The bumblebee indicates that if I continue to work hard, my work will pay off for me in the end and I will be rewarded for it, possibly with perfect grades, although I can’t be certain. A bumblebee could also mean that big news is coming much in the way that hives are buzzing with communication between their members. Perhaps Hogwarts will be fortunate enough to host the Triwizard tournament again, or something equally exciting!
Question 2
“Everyone should be able to foresee the future.â€
I believe that everyone is born with an innate ability to see the future, but that failure to begin to cultivate this gift early in life leads to a dulling of the sixth sense. Perhaps if divination were introduced earlier in a child’s life and a child was encouraged to make predictions and to look ahead into the unknown more often, there would be more successful seers among us. At present, however, I feel as though many of us have lost the innate ability and must start from scratch in an attempt to redevelop it. The potential is there for all of us, but we must work hard in order to really all be able to see the future.

Question 1
Vin looks at Ms. Trelawney then back to his teacup as she asks her questions. Vin squints at the tea leaves and begins to speak.
"I see... A man.. In a robe. He's there with a Chimaera, and they seem to be speaking to each other. The withering oak trees around them seem to whisper, their fallen leaves like long bygone love letters, stained by the tears of the heartbroken. The man in the robe tells the Chimaera 'keep her safe.' And with that the Chimaera bounds into the sky, seemingly ascending to the heavens. The trees weep for the man. They whisper to him 'You'll always be apart.' Along with other disheartening words. But he stands strong. The scene shifts. A beautiful eastern girl, surrounded by cherry trees in blossom on a red bridge. She seems to be a muggle, but a cat bounds down from the sky, and onto the railing. She smiles, and the trees whisper 'You will always be a part of each other.' Along with other encouraging words. The scene ends. That is all I could see."
Question 2
"I personally believe that not all people should be able to read the future, Muggle and wizard alike. If we all knew our rates, we'd all accept it, as if we had no free will of our own. We wouldn't try and change it, as if we knew the outcome, what would be the point in living any more before then? The muggles on the Titanic saw the iceberg, and instead of trying even harder to avoid it, they gave up. They thought they wouldn't be able to change what seemed to be written in stone, and they crashed without a single thought of saving themselves, besides from the few lifeboats they had."
