is that the challenger you need to beat a certain number of times before another challenger is released? if so how many battles before new one and what is the new one called. If I have the wrong challenger which one am I thinking of thanks in advance

Did you unlock Cursed Effigy, the Tormented with the Iron Fireside Lantern? It looks the same as the (regular) Cursed Effigy, which doesn't show up until Fireside.

There are several challengers that are released via # amount of wins, mostly (if not all?) CS:

Forj Matriarch via Molten Summoning Tome is most likely the one you are thinking of, the amount of wins for these challengers are all listed under the Battle section of achievements, so you can see the progress of how many times you've fought :)

Decidiwi / Meatslab / Eventide Phoenix / Fruit Punch are the other ones that spring to mind.
