i'm watching halloween specials rn lol and it got me thinking about trick or treating. when did you guys stop trick or treating?
also... any potential costume plans? my friend and i are thinking of dressing up as kandi kids bc how tacky and fun as hell. i miss 2008 <3
Living in Australia, Halloween celebrations are not a big thing here, and it saddens me to think of that fact. It's my favorite holiday, and barely anything happens for it. I've never been trick-or-treating, and we might only get 3-4 small groups of people come up to our door during the evening, but that's about it.
As for costumes, I have so many idea for costumes. But adding to the fact that there is no big celebration here for the holiday, if I was to dress up, I'd probably be sitting in my room, dressed as whatever I have chosen to be, because I would have nowhere to go where I could wear it around other people who are also dressed up. =
I'd really like to visit the US for Halloween someday. For now, I guess I'll just have to sit in my room and listen to Halloween music and eat candy I bought myself.
I only trick-or-treat here on Subeta, in my country it's not a thing unfortunately and I'd possibly end on a funny farm if I'd dress up as whatever and ask strangers for candies. XD
I stopped trick or treating by the time I hit 6th grade. It just seems a bit iffy to be trotting around post puberty and expecting random strangers to give away candy. Now I get to dress up and help friends give out treats to the little kids and that's pretty fun too. I did feel sort of awful the year I dressed as a zombie and scared some of the lil' trick or treaters so bad they needed their mommies to come hold hands as they got their candy.
The husband and I usually hold a Halloween party for all of our friends and one of the favorite decorations is a big ol' cauldron filled with all the REALLY GOOD Halloween candy. Full sized candy bars and such, and trick or treat bags so they can grab a handful of goodies to take home with them.
I was never really into it. Candy wasn't enough of a reward for me to walk around and ask. I didn't even participate in the chocolate donation drives for school. Canvassing in any way has always been a huge nope for me.
I'd totally get excited though before, and then by time the day came I just kind of lost interest. Even when I was a little kid. Part of the turn off too though is I hate the gory ugly side of Halloween.
Nowadays I buy candy, watch the specials, and celebrate the solstice. I like seeing the nippers in their costumes. :D I feel bad though, because in my area it's often cold and wet or cold and snowy, or just cold for Halloween.
I was always really tall for my age (still am XD), so people started giving me sass about trick-or-treating a little earlier than they should have, thinking I was "too old". It sucked, but I learned to enjoy handing out candy (and my folks always bought extra, so I'd get any leftovers).
Hallowe'en has always been one of my favourite holidays, so I've always found some reason to dress up and celebrate. For example, one year the ex and I dressed up as Riff Raff and Magenta and went to a Rocky Horror showing. Eventually I got into the tradition of throwing costume parties, to the point where people would know I was going to be throwing one before I'd even announced it, and had already set aside the date for it.
Right now I've found myself in that awkward stage of "a little too old to party like I used to, but don't have any kids yet" - so Hallowe'en isn't as exciting as it used to be, or (hopefully) will be again in the future.
As it stands for this year, I don't currently have any plans. My husband is going to be out of town for work that weekend, so I don't know if I'll end up doing anything. =/ Ah well.
