This lesson contains a Practical assignment.
With a flick, the image swirled and changed, showing the dead person coming to life and lumbering toward an unknown person. "There are a few ways to get rid of them however, and that's light or fire. Inferi are extremely fragile toward flames, and will usually be instructed by their master to shirk away from any light, and thus are very ill equipped for long usage in battle. They are especially looked down upon because it's considered disrespectful of the dead, to manipulate their bodies in this way. Inferi can also be enchanted to speak, which can become confusing if you come upon a recently deceased inferi that talks like a normal witch or wizard. However, their eyes are the tell of them. Their eyes will appear milky white or clouded over. As the saying goes, "Beware the stranger whom travels at night, sunglasses adorned against the light." That's not a one hundred percent tell though, as some of the more- hipster- of our lot still like to wear their shades at all times." Professor Valdez chuckled and then flicked his hook so that the smoke showing the images vanished.
"Now, I'm a Professor that really enjoys seeing what his students can do without being spoon fed every little thing. I want you to choose a spell that you might use against an incoming Inferi, and show me. You can choose any kind of spell that you think would work. Light, fire, even a spell that would just help you find out their motives. Anything! I will award house points for the most creative and interesting thought behind which spell you've chosen." A smile finally broke upon his face. It was apparent that he was really looking forward to see what they had come up with. "You may begin!"

Your assignment today
Please roleplay doing the wand movement and saying the incantation as if you were doing it in front of the Professor. Please explain why you chose the spell you chose, and what it is for. Be aware that not everyone will get the spell right their first try, but any effort shall be rewarded! Professor Valdez does not like students to talk to their classmates unless instructed.

Camille stepped forward, nervously realizing that she was the first to go.
"Um, I'll be doing the Baubillious charm that would release a bolt of lightning towards the intended. I, er, realize this might not be the best spell if a hoard of Inferi were to come at me from different directions, but I'm hoping it would ward at least some of them off."
Taking a deep breath and trying not to look at anyone else, Camille shifted her feet slightly apart and shouted, "baw-BILL-ee-us!", flicking her wand in a sharp, downward motion.

edit: totally forgot to add the wand movement there fml)
Ravenna remembered reading about a spell for light... "I'll try lumos solem. It produces a powerful ray of light." She took one step forward and, pointing her wand, shouted "LOO-mos SO-lem!"

Amanda stepped forward, nervous about her first attempt at magic in front of the professor. Also, nervous about how well her spell would work. Hoping she didn't set the classroom on fire, she took a deep breath and stepped foreward.
"I'm going to use Incendio, the fire-making spell. If I cast it strong enough, it should deter all the Inferi." She got out her wand and held it steadily in her right hand. Her wand made a long sweeping motion, followed by a strong flick in the air. She said in a strong voice, "In-CEN-dio!"

Destiny confidently strolled up to the front of the class room. She had decided to put on a little bit of a show, and pointed her wand at a manikin-like figure in the corner of the room. "Accio!" She half shouted. The professor raised an eyebrow, but decided to not comment.
With a downward slash of the wand, she shouted a spell no one expected to hear. "Ducklifors!*"
The class burst out laughing and a grin spread across her face. A small, yellow duck wattled towards her feet, but she quickly pointed her wand and shouted out another spell before it could reach her. "Depulso!"
The duck flew towards the wall of the room and landed about a foot away, clearly dazed by its experience.
She turned to go back to her seat, but not before muttering a counter-spell to turn the duck back into a manikin. Professor Valdez wouldn't be happy having a pet duck, after all.
Spells: Accio - Summoning spell. Just used to bring a fake "inferni" towards her. Ducklifors - Turns an object into a duck. Used to make the "inferni" not a real threat anymore. Depulso - Banishing charm. Used to banish the duck.
*The Wikia says this is only used on living things, but I'm using in on an inanimate object for the sake of this.
Ernessa stepped forward next and raised her wand. 'I think the most practical way to get rid of the inferi would be to use lumos maxima and sort of throw the ball of light at them, I've been practising this charm all summer as it's really useful; you might want to shield your eyes.' 'LOO-mos MAX-i-muh!' she shouted as she flicked her wand softly, drew it back and flicked it a second time, harder. A big ball of light shot from her wand, lasting a few seconds and then disappearing again. 'I'm still practising to make it last longer' she said, looking disappointed.

Megan shakily makes her way to the middle of the classroom to perform her spell. She pictures clearly in her mind the images she's seen of Inferi in books and of the example Professor Valdez has given and pulls her wand out to perform.
Moving her hand in a slight curve, point then curve back she said "Incendio!" with as much command as she could muster and to her great surprise a wave of fire appeared in front of her then dissipated. Blinking back her surprise and regaining her senses back she turned to Professor Valdez and explained "I chose the Incendio charm for the effectiveness it represents in regards to light and fire. I found the charm while studying a bit ago and when you mentioned the two things Inferi fear that became the best spell in my mind to use should you be caught unawares and need something quickly to defend yourself.
Something I was wondering though with this charm, is the amount of fire it produces based on how you say the spell? Such as the more force you use, the larger the wave of fire and vice versa, the less force you use the smaller the wave?"

After watching her classmates successfully complete the task, it was Tates turn. She quickly ripped a blank page out of her notebook and crumpled it up into a ball. Walking to the middle of the rooms she placed the paper ball onto the floor. "Since I want to use something different,If I could ask everyone to take a step back that would be lovely...just in case I mess this up. I do really love fire." She smirks, causing the kids in class to all walk to the corner of the room.
Taking a deep breathe, Tate sharply raised her wand and pointed it swiftly at the paper ball and shouted "kon-FRING-goh", which exploded the paper ball and set it on fire. "hey it actually worked!" she cheered to herself as everyone went back to their seats. Tate quickly picked up the burnt papers and returned to her seat.

Chook could not help think of the song "My hands are shaky and my knees are weak I can't seem to stand on my own two feet", (but not for the same reason Elvis sang it), as she imagined an incoming Inferi heading straight towards here. Holding tight onto her wand she began to move the wand as a conductor would his baton but in a sideways figure eight. This helped to calm her slightly and she decided on the Transfiguration spell, Avifors, where a jet of blue light shoots from the wand, erupting upon hitting the target and solidifys them into a bird. Standing tall and taking a deep breath she began her incantation. In a loud voice she shouted "AH-vi-fors" while at the time making her hand and wand movement firm and decisive.

Not wanting to make any mistakes i slowly looked about at the rest of the class.I was set with stage fright and i knew it...i didn't like being in front of a lot of people. I just wanted to get this over with as fast as i could, maybe it wouldn't be to bad then.I slowly waved the wand back and forth and spoke the words for creating the light i needed. Proferet magnam copiam lucis!!! And surprisingly a bright light shone in the very spot i pointed the wand....i did it!!!I looked about the class and smiled..I was so amazed that it worked, but i didn't want to give anyone the idea that i didn't know what i was doing so i went right back to my seat in the class. Inside i was just bursting at what i just managed to do. House of Gryffindor
It was finally m turn to go, i stepped forward nervously looking around at everyone staring at me. "I am going to do the charm, Ashen Flamous. It will create a ring of fire around the charm caster warding off enemies." I attempt to cast the spell "Ash-en Flam-ous" while spinning my wand in a circle and then pointing it straight up. It doesn't work... I try one more time this time not being so nervous and just focusing on my wand alone. "Ash-en Flam-ous" I do the motion and it works! I guess sometimes reading so much about spells doesn't prepare me as much as i thought to actually cast one, i will need to pay more attention in this class.
Setsu hung back, watching her classmates and thinking carefully about which spell to use. She stepped to the front of the class, finally deciding, and placed a small pile of pencil-top erasers on the floor. She extended her wand, making the wishbone-shaped gesture with its tip, and spoke softly. "In-SEN-dee-o" (incendio) to light them on fire with a small flame. She then turned to the mannequin used earlier by Destiny, and pointed her wand at it with force. "Oh-PUG-noh!" (Oppugno) she shouted, and the flaming erasers began to swarm and attack the mannequin. After a few moments, they dropped to the floor, and the flames extinguished. She faced the class. "I could use any small flammable object similarly, so I wouldn't have to be in very close range to the Inferi and risk my safety.." She returned to where she had stood before. (Ravenclaw)
Thana shuffled nervously, waiting for her turn. All of the other students performed very well, and she worried about the magic she might use. A determined, unstoppable and dark attacker... she considered, weighing up several spells in her mind. I don't know enough to kill one yet, so..maybe the best offence is a good defence? Reaching her turn, Thana braced herself and stepped forward. "I- I'm not a high level wizard, and I'm too inexperienced to gamble on an attack that could potentially fail and leave me open. So..I wouldn't try to destroy the inferi, just to..avoid coming into any contact with it. Or them. Hopefully I could buy myself time before I found help." Thana explained, hoping that she appeared far more confident than she felt.
"First, I would keep on the move. Wherever I had to pause to eat or sleep, I would set a series of Stealth Sensoring Spells to detect anyone..anything..that entered. I..don't know how to cast that yet," she admitted. "I've only read about it. But, if one got too close, I would use a defensive spell like, uh -" Thana looked around, locating and training her wand upon the mannequin others in her class had used. "Leh-vi-COR-pus!" she shouted, with a flourish. The mannequin shuddered for a moment, then eventually flipped, lifting upside-down high into the air above their heads. "Oh." Thana said, surprised at her success. "I didn't know if that would work on a non-human object. And I haven't practised that one much anyway. Well. Um. So, the inferi..us -" she gestured at the mannequin, "- would remain hanging like that until I said the counter-jinx. Which, obviously, I wouldn't. I'd just start running." She paused, frowning in thought. What if it attacked on the road? Or somehow bypassed the sensor spells?
"Of course, if one surprised me while I was travelling and managed to grab me, I could use the Revulsion Jinx, b- but I don't know how to cast that either." Her shoulders sagged, downcast that she couldn't make as interesting a display as the others. There is one spell to show them. she realised, a little nervous. But I'll have to be very careful. "Or, if I really had to use an offensive spell to get away, then- " she steadied herself, quickly taking aim, holding her wand like a dagger before her, "Con-FRIN-goh!" she stated clearly, jabbing the wand in the familiar and very controlled fashion toward the floating mannequin.
The mannequin exploded in a shower of wood shavings.
"The Blasting Curse. My aunty taught me. For protection. She's an Auror. D- don't use it unless you've been taught, it's really very, very dangerous!" Thana explained hurriedly, watching the shavings rain down upon the classroom - and a few of her classmates, too. "And, er - that's how I'd do it." Her cheeks reddened, and she quickly returned to her place in the crowd.

Rox slowly stepped forward, unsure if what she wanted to do would work. She tried to remember the spell she wanted to use, wanted to be sure she had it exactly right, as she didn't want the whole classroom to catch fire. She raised her wand and with a quick downward slash she pronouced the spell she wanted to use in-SEN-dee-oh TREE-ah (Incendio Tria). She was sure that this spell would get the Inferi on fire, knowing that it was an improvement of the Incendio or fire making spell she had learned earlier and would create larger flames than any of the other spells she knew.

Hannah waited until it was her turn. She walked forward and pulled out a small bowl like a fish bowl. "I'm going to do a few spells. One Transfiguration spell to turn them into a fish, the Levitation charm to move them into the bowl and a water spell to fill the bowl. I chose them, because I thought it would be fun to do something other then fire and bubbles from fish are just adorable!" She placed the bowl on the ground, cleared her throat and said, "PISS-ee-fors," pointing the wand at it. After turning it into a fish she moved her hand in a curve motion to the left and a tiny twist up and said, "Wing-GAR-dee-um levir-O-sa." It didn't work. "Oh! That's right, no r in it." She moved her hand in the same motion once more and said, "Wing-GAR-dee-um levi-O-sa." She moved the fish into the bowl and then moving her hand in the shape like an s said, "AGUA-menti." She then took the bowl to Professor Valdez, handed it to him, smiled and curtsied. Afterwards she skipped away back to her original watching place.

Kainra stepped forward and sighed. He was nervous, as he knew some spells since he is a pureblood, but he never really performed them much, especially not in front of a crowd of students. "Well...here it goes." Kainra said and swirled his wand. "Lumos duo" Kainra pointed his wand at a wall and an extremely bright beam of light went from his wand to the wall. A smile came to Kainra's face, almost out of shock of getting the spell correct on his first attempt, and he waved his wand to end the spell. The beam of light faded. "I did it..." he whispered to himself. While he was around many people would could use magic, he never really used it himself before. He had no need, since he was exploring many muggle areas with his parents. He only read in some books about spells before.

Chrystle stepped up and took a deep, calming breath. She pulled out her wand and tried to point it straight at nothing, and with a very exaggerated point and flick she said clearly, "Incendio" A few sparks and flames jumped from her wand, not like she was expecting, and landed with a disappointing crackle on her favorite book. "No! Finite! Aguamenti!" She waved her wand, doing the movements her god mother did when she needed to conjure water. She had not thought it out. The water did more damage to the book than the fire. She sighed, picked up her book, shook it off, and slunk back out of attention.

At the back of the classroom, Cardamom narrowed her eyes at the smokey image in the front of the classroom and pursed her lips. She did not like the idea of burning the corpse of someone who had once been a living person. It was bad enough, as Professor Valdez had said, that someone had the gall to reanimate a human being who deserved to rest in peace. But...
She sighed, flipping her hair over her shoulder and pulling out her wand, her grip a little harder than usual. Fire spells were more her forte than light spells. That, and well, decaying bodies tended to have a lot of fat and oil to burn as the muscle broke down. Little wonder Inferi were so helpless against heat.
"Incendio is small... just sparks," she told herself under her breath, trying to think of something that might take better to the sort of "kindling" available in this sort of scenario. "Ustulos would not be strong enough... probably just singe the guy..." It was a spell used a lot in potions, to help build slow heat under the cauldrons. "Adurossi is about the same. Better for smaller projects..."
Ah. Well. That really left the big one then.
Cardamom looked up around at her classmates, unsure whether or not this particular spell would be allowed. It was one of her NEWT spells, she was a sixth year after all, but she didn't want to worry any of the younger students. She shuffled to the front of the room and placed herself in front of one of the manikins, running through water spells in case she made a mess of this.
"PERURO PERUSSI PERUSTUM." The spell - used to consume a whole object in hot, fast flames - needed a flat tone; her wand was held out similarly in front of her. The sixth year swept horizontally in front of her in a quick motion, then curled her wrist around under and up again. The manikin immediately burned into orange flames, the whooshing sound roaring through to the back of the classroom. She thought she may have caught the professor giving her a sigh, so Cardamom quickly ended her spell and went about restoring the poor wooden "Inferi." Well, at least she hadn't set the whole room on fire, right...?

Emma Mcmonigle - Hufflepuff
Emma watched as each of her classmates took turns attacking the "inferi" Professor Valdez had provided for their lesson. The first-year girl nearly fell out of her chair as Cardamom Kettling sent a roaring blast of flame that nearly consumed the mannequin from her position at the back of the class.
Once the spell had ended, Emma looked up to see her fellow Hufflepuff trying to repair the damage she had done. Emma took the moment to rifle through her copy of The Standard Book of Spells: Grade 1. She was looking for a particular spell she remembered reading about at the beginning of term--something about a water-proof fire...
She found it, reading quickly to understand the spell she was about to cast better with the buzzing of her classmates' voices sounding in the back of her mind. Emma didn't want to wait to be the last person in the class to try--she wanted to get it over with.
Emma stood up from her seat, clearing her throat as she pointed her wand at the dummy Inferi.
"Lacarnum Inflamarae," she said, with a some-what shaky voice.
A small stream of blue-violet fire hissed through the air to strike the mannequin and knock it over, though the mannequin didn't catch fire.
"Well, spit," Emma grumbled as she slid back into her chair.
After listening intently to the lecture, Rose tried to think of some spells that might be used to repel Inferi. "Lumos... Incendio... What else? I know there must be more," she thought, becoming more nervous as her turn approached. "Maybe I could use Incendio Duo?... I haven't practiced that one much though..."
It was finally Rose's turn. At this point, her nerves were making her a bit shaky. She stood up and took a little step forward. "I'm going to use the spell Incendio Duo, since Inferi are repelled by fire." She raised her wand.
"Incendio Duo!" Rose cried, bringing her wand down a bit too forcefully. A shot of sparks and flame erupted from the end of her wand towards the mannequin. It did not catch fire, but instead started smoking slightly at the point of contact with the jet of flame that had been sent at it.
Still, Rose was pleased with her spell - but for only a second, as she suddenly realized that she had set the sleeve of her robe on fire while casting the spell. "Oh!" She frantically tried to think of a water spell that would put it out. "A-aguamenti!" she shrieked, waving her wand wildly. A stream of water burst forth from her wand, putting out the fire on her clothing, but also soaking her textbooks as well as the student next to her.
"I'm so sorry," Rose whispered, mortified. She slowly sank back into her seat, not even daring to glance at Professor Valdez.
