I like how the questing for this current event boss has been done (especially since the tweaks that were made during the second round), and I actually find the quest more engaging than the actual battle system (don't hurt me for saying that, it's just my personal taste in gameplay). There is just one tweak that I'd like to suggest for future bosses, however: A progress/health bar for the questers.
Right now, in order to see just how far along things are, I have to go all the way to the BC and toss a pet into the boss fight to get a heads-up on how far we still have to go. Maybe instead, after the end stage of the quest, we can get a graphic of some kind to clue us in on everyone's collective progress so far. It would be encouraging, and really make the questers feel more like they're really part of the fight. It's the little touches that make all the difference, you know?
"Nooo! I will not read your book of meanness and swirls!!"
This would be a nice add.
I completed a couple of Mathis's quests, but I have no real idea what, if any, help it was or how far it was to go. Even something a little more descriptive like "the fighter who used the weapon you made dealt 100 worth of damage to the creature" or yeah, "the creature is down to only 148542452 health now!" would be at least some indication that quests have some effect.
Here's a mind twist of a suggestion, too: what if, by completing a quest right precisely at the end, a quester could potentially win the final battle?
Ooh! I love that twist! That would certainly spice things up! XD I don't know how popular that would be among the people who are super into battling, but it would definitely be cool.

I too would love to be able to see a progress bar for the boss without having to start a battle :) I battled some, but my pet wasn't strong enough to do much damage. Plus it would be nice just to pop in for a quick check on how things are going when I don't have time to play Subeta (like when I'm grading papers and really shouldn't be here, ugh).
If you want to have a chance at landing the final strike in a boss battle, you should actually have to battle.
Yup.
This would be useful. I didn't even know what effect Mathis' quest had until I stumbled across a staff post somewhere that said the finished weapon does ~250 damage. That could have been displayed on the quest completion page or something.

Yeah, I'm not against a more cohesive way to show or mention how much your quests are affecting the battle, but I wouldn't agree with adding the specific numbers. It's bitter and petty, but I was so frustrated when a couple groups got pinged to help finish off the first Kiyo. All of a sudden 10 mil was done within a minute and I was sad because either we could have been killing her faster if everyone just participated or if no one was pinged the people still battling would've gotten more chances to earn overall damage and had a better chance of landing the final blow.
So long story short definitely yes to more immersion and a way to show how the other methods used for boss battles have an impact. But no to giving out at least incredibly accurate boss battle status to those not actually battling. (Like if texts changed when it went down to 2/3 health and 1/3 health I'd be fine.)

I would've loved to see how much damage the items I supposedly sent over were doing. Maybe it could be influenced by the rarity of items we put in for the quest, so weapons made from rare items = more damage. That way people can decide how much they want to spend on a single quest before asking for different items, if the quest they're doing has the potential to hit the boss with 500 damage rather than 250.
That's how I thought it worked, originally, and was a little disappointed to find otherwise. I'd love to see the rarity of the item increased the potential damage.
I totally agree with you guys! A quest bar of progress would have been super helpful. I didn't even realize how far behind I was on the plot, since I'm not on every day. I didn't even get the opportunity to battle against anyone for this plot. Definitely missed out :(
