...I thought some of mine were, but I'm never satisfied. Like, I thought Tak was done except for a couple of expensive TC items from past October collections. But then I found a couple tweaks to make on his profile. And more stuff to put in his TC. Et cetera. And he's one of my two who won the spotlight, so I SHOULD be done with him :P

So now I'm making myself go through each pet one at a time, in the order I've arranged them, tweaking and finishing stuff up. I'm telling myself that a.) I can't move on to work on another pet until I finish the one I'm on (currently Drifblim, pet ), and b.) I can't create/adopt any new pets until I've finished or adopted out all 15 I have now. We'll see how that goes; I have trouble finishing projects whether in real life or on Subeta.

So do any of y'all have this same problem of being a pet perfectionist? :P How do you deal with it?

"I say let me never be complete, I say may I never be content..."

I actually go through periods of "pet crisis" or "self loathing" from time to time. I remember last summer I took down every single pet profile for about two months. Usually I would feel the urge to redo and improve their stories or profiles. Last year was major story update, and this year was more about profiles. I'd say it's an exhausting but fulfilling process.

Also their TCs are almost never done, for sure!

Though I never had any problems getting new pets without finishing all my pets. I like to keep my options open by getting inspiring names whenever I can. It really saves me a lot of troubles when I suddenly have an idea, and I'm able to use one of my existing pets for that idea.

Yeah, definitely TCs are always a work in progress! I don't mind that so much because I love finding new items that fit a pet. And I like your perspective on getting new pets. I adopted out several that I had finished profiles on because I didn't have story ideas, or didn't want to work on their stories... now that we have tons of slots, I wish I had kept them :( Your pets are just lovely! (Although I'm insanely jealous you have the name Bartleby ;) )

I know that feel :( Little pieces of my omniverse are coming through in my profiles, but if I wrote it all out, I'd never finish. Lots of Lovecraft mythos, and lots of balloons. Lots of balloons.

Nah, mine are never done, but I usually get to a place where I think they're good enough and can ignore them for a while. That said, my way of handling it can backfire on me. For example, when Penel won pet spotlight a couple weeks back I panicked a little because I knew her story was out of date/I was still missing some key TC items/etc. I was just like, "No, no, she can't win yet she's not PERFECT."

I totally know what you mean. is the story of my subeta pet life! There are definitely pets that I wish I hadn't adopted out before T_T.

Awww...thank you! You have lovely pets yourself! And about Bartleby, I have a silly subeta related story to tell. I used to stalk the name, and eventually got it for Willard's character. Then, after a few years, I got Willard, and just had to let Bartleby go since I maxed out my slots. Then, I began to stalk Bartleby again. During the time, he had two different owners. Then, one day, I just found him in the pound :D!

My pets are never finished, story or character wise. They're constantly growing and changing. Heck, one of my favorite characters has a completely different relationship with a huge rival of hers in a future storyline.

The best way to be happy with someone is to be happy alone. That way, company is a matter of choice and not a necessity.

Haha Bartleby's story convinces me to keep checking on certain names I want XD (Mostly balloon-related...) Maybe they'll turn up free one day :)

I just went and looked at Willard, expecting him to reference the movie (the one with the rats...). Instead I find TERRIFYING CLOWN, gah! Great story though, and I LOVE his custom Balloony ♥

Definitely! Never give up on a name! Half of my pets have silly stories of how I came to get that name after so much waiting, stalking, and such...xD

Oh, haha, I had a weird habit of using fandom names for OCs back then. But it changed after I started to have fan pets. Also that's why I separate my OC pets and fan pets on my profile. People do tend to get confused for a sec xD. Thanks for reading his story ^_^, and I'm glad you liked it. He's my precious baby!

I did get Zeppelin back :) I got him from the pound months ago because of the balloon related name, despite the underscores, then pounded him when I gave up on the character I was working on. But then I saw him in the pound again the other day and took him back because I felt guilty ^X^; Not sure what I'll do with him, but I'm glad he's home. (Now if the name Zeppelin would just open up :P )

Congrats on getting him back! And don't feel bad about not having an idea at the moment. Something will eventually click, and you'll think of something wonderful for him.

I'm never satisfied with my pets and I will never be content with any of them.

I'm glad I own Failure for the above reasons.

I was talking about this on the How Many Unfinished Pets Do You Have thread. I'll paraphrase, but my pets are pretty much never done. They are in a constant state of evolution and I'll always be in the mood to create more for them even if I know exactly who and what they are. Always more to make! That in combination with my incredible slowness at working on their Subeta profiles means, by the time I finish any aspect of them on Subeta, they've probably changed to the point where it needs to be updated, and so I undo my own work and must start again, keep adding things, change things around. I am usually satisfied with that process though. :P Like said, it's exhausting but fulfilling work.

I've been trying to be more organic about it recently. I used to get into the habbit of writing short stories on my profiles, which turned out really good, but weren't representative of the character in the way I wanted them to be (felt like too small of a snapshot and it was hard to pick tiny pieces to display when I have so much), and it wasn't satisfying even when I completed entire profiles that way. For now I am sticking to abstract notes, TC items, very simple profiles, and art in my sketchbooks, until I find a way to organize things on Subeta the way I like. I love how Neopets gives you an entire other page to put their information on, I miss that and feel a little restricted with the Subeta system, but I need to flex my css muscles again and make pages that get around that. It will help me make real progress on these guys again.

Fiction is an organic, versatile thing. Even when a book is done and bound, the story and characters are unending. Sometimes I think that's why we try to keep them in tangible ways so much - there's a sort of immortality to stories, so long as there are people around to discuss and read them. In that light, I don't really see characters as being 'done' or having a clear stop point - which makes finishing pet profiles daunting, as it's like trying to capture an infinite.

Setting more realistic goals, like deciding what I want the particular profile to convey of the character as opposed to how I'm going to squeeze them into 1500 words or less, is the only way I've been able to get anything done.

AND EVEN THEN IT CAN BE A CRAPSHOOT

But putting everything together is the fun! I've only finished a single profile, and the character himself is one that I write often, so he's constantly evolving (or devolving, as the case may be) - so even though his page is set, it's not ever really complete.

Having laid it to rest, though, made it so I could move on to the next pet, and not linger forever (even though I do go back and add links when I write another piece with him/his story)

So at least, when it comes to pets as OCs, nah, I don't think they're ever finished - but I also don't really think they have to be! Sometimes, the point is the process, not the end result

(also I'm a total fiend for treasure chests +_+ so collecting items/building them up is a big part of the entertainment, even though I'll get distracted from other aspects of the profile lmao working on pets is what I find the value in, it's just a bonus if I manage to get all the pieces together)
