As some of you know, my downstairs neighbours are complete douches. Today, after they heard me walk in from work, they cranked the music. It got even louder after I finished vacuuming, which was 5min ago now. What is really getting on my nerves is that they turn it off and on again. I swear (I pretty much know) they are doing it to piss me off and get back at me for calling the landlord twice on them about their music/tv volume.

I don't know what to do anymore. My landlord said I can keep calling him and if it's ever after 11pm (our nose bylaw) to call the police. I've been writing down what they're doing, but I'm at my wits end here. I'm so tired of them.

My mom told me if I keep calling my landlord, I'll be the one who will get evicted.

CC, what else can I do?

Have you gone down there and demanded that they stop? Don't play nice any more.

I would try calling the police if it's after 11 and they're still blatantly ignoring their noise level. They need to learn how to be considerate of others. Maybe take it a step further and record how loud they are in case they deny it. If you can hear the TV, music, yelling from your apartment see if your phone picks up the noise on a recording and note the time. If you are able to record the noise from your apartment especially, the more evidence you'll have and the less chance they have of denying it.

I would be super nervous to do that. What if they violently lash out at her?

I had this problem a few years back. I finally got sick of it, opened the door and yelled at the top of my lungs that if they didn't turn the GDMF music off I'd call the cops, then promptly followed through with it (a few times). Sadly the drunken dicks never did learn

I've called my landlord twice in May (the month they moved in), once in June and once this month. I went to their door once to ask them to turn down the music and they slammed the door in my face. I called my landlord right away :/

I tried recording it with my camera and sadly it didn't pick up the music. I even called my mom asking if she can hear it and she said no. I did call the police. It was 10pm and I was sick and tired. The women I spoke to (the reporting department) said I can make a complaint about noise no matter what time of day. I never knew that. Sadly, they turned the music off 15min after I called, so I had to call the police back and tell them to send anyone out.

If your landlord told you to keep calling then he's not going to evict you. You and your family need to plea your case to the landlord to either relocate you or relocate the other tenant. You pay to live there and you shouldn't have to endure hostile living conditions. If the landlord doesn't comply with your request then I would look for a lawyer and sue them for moving expenses. I know it sounds like a lot of work but you have rights.

First of all I'd ignore your mother's warning, the notion that you'll be evicted for repeatedly calling your landlord makes no sense considering he/she directly gave you permission to do so. Plus you are not the problem. Has anything resulted from your multiple conversations with the landlord? Has he/she made any attempts to deal with the other tenant?

You might want to have a discussion with your family about finding a lawyer because if you repeatedly report problems with this tenant, request that either they be evicted or relocated or that you be relocated and action isn't being taken you can sue the landlord for subjecting you to hostile living conditions. That may sound extreme, but it's well within your rights as a paying tenant.

One thing I would NOT do is take 's advice to confront the tenant yourself, particularly given the result of an attempt you already did make. Slamming the door in your face is something that could escalate to lashing out at you with physical violence.

I also second that you cannot be evicted for calling your landlord. Your landlord is renting to these tenants and you are 100% entitled to a safe, and happy home life. Which it doesn't seem like that is how it is. These people are blatantly being assholes (excuse my language) because they're quite obviously children who cannot get their heads out of their anal cavity. It doesn't hurt them to just live peacefully and realize "Dang we're being ridiculous with this music/TV bs". They're doing it out of spite. Just keep making noise complaints to the police and your landlord if it's past quiet hours.

After enough complaints and calls they will do something about it. The landlord will not be able to ignore anymore. Are there other tenants other then these rude people? Maybe get them to complain as well with you?

My roommate and I had this problem in my last apartment in college. The guys next door played music so loud and with such a powerful bass that the cutlery in the drawer across the apartment rattled. Management refused to do anything because they never caught the guys in the act, and when we called the police, they turned the music down, got to the cops before we did, and immediately started playing up how we were out to get them.

Eventually, my roommate got very sick and was woken in the middle of the night (and the middle of the week) by these idiots. I may have gone to their door half dressed with a skillet in one hand and yelled at them until they caved. Apparently I'm scarier than three young bros.
