I'll take my Pet Gloopy as an example to explain. Gloopy was originally a normal Chibi Kerubi, a Pet that looks like this: Click me!

I got an overlay for him and sent it in as a Custom Overlay. Now everyone sees this overlay instead of the original Subeta art work in every place, be it on his profile or on my Battle Stats Page and that is what distingiushes a sent in Custom Overlay from an overlay that you just code onto your Pet profile.

Yeah, that's basically it. You can draw (or have one drawn for you) an overlay for your pet. If you only want it to show on the profile, there's a code for it (I don't know what it is off hand though, sorry D: ). A custom overlay is if you want it to show up for everyone and all around the site, you can submit it for approval here and it will cost you 500 CSC.

If you don't want to pay for the overlay, you can use an image and replace your original pet image with it through coding. But it would only show in your pet page, not in a news about pet spotlight, for example.
