Just an idea I had when a quest asked me for one of the floppy disks. We have the in an array of colors, and possibly other outdated items in Bits and Bytes, the VCRs in Home Appliances, and Book Tapes in Book Nook.

I honestly think the disks and VCRs should be retired, but the Book Tapes could be changed to CDs if people would be upset about readable items retiring. (Although I don't know how many people buy audiobooks on CD anymore, either... I don't listen to them, so I couldn't tell you!) The other items could be replaced with updated tech too if need be (flash/thumb drives, disc players), although that would mean more work updating the art and descriptions.

I dunno, just a thought I had. The items don't really bother me as they are, but it does seem weird to see floppy disks around the site XD

You mean you don't still use floppy disks? that 1.44 MB capacity can almost fit a whole song on it! why retire that?

I don't think that the items should be updated, simply because this sort of technology still exists in our world. They can be used for 'retro technology' TC items, for example.

We could add more updated technology like thumb drives but I don't think they should replace old items completely.

Yeah, I'm not crazy about the updating idea either. Mostly I was thinking about the book tapes because I don't know if people would like having a readable item retired.

I don't really see why they should be retired just because they are 'obsolete' in the real world. We have some items like the and , should we get rid of those as well? I don't know, the idea of retiring/updating obsolete tech items seems silly.

But on topic, i'm not a fan of retiring or updating those items. Make new items on the subject like portable hard drives, kumos usb sticks and stuff like that: yes. Touching the old: nope.

Let's be honest, floppy disks are awesome. Not only they're smaller than DVDs and BD disks, but they also have plastic protection so you can keep them in your pocket all day and they'd work like charm.

But seriously I don't see why they should be updated. This is Subeta so it doesn't matter what is most commonly used in the real world. And it's not like they completely disappeared from existence either. I think I could find one or two at home if I search hard enough.

Yeah I don't think they should be changed, for obvious reasons. But releasing more updated items wouldn't hurt either. I wouldn't necessarily want to see the outdated things retire in the meantime either, personally

I grew up in Silicon Valley, and there is (or was) an awesomecool humongous warehouse called Weird Stuff that had everything from every time pre-WWII to the present and obscure stuff from other countries and odd milspec item and university surplus stuff. If you needed to make something or adapt something or find that spare wire that no longer was sold but your device still used? Go to Weird Stuff! The founders of Apple certainly did.

That said, three years ago I Suggested that Bits & Bytes get an update and got a positive response from staff at the time. Memory sticks, flash drives, spare monitors, combined router-modems, universal services and streaming contracts like SuBetfliks and Ytivulu, music resource sites like aTunesBus, and apps available from NicoDaemon.

I don't agree with replacing old items completely, it would screw over any pet tc's that focus on "older" things. I still have my VCR in real life, along with hundreds of vhs tapes. Just because they're "outdated" doesn't mean I'm going to destroy them and replace them with dvds. You can have both.
