I think this has been asked before, but I can't find it. I need to make my pet unhappy so she can play with items. I have not collected her salary, or trained her, but she still has 10/10. So, I love her, but, um, I need her unhappy to do Major's Quests.

All of your pets have minions, which means they will all be at 10/10 happiness forever until you take the minions away.

the Lakeside Resort and the Rathskeller Inn will make your pets happy if they're lodged, independent of whether or not your pet has a Minion.

I think if you fight with Maleria's Clawed Glove it will randomly make some of your pets unhappy. Dunno if this effect is strong enough to overcome minion or lodging or if it does for how long.

The title of this thread made me laugh, I'm sorry. But yeah, I just keep a pet without a minion because I do Drills every day and "play with [item]" is an easy task if you have an unhappy pet.

It does lower your pet's happiness regardless of minion or lodging. However your minion/lodging will refill it pretty quickly, but you will have plenty of time to play with your pet for that quest.
