I'm pretty sure there used to be a feature on this site that worked like an auction, where users would list their things and other users would place bets on them. I suggest that Subeta bring that idea back, but have it be completely staff controlled, and used for high value CS items (like old trunks or something. As far as I know, the Hustler doesn't have old trunks?).
For example, during the Black Friday Sale or some other special event, the Hustler might find a very, very limited amount of certain old trunks (or even a new one, if the idea takes off), but instead of selling it discreetly on the corner like he usually does, he can hold an auction for the trunk. The staff could set a starting bid and minimum increments (so to reduce the chance of devaluing the item), and users who really want a chance at the trunk could bet csc on it. At the end, the people who win the auction could be congratulated by the Hustler and get an achievement or something too. This makes it so that users have a chance at getting the item, the site makes money, and it becomes something like a competition that users save CS credits for.
I think it makes economic sense too because some of the old trunks are selling at really high prices in the shop search. For example, is going for 40mil. Using the current sp to csc conversion rate of 100csc per 5mil sp, that means that it the auction price would have to be 800csc for it to be not worth it to bet on the auction.
While I love the antique shop, I think this would've been a good idea for old event items too (except with sp instead of csc). I read so many comments on the antique shop from users writing off the antique shop entirely because of the prices, and while I personally think the prices are fair, I feel that this idea would've helped to adjust the prices closer towards what users are willing to pay. Also, because the auction would be like a once a year thing with limited quantities rather than a shop that's around all the time, the rarity and novelty of the items would be better preserved, thus helping to sustain demand for these items.
I don't think I really support this? But I wouldn't use it either way so it doesn't really affect me personally.
I know I wouldn't participate in an auction, especially considering old trunk items are hustled (maybe regularly isn't the right word, but often enough) and there's always the chance that whole trunks could be brought back someday. I mean just this month, they started bringing back all the old monthly collections. I would rather just wait than participate in an auction. [edit] I just wanted to add a note that I wouldn't do an auction for antique shop items either, speaking as someone who initially whined about the antique shop prices. I understand they're fair for what the points originally sold for, but they're still too high for me. I sold my minion collection rather than buying the antique shop ones and I took several items off my WL once the shop came out.
I also think it would just further complicate things becuase, how many copies would be auctioned? Would there be a reserve on them or would the auctions eventually get to the point where items are practically worthless because most people who wanted the items already bid on them? How long/how often would the auctions be to make sure everyone in different time zones has a fair chance to get the items?
You make a lot of really good points. Regarding your point on the complications of antique shop items, I think that the auctions should end at different times, so that everybody in a different time zone has a shot a making the ending bid. For example, if I am auctioning 4 copies of an item, each copy ends at a time that is best for each time zone.
In order to keep the items rare, maybe each year (or every 2 years, or whenever staff feels is appropriate to hold this), only a few items are auctioned off. For example, in 2016, they can hold an auction of just the old pirate items (or even just a few of the pirate items). I feel like because there are so many old event items and because there are new users all the time, the items shouldn't become worthless as long as staff are careful about how much they re-release. Besides, I don't think that an occasional auction has a much lower chance of devaluing an item than a year-round shop with set prices.
I personally feel that my suggestion would be beneficial for people like you who feel that the antique shop prices are too high! :) If the auction gets to a point where the prices are too high, people will opt out. The final auction price will be a price that somebody is willing to pay, rather than an arbitrary price set by staff that nobody wants to pay.
Ah, tbh, I had no idea that the trunks were being hustled, or that staff were thinking about bringing them back! If staff does want to bring them back every couple of years or so, I agree, it makes no sense to have an auction. If they have no plans to do this however, I think an auction would be a nice way to bring them back. :) Also, even if the auction idea doesn't work for trunks, it could potentially work for other high value items in the future
PS. Darkrai, I don't know if editing my post means that I ping you each time or not, but if it does, I'm sorry for the bother! I'm not trying to incessantly ping you! Just want to edit my post, haha
It only pinged me once c:
I still don't like this idea. Staff already got rid of the user auction feature, why should we bring back an official system? I actually think it's just as likely that prices would be out of control with this method rather than devalued because it's only a few copies a few times a year. At least with the antique shop, prices are static and you can get the items whenever you want to instead of having to wait months, and compete with other users for them.
I can already imagine this generating a lot of complaints about the site becoming pay-to-win if this is ever implemented.

Uhm no. Only because I've mentioned to Amber about bringing all the old trunks back into the CS for Black Friday or something, so like can we just keep the price 500CSC and not for auction? That'd be super cool.
And also no for old event items? Because that makes no sense. They are already going into the Antique Shop. Why are we going to complicate it with another site aspect? People are either going to want them and buy, or they're not.
Also the last actual costume trunk hasn't been hustled in years, so I don't think they are actually hustled anymore.
Oh, forgot to clarify that in my last post after pinged me, whoops. I originally said costume trunk items are hustled. And that there might be a chance staff could bring the trunks back someday (but no they never said that anywhere, I just wouldn't say there's a 100% chance they wouldn't do it either since they brought the collections back and all)
Oops, sorry. I assumed you said the entire trunks were hustled when Gandalf said "I had no idea that the trunks were being hustled". MY BAD SORRY GIRLIE. But yea the items are def still hustled, but I personally hate paying 250CSC for just one item OTL
YOU BRING BACK TRUNKS, RIGHT?
Sorry, when I read their post I caught it but by the time I replied I TOTALLY FORGOT
I wouldn't like this idea. Not only for the points already made, but . . . just imagine now much CSC might shoot up in price for those desperate to bid on those auctions. It's almost cringe worthy.
Unless they were sP auctions. But even so, naw nope
WEE YAY :*
It only takes one really rich user to ruin auctions for everyone. It's not a fairer system
No..Just no.
