so I moved into my new apt this week and I was so ready to fall in love with it! it's this vintage complex from the 60s or something with so many nice elements that have been kept up really well but the one drawback being. . it has a gas stove
I've never in my life used a gas stove up until this point. the first night I tried to use it I burned my damn burger so bad that the outside was charred and the inside still pink because I didn't know that obviously it's WAY hotter than an electric range. also the pilot light blew out while I was making fries because I stupidly shut the door too hard or had the window open or something. I had to call the landlord over like a mess and she lit it for me while trying to comfort me and tell me it's fine to just relight it if it goes out
ever since I've been deathly afraid of this thing. probably twice a day when I go into the kitchen I smell it to see if I smell gas so I don't DIE from poisoning or a gd explosion. like I've just been reading gas stove horror stories online and lemme tell you thankfully I have a toaster oven and microwave or I may starve in this place
I'm just really sad about this because I love cooking my own food and now I'm afraid to cook like a normal person!!! anyway, does anyone else have a gas stove? weird stories? are you afraid of them? etc?
As a person that's lived with a gas stove for 11 years, I can tell you that you really don't have to worry lol.
If there's a leak from the stove, you WILL smell it. It's not odorless by any means. And as a plus, if the power goes out you'll still be able to cook food, you'll just need to light the gas with a match, or a lighter. Get one of the long ones, that people use for candles and lighting grills.
I've been using a gas stove for almost a decade, and I'm not so worried about this. Maybe an hour after I cook, I'll have a "! Did I turn it off?" moment, but it'll pass once I've checked it! ;)

you're probably right; it's just so scary to me! I guess I'm at fault for not properly educating myself and then exploring the internet(of course I'd find awful things). I can't help but think "why are these things not outlawed????" HAHAHA
I'm an anxious person to new situations so I suppose after awhile I'll get used to this contraption and go back to my regular cooking routine. . hopefully
Just know something: You are not alone.
The reason they aren't outlawed is because modern gas stoves are completely safe :P
Is the gas stove still going okay? I'd also be scared to use one but it's comforting to read what Aztec said about the gas being smelly. A similar thing happened this previous memorial day, my dad used his grill for a cookout and left the gas still on for days. Literally days! My mom said she kept smelling something bad from outside and finally made him check. They're both smokers so I'm just thankful they didn't go outside with a cigarette, since the grill is right by the door.
I always cooked with a gas stove until I moved down south. I LOVE a gas stove, I find it easier to regulate the heat than an electric, but I suppose I'm just used to them since it's what I learned on. I'll trade you anyway
Up untill I was about 16, I had used nothing but Electric cook tops, when i first go a cannce to use a gas stove i chomped at the bit. Gas stoves/ovens provide a much more even temperature for cooking. and therefore, evenly cooked food.
Granted they are a bit more powerful than electric stoves, but that is why the dials are adjustable even more so than most electric stoves. That Being Said, unless you're boiling water you probably shouldn't have the Dial up all the way.
Using a gas stove takes perseverance and not every stove is the same, you'll have to work with it so you can understand what its capable of.
That being said, if you keep with it, I'm sure you'll come to find that your gas stove isn't scary, Its just misunderstood.
I grew up with gas stoves and I refuse to use anything else lol! I can see how they could take some getting used to though. If you're paranoid about gas leaking and not noticing (it does smell very distinctive so it's not likely you won't notice), you could go and buy a carbon monoxide monitor and plug it in your living room/bedroom. Those things are loud as hell and I'm sure having one will help your peace of mind as well.
