So, I moved out of my apartment on the 31st and was happy to do so because I did not like the management. The landlady is intimidating, the maintenance guys never actually 'fixed' anything (although they let themselves in plenty of times to mess around with the dryer or whatever, usually after one knock while I was showering, getting dressed)...Anyways I have been a little distracted with other things, I was paying my final statements for internet, electric, and I also mailed a 'rent' check to the apartment management. Except, it's June and I no longer live there. Now I wouldn't put it past them to cash it anyways and say they didn't know or make up some shifty reason to keep it (like damages that were already there before I moved in, or things that broke down they were suppose to fix). How should I handle this? Any advice on how to talk to these people and get my check back?
Edit: extra info- I'm a college undergrad and it's money I really really need. Also I have difficulty with times, dates, numbers. As an adult I've realized I might have dyscalculia which is like number dyslexia if that makes sense.
Put a stop payment on the check?
Like Jethros said, contact your bank and stop the cheque.
Yeah, it happens. Just call your bank and say you accidentally sent out a check that needs to be cancelled. If you have the check number, even better. (If you actually write them out and have carbon copies, it should be a number in the top right corner. It also usually turns up as the last series of numbers on the bottom, after your routing # and account #. Even if you don't have carbon copies, just look at your current check # and figure out how many back the fraudulent one was.)
The sooner, the better! Call them today if you haven't already!
please send me any/all and so I can keep them safe
