Hello there! My boyfriend and I will be taking a roadtrip together at the end of June to visit my father and his brother and sister-in-law a few states over.

It's going to be a fairly long drive, so we'll need something to do for entertainment! We've got some mix tapes, I'll be packing snacks, and we all love and loathe the alphabet game...

Anyone else know any fun games we could play in the car? Since we'll be switching turns driving we won't be able to do a whole lot... but doing something fun will help keep us sane on the road. xD

My friends and I always used to play Padiddle, where if you see a car with one headlight off, you say "Padiddle!" and punch the other person in the arm (or you could punch the roof of the car but that's nowhere near as fun).

One time my fiancé and I listened through a metal album and verbally wrote a really elaborate fantasy story that went along with each song. It had like a fairy army, royal conspiracies, and an arranged marriage to a dragon or something. Easily the best way I ever spent a few hours driving. The only downside is we never wrote it down D:

Maybe consider some audiobooks for times when you don't feel like talking or get tired of the same music. You can borrow them on tape or cd from a library and sometimes digitally from a library too.

Have fun!!

You could play The License Plate Game, where you try to spot license plates from as many states as you can. Whoever gets the most would win.

Ah, Piddadle is kinda' like Punch Buggy! (Whenever you see a Volkswagen "Beetle" you punch the other person in the arm!) I'll have to tell him about that one. Coming up with an elaborate story based on each song we listen to... That seems really fun! I'll be sure to bring a notebook to jot down notes... Matt really loves writing and fantasy himself, so this should be really fun! Audiobooks! I almost forgot about those. I'll have to see if I can find any good ones at the library. Thank you so much for all the awesome suggestions!!!

I vaguely remember playing that once!!! Oh gosh, adding that to the list too! Thank you! <3

@ Honey Here are some of the things my boyfriend and I thought of for our 6,000 mile road trip a few months ago:

  • "Answer a question with a question" game
  • Mad libs
  • 'Would you rather' or 'never have I ever'
  • 20 questions (or 'guess the animal' with yes/no questions)
  • Make up a story by taking turns (each person does a word or phrase)
  • Guess the movie/book quote
  • Have a conversation using only quotes or song titles/lyrics.
  • Change a word game (ie - P1: big bird, P2: blue bird, P1: blue cheese, etc.)
  • Look up fan theories on books/movies you both love and discuss them
  • Make up a new language And don't forget about podcasts! There are podcasts for just about anything (educational, comedy, story, etc).

Good luck on your trip!

Edit: I forgot about my favorite one. We'd go through the alphabet and try and think of words that fall under a certain category for each letter of the alphabet. For example, if the category was "things that are liquid," we'd either work together or take turns coming up with A- apple juice, B- balsamic vinegar, C- cocoa, etc. Other categories can be stuff like, things that are blue, book titles, things that are round, animals, etc. :)

Thank you!
