Long story short: my work is running key parts of the business on Windows Vista still and the other computer is XP (we won't even go that route.)

But since I've worked here, I've been telling the owner and the manager both that we need to replace the computers as soon as we possibly can because we're going to wind up out of luck with them - be it one day, one won't turn on; limitations on upgrades, etc.

I was right.

I hate being right like this.

Turns out that we have a major upgrade coming through on the main computer on the 19th and I was happily sitting up at my house on this past Monday afternoon and my phone rang. Cue "LIZ CAN YOU FIX THE COMPUTERS? WE HAVE A MASSIVE UPGRADE COMING THROUGH!"

My heart sank through my shoes. It was the call I was expecting to get but was hoping that it wouldn't come like this. I told my manager no, it wouldn't be possible and that I'd be there in five minutes. I went in, spoke with both my manager and the owner and they still were like, "WHAT CAN WE DO? OH PANIC." I told them both I'd research it and get back to them.

Come Tuesday evening, owner wants to order a computer but I've come to find out about the whole video card mess with dual displays (which couldn't not be had and has since been resolved/researched.) I told the owner exactly what we would need to do and from the second I left work, after leaving explicit instructions to call me if anything was amiss or not understood to call me, the owner called the manager and started freaking out again.

From 5:20 PM until my manager finally called me at 8:30 and went, "What did you tell the owner???" Turns out the owner quoted me completely wrong and got the manager upset (who is now looking at a funeral tomorrow on top of all this.) I told her again what we needed to do and that I'd be in the next day to happily discuss everything in great detail to her. Not excluding the fact that I had no idea how to do dual displays on a Windows 8.1 computer (do now), got a quote from Dell that was way over budget (owner doesn't want to spend anything to keep this place running) and I told the owner that I would charge $15 an hour for computer servicing (competition is $75/hr and not fair - they hold computers hostage and rack up fees.)

Owner balked at all that. Option is closing down, really. I finally got things sorted with the manager, the new computer is ordered and should be here either Saturday or Monday and I'm doing the computer work but FUCKING HELL, I TOLD THE OWNER SO.

SO HOW IS YOUR WEEK GOING? XD;

I think your managers need to get their heads out of their hindquarters, lol. My old boss was like that, exactly. Didn't want to spend a dime, you'd tell him shit was about to hit the fan, he didn't believe you, and then when the shit went airborne, he'd freak the hell out. Ugh. Idiot. My current boss is the complete opposite. She's intelligent, she listens, she's more than competent at her job, and she's just generally awesome.

My week though...has been busy as hell, but that's pretty normal. I did get my car this week, so that was awesome (traded in my 02 Taurus on an 11 Fiesta and I love it). Worked pretty much every day, which sucked because I didn't have much time to get ready for our garage sale until last night, where I worked when I got home at 5:30 until 2 in the GD morning. Then I worked the garage sale all day today, left there at 4:00 and I'm now at my job again, until 9pm. Then I'm supposed to work the garage sale tomorrow, but I really want to go to comiccon with friends. So...ugh, I dunno.

For Sale: Lots more FOR SALE HERE and HERE!

Ouch, you seem to have gotten the worst types as owner :/ At least you now have a solid example of when you've been dead on about something--it means they'll be more likely to listen to you for stuff like this in the future (even though it's really what they should have been doing from the beginning). If they don't listen to you for a second time, it's a reason for you to move on to better things, and a valid explanation if you're ever asked why you left your last job.

This week has been...kind of nice, if a little insane. University is well beyond driving distance from home, so my apartmentmates and I had to furnish our apartment right after finals. None of us have cars, so it involved lots of lifting and hauling, including kind of a funny moment when we were carrying a mattress across campus and were mistaken for protesters >.< That aside, all my classes just got our grades back for the final exams, and I'm happy with how everything turned out. :)

That sounds infuriating. As far as running an older OS goes, I understand running Vista on some computers, the ones not used for much of anything. But why would anyone use an older OS that isn't going to be supported by updates for important things? That's just waiting to create a situation like you went through. I mean, I know next to nothing about computers so I can't say much, but I would think that a business that heavily relies on computers would keep them up to date. Good thing they have you!

As for me, I'm currently congested and have a fading sore throat due to allergies. This doesn't help when trying to train an energetic Husky of approximately 4 months of age, who's main goal is to play tug of war with everything. Harness, leash, collar, various tool, a child's cup, etc. You name it and he's probably tried to use it as a chew toy. The biggest issue is getting him leash and harness trained before my boyfriend and I move, as we're scared he'll slip his collar if he pulls ( as he does, because Husky). On the plus side, the dog is getting all his shots up to date and so is my cat! So that's at least an easy thing to accomplish.

Collective ping since I've been really busy since I posted this: the owner actually basically outright said she wouldn't pay me to set up the computer since the owner's hubby would do it for free. Withdrew my offer of setting it up for her on claims of "not wanting the liability later," which I really don't.

For the bonus points this week: the aircon at work is broken and we're in the middle of a mini heatwave where I live. dies

(I did read all the other parts of your posts, I'm glad I'm the one that seems to be getting the brunt of the blehs.)
