As the gallery Hoader! achievement is due to be retired (eventually) I though of an idea that would be a nice replacement.

Maybe it would be possible to have an achievement for having 1,000 different items on your account (and then the various tiers).

People had asked for the Hoarder achievement to be changed and include items on your whole account already. I still support it, if possible.

I'm not really sure we need another massive hoarding achievement created though since that still encourages hoarding (I mean yeah, people who were going for the old achievement are already going to have progress and might hit it between all their collections and everything, but you're still going to need to have quite a few items in shops/galleries/vault/whatever instead)

I actually think it would be a really smart move to replace the current hoarding achievements with something like this. It discourages people from hoarding everything in galleries that are so big they can't be viewed, used, or things taken out of them without shutting down the site. It also discourages people from moving huge amounts of items from one place to another (like wardrobe to a shop/gallery, whatever) to get the achievements.

As long as the tiers aren't anywhere near 40k. I think we learned our lesson with that, haha.

(Although I still would like to have it visible, someplace, just how many items I do have on my account - both individual and duplicate. I know I could approximate it myself but ugh that's a lot of digging around and maths)

I would love it if it took into account just your TCs, Wardrobe, Collections, Vault etc.

I also support this. Sure, I have a lot of items spread around my account that I could probably put in a shop and get a few tiers of that achievement, but as far as I know, moving around massive amounts of items is quite the server strain. (or at least for me. every time I quick stock that many items I get a site is down page and huge lag.)

If it counted the number items all over your account then I wouldn't have to move things and cause unnecessary lag. shrug

This was already asked for when I made a thread about the achievement needing to be retired. Keith said he would look into it, or something. But I don't think he ever did. (wow also don't post on that it's super old)

Since he never did that, I've been literally buying doubles/triples of everything, so I can fill my hoard for the achievement. So this probably would affect me 2% at this point.

I like the idea to change it to the total amount of item in the account, not to retired, just to make a change for it.. because people are still working on the 40k, and to retired it now will be unfair for them, especially after they bought doubles and triples.. so just change the requirement, and that's it..

I always like to make the point that retiring any achievement is "unfair" to any person working towards it, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be retired. Esp this one, because it encourages something that is a strain on the system (massive hoarding of items into one place). Honestly, try opening a huge gallery that isn't categorized. (Spoiler: The site will go down. Always)

Giving an advance notice of the retirement is always a good thing (looking at you, Geek Quests :| ). So I feel like, when this does get retired, the people who are honestly working towards it can either finish it off or at least complete the tier they are on.

As I mentioned in my thread, even having the achievement account wide to include wardrobe, collections, books read, foods eaten, toys played with (idk know if this is a thing) still requires 5000+ items to be stored in a gallery. It's still hoarding. It's still straining the system.

As someone that actively goes after this achievement, I even think it needs to be retired. My hoard is almost at 20k unique items so yes a retirement would affect me, but I would rather see the site function better than have ... what, 2 or 3 more achievements? I mean, there isn't even a forum title attached to it. It's not that exciting. It's just a weird obsession.

So no, I'm not okay with a replacement to this achievement. I don't want any more hoarding achievements, and I'm sure staff doesn't either. However, I'm fine with this idea (account wide hoard) taking over the achievement until it is inevitably retired, but that is it.

I'm totally with you and understand you, I really want this achievement to go away and to finally sell my whole gallery and to be rich lol And yes a notice would be a good thing for those who works on it.

But it's too risky to retire it.

first, many users who likes to own every item in every place and they will still do it, so the system is not going to suffer less from the mass hoarding.

Second, many items will lose their value, from CS items to old plot items and the rest.. it will damage the economy..

So the solution for this stupid achievement needs to be smart and careful.

Well the hoarders who hoard with out the achievement are a different problem in itself. These people aren't going to stop hoarding or sell off their hoards regardless of an achievement retirement. The issue with this achievement still being in place is that it encourages new users and people who haven't started hoarding to do so. Without out, they may not have hoarded anything. Like me, if I didn't know this was an achievement, do you really think I'd be hoarding useless junk? All my expensive beanbags and plushies going to my hoard instead of my collections? All my TC items that I don't have doubles of going into it? No.

Also, you're assuming that people are going to sell these items off. I put my expensive items in my hoard also, but fuck to the no am I going to sell them. It's just a holding place until this achievement is retired, honestly. A lot of the items for the hoards is just cheap fodder. If you think a bunch of 300sP retired ugly wearables are going to ruin the economy when 500 of each of them are thrown into shops, then you're mistaken. And how are the pricey items going to "lose their value"? Yes, if people are throwing them in shops instantly and undercutting massively, which I highly doubt.
