You get the box the day/hour you joined by going to your "User options" dashboard.
Do I get all six (well, 4, i think i already had two) if i visit that section on that day?

Why would you get six of them? Have you claimed any box before?
One for each year I spent here? I have one in my inventory and I used one to change my name, but I remember I only once 'redeemed' them, as in went on some link and got them.

boxes that are due to you from past years show up at any time you visit the proper page, it doesn't need to be your day/hour/second anniversary. I always pick up my yearly box a few days after it's due, and this doesn't seem to matter.
If you think you're owed boxes, you should file a Ticket.
