This is an odd mix of a suggestion and a feedback with a question that would be fitting for a ticket, but I think it leans more towards a suggestion so I'm putting it here! I saw a blurb about it on an offsite blog and kept meaning to inquire about it.

(There was going to be a P&B bit to it too, but I just realized trees were finally taken out of our profiles xD It was a fair bit of a delay... which could've been fine, if there had been a purpose to it, as I'm about to mention.)

The feedback: I really liked how the new Luminaire trees system allowed me to take a moment to empty my inventory before the gifts showed up there. Since there isn't a fixed hour for them to open, it's great that people can finish their quests, put away the items they mean to sell and then go check what's under the tree c:

The ticket worthy question: I don't know details about how the new system works, but I'm presuming we only get our gifts when we click the presents link. What happens if someone is inactive / doesn't click the link / forgets about it, because holiday season is super busy and most users are casual players who probably don't expect many gifts? Do their trees automatically open at some point, or they risk losing their 2014 items when Luminaire 2015 rolls by?

The suggestion: Presuming gifts only get claimed when people click the link, I would suggest that trees would still auto-open after a short period of time. 2 weeks, maybe 1 month after Lumineve at most? Just so there's enough time for most people to claim their stuff at their own pace (then staff can address the following glitches) and for the New Year event to roll by. After this time, everyone else who hadn't collected their items would get an alert (the alert was so nice!) and the stuff would get automatically placed on their inventory, much like the previous system was. Until then, the trees could remain on the profile widget.

I considered opening a ticket before making this board, but tickets that require an answer from programmers typically take longer, so... just disconsider this if I'm completely wrong as to how the system is working now.

There's actually a Problems & Bugs thread that was made recently about someone who clicked the link after Luminaire and didn't get their gifts, and they were instructed to file a ticket for them. There was another link posted during Lumi by that claims to award you your gifts if it's the first time you visit it as well, but I'm not sure it works.

So yes, it'd be really nice if trees could auto-open, maybe at the end of the day on the 31st or something (though I'm mainly only suggesting that date because I'd prefer trees to be gone asap when they can no longer be used)

I like the auto-open suggestion and the reasons for it. I was a goofball saw the error messages in the comments on the News post and thought I'd been glitched, but I wasn't. I just was expecting my tree to auto-open once the glitch was fixed this year like they have in the past so I didn't even look under my tree until almost January.

Some folks have a tradition of gift-giving on 6 January, so perhaps not a 31 December deadline though.
