It seems to me that a lot (probably most) of the high score tables focus on cumulative scores. I don't really see the point in this. Unless you have been here for a number of years and playing said games daily, you will never get on the high score tables for most of the games. The competitive-nature has been taken out of it and it caters to long time players. On top of that, it is putting out sP into the system that really doesn't need to be there.
Such high score tables include: Random Treasure Maps Item Scramble Rock, Paper, Scissors Decanter of Indestructibility Thimblerig Krypts (Cumulative)
Actually, making this list, I think almost all of them are cumulative. I might have to list the non-cumulative games.
Anyway, let's take Random for example. The top "score" is in the 20 millions. There is no skill to this. It is based on luck (getting sP instead of items) and persistence (coming on every 1.5-3 hours to collect). I've never seen an arcade game have a high score table for the kid that played every day and got 1000 points each time, so why are we rewarding this?
In addition, we have the collection high scores. I have no problem with the plushie, beanbag, and sticker high score tables, since those collections are larger and take a long time to complete (if ever), but the pumpkin, pastry, and trading card high score tables need to go. These entire tables are filled with people who have the collection filled and the users on them change every day. It's basically pointless. On top of that, we have achievements for completing collections (minus the pastry collection, I believe, so maybe that should be added if not already). Again, it's also pumping more sP into the system that really doesn't need to be there. Item Hunt can also be added to this.
We also have the high score tables for things that aren't even available anymore: Trivia and the Reading Drive. The trivia achievement has 16 tiers. The reading drive "turn in books" achievement has 6 tiers with prizes. I believe there are also the 6 Pages for Alexander that came with prizes/titles. I do not think a high score table is also needed. Isn't that what achievements are for? Why even have these if people can't even participate/compete for top spots?
Lastly, please fix the relevant high score tables. Burrero Basket Bonanza is a one-game high score, but the table never updates, so people who should be on it aren't. Spectrail, another could-be-good high score table, doesn't even exist, even though there are achievements attached to it! A high score table for Omen Raiders also doesn't exist. I don't even understand how The Bug Game scores work. I'm assuming it goes by level reached, when it should be set to bugs squashed. I would also like some high score tables for Street Team and Ziara Raceway, please.
tl;dr get rid of cumulative high score tables; use arcade game high scores only
Don't support only because I'll lose high scores for two games I get 10k each for :P
But honestly I see nothing wrong with cumulative high scores.
I agree completely. The high score systems for many games are in desperate need of a revamp. Creating competitive (meaning achievable through skill and perseverance rather than seniority and luck) environments, I think, would popularize many of the games.
Also, since it's a similar topic, I'd really like to see a "personal high scores" page. That way people can try to beat their own scores. It keeps it interesting.
I agree. Medals or trophies could be better than sP for highscores... And turn them not cumulative, plz x_x
I think it would be neat if the high scores reset every month, or had a separate one that did reset every month.
I built out a cool high score system a few years ago that had cumulative and monthly reset scores. However, we never rolled it out because it was such a huge undertaking to update all of the games on the site. We went through and updated a lot but then we had issues and then nothing came of it.
Though, I definitely think that there is a lot of opportunities in the space - especially if we could tie together achievements, high scores, and even trophies
I support this. I love playing games to get on HST. One of the reasons that I don't really play the arcade games much is because of the lack of HSTs. The SP payout just isn't worth it for me. But, a trophy and a spot on the HST would definitely be something that I would go for!
I know that I am not really a big game player, but I wonder how many people do play the games daily and if a new HST/trophy system was put in place - would that amount increase?
Monthly high scores might actually get me to play games :) I love competition. And if there was monthly high scores for quests too that'd be cool. And maybe have the quest HS be something like total value or just total sP earned from that specific quest type so it's more of a luck based HS for everyone who does there quests everyday rather than just the total number done otherwise it'll be like the pumpkin/pastry collection and everyone who's active will have the same score >.<
