I'm using this post as a reference that the new 10 people ping limit is not a glitch and rather an intended change.
quote we have been told that there is indeed a 10 person ping limit.[/quote]
For those who didn't realize it yet, we can't ping over 10 names in any individual forum post anymore, unless the post is edited and previous pings removed.
I've seen many people struggling with their Luminaire gifts thanks threads, many of them didn't even know the new limit was in place. I've also seen people having similar issues when it comes to art shops, private CWs, active friends/acquaintances check, and multiple other situations where a person needs to contact a larger group of other individuals.
By putting such a limit in place, it doesn't effectively stop people from pinging over 10 names, it just makes it so they have to edit the post 9827989 times. And if it did prevent extra pings, then imo it would be a big loss of functionality in the forums.
I can only see this prompting the creation of MORE small and middle-sized ping groups, which I thought was something staff wanted to disincentivize?
I'm opening a topic because I'd like to hear more details about the reasoning behind this change. Is it causing some sort of server strain? Also, I really think this warrants at least a siteupdate ping. People don't know about it and we are losing pings to relevant threads.
ah well this sucks...I was hoping it had been a glitch DX
I see so many edits in my future LOL
TIME TO MAKE MORE PING GROUPS
I noticed that when I was making my thank you thread... the names suddenly stopped turning into links to let me know who was pinged... editing the post a dozen times always made me fear I was forgetting someone.
This has been the case for about six months, we had a lot of problems with spam (not regular users) and this was one way to solve it. Also each ping in a post increases load time (look up the user, if that user exists send them an event, and send it to node to send them a live event, etc) for pushing that post.
Like I've said a bunch in the past, it sucks that we have to limit these kinds of things but its the reality.

Well, I guess it's not so surprising it wasn't mentioned before, with all other bugs with pings on the new forums (people probably presumed it was another glitch). But I sure wish the limit was higher than only 10, maybe 20 or 30? And I do wish there had been a siteupdate ping :/
I wonder if the loading issues do get any better if people are continuously editing their posts to ping more names. It's technically the same work on the servers, but the fact that it's not going on all at once makes it better I suppose? It's unfortunate there isn't a better way to go around this, I sometimes think group pings with only a handful of people are a bit of a waste and could be addressed better via other routes, similarly to what we have with the "ping friends" button.
Crap...I didn't even know this was a thing and I obsessively monitor help, bugs and feedback. I guess that's why my thank you thread got so little attention. Will have to go back and edit it.

I'll ping some people here just in case anyone didn't know :c
(hi guys sorry for the ping spam!)
[edit] Oor maybe not, lol. Doesn't look like that worked
Boo on this change and boo on the spam that caused it.

This change seems rather... counter productive?
Like, from an active user prospective:
I mean I know in day to day interactions 10 might seem like more than enough, but that really depends on the forums. 10 wouldn't be so bad -IF- certain forums had unrestricted pings.
Forums such as: Custom Wearables, Advertising (yeah it's very easy to have to reply to more than 1 0 people at once in one post depending on the bulk of what you're selling-- especially since it's impossible to double post/break your posts up), Chit Chat, and Bragging Complaining.
Yep I tried to thank several people on a thread about getting luminaire presents but I don't think half the people got my thanks. That's just freaking dandy you know? This stupid limit probably made me look like an ass because those people didn't know that I thanked them because of this sudden unannounced limit.
God forbid I know more than 10 people on this site.
I honestly feel like this is the limitations on joining forum groups all over again. Encourage us to use the forums and interact but punish us when we try to.
I don't mind the limit so much, there's comes a point where if you're pinging so many users then it's probably time to ping a group forum vs. individuals. I see a lot of the distaste is coming from Luminaire thanks threads, which is once a year (and birthdays, special occasions mostly) so I don't feel a huge need to up the limit count. It does sucks that it had to come to this, but if it's keeping the spam count down then another post with more pings or editing an old post doesn't seem to be asking for much.
I came in here thinking this was going to be a "limit how many times a person can ping a group" and was ready to hi5 someone lol.
Why should we be punished when the majority of us aren't going to spam?
You know, from what I've seen over the years, most users will ping a bunch of people to thank them or whatever and they would put it under a spoiler. That seemed to work just fine.
Spamming is going to happen on any site, you just learn to ignore it and or punish those that abuse their rights.

Yea I don't like the limit either. What u have noticed is that I'm not getting pinged if more than one person pings me at different times in any given forum topic. It irks me because I then miss important (admits try sometimes nonsensical lol) things! :)

I really really extremely want:I understand why the limit is in place - I just wish it could be upped to 25-30. I think thats an acceptable amount.

The limit is also an issue in the Advertising forums. I missed a ping when the person trying to sell the items was communicating with over 10 people in a single post, and was lucky to have someone let me know my ping hadn't gone through. Especially when you're dealing with an sP transaction or even CSC if we're talking about R200 Advertising, to think that your trade has fallen through is a problem.
