This is a bit long but I think you need to know as much as possible. Also, I might not reply right away since m work schedule this week is weird.
About a week and a half ago, my internet was suddenly turning itself on and off for no apparent reason. it usually only did this when the weather was really bad and even that was rare. So I called the company and they walked me through some stuff like unplugging and replugging the router and modem. I finally made connected my computer straight through the modem and my internet was fine. Using the router again killed the internet entirely which is plausible since it is a bit old.
Thinking my troubles were over I called off the appointment with the cable guy. But then I suddenly noticed that the internet lagged terribly when trying to play flash games on Subeta. For a couple years now I've been able to play the flash games and watch Youtube videos at the same time with not much problem. A little bit of lag here and there but I expected that, especially with Burerro Bonanza.
But after all this trouble it's been practically impossible to do anything since the problem a week ago. Now If I try to play the flash games and watch YT the lag is so slow it takes me almost an hour what it used to take only a half hour. The first 15 minutes or so are laggy but tolerable but eventually it gets to the point the videos won't play at all. It'll chug for a few seconds then go to static saying there's an error. So I refresh but the same thing happens. The only thing that "fixes" the problem is to completely close the internet and re-open it and even that lasts for a couple minutes.
I've tried this in IE, FF and Chrome but it's actually worse in Chrome so I uninstalled it after a couple days. FF, Flash, and Java are all up-to-date as of last Thursday. I've updated and run Spybot several times, deleted temp files, cookies and temp files, ran several virus scans and even defragged as much as it would let me. I called the cable guy again and he installed a brand new modem. I'm on a 3-year-old Windows 8.1 Gateway desktop.
Please help me! I can't take much more of this and my brother will be staying with me during Christmas so he'll want to use the internet (I'll get a new router) but it'll be hell for both of us if this keeps up.
I tried the speed test and my speed is only half as fast as yours, and I don't generally have any issues. I wonder if the problem is to do with your computer - have you tried with another wifi device (if you have a smartphone or tablet try that, or borrow someones laptop etc.). If the other device is slow you know it's the internet, but if it's good then it's your computer. This may sound super simple, but have you tried restarting your computer rather than leaving it to sleep or logging out?
I always turn my computer off at night or if I'm going to work in the middle of the day. I've never liked leaving it on for hours and hours if I'm not around to use it. This seemed to happen out of the blue after the incident with my internet turning on and off. I've downgraded FF (using 33 instead of 34.4) and that's helped a bit but it still has some bad nights. I don't have any other wireless devices except my laptop but even if I tried to use it it wouldn't work because my router is pretty much dead and shuts the internet off completely if I try to use the net through it.
