So I'm out walking my cat at 5:30 this morning--pauses for crowd to aww--when I stumble upon a pile of ripped open packages hidden behind a fence on Dengate Rd. At first, I think nothing of it but then I step in for a closer look and I notice that they're all from different addresses from two side streets I live next to. There's no signs of a garbage truck and pickup wasn't until later today. Which left only one conclusion.
Some little shit stole these packages off their porches and stole the goodies inside. 😡
So at 7AM I call the cops and holy shit did I get the bitch crew. The first guy, didn't seem to understand the problem. "Hi I found these empty packages from all these different addresses," "Okay, what's in them?" ....😕 He apparently wanted to know what kind of packages they were but he didn't ask in a way that made sense to me and that's when he got a little terse.
"So what are they? Are they boxes, envelopes--" "Just... plastic packages. I don't have them with me right now." "Okay hang on."
So then he transfers me to the radio room and once there I barely explain anything before the radio room sent me to communications. Once there, I explained the situation, again and after 20 minutes of being on the phone, I'm told to call Canada post.
SIGH
So I do and I get a nice lady who asked me to fetch them. So I do but my phone is archaic, (Motorola Razr from 2001) so I couldn't hear her too well. All I could really make out was an order to take them to a post office or stick them in a mailbox. I decided to go to the post office but I had to wait for an hour because it was only 7:45 by now, but once there, the Indonesian man behind the desk wasn't all that understanding.
"No, we don't do this sort of thing." "But I was told to come here." "Yeah but we don't have procedure for this. You got phone?" "Yes?" "Okay, you call them back and tell them to talk to me and we'll see." "Okay..."
So I go off to the side and call back. The new lady (Leanne or Loraine I think her name was?) was super nice and was just as confused as I was. She was nice though; complimenting me on my good deed and took down everything and even talked to me about my cat (which won her mucho brownie points.) She even filled out a form that wasn't technically for this situation, because they didn't have one but she promised me someone would come and get the empty packages and it would be sorted out.
Except it wasn't. I got a call an hour later after I made the call--I had packages to mail so the trip wasn't a total waste but I just had got home half an hour prior to them calling--and they checked one tracking number that I could find. This lady, however, wasn't really helpful since she had me look at the tracking number and then asked if there were any others and I had to raise my voice and say, "Look, it says US Tracking No, insert number code here and there's a bar code. If that ain't it then I don't know what to tell you," only for her to finally say "Well it says it was delivered--"
So why the eff did you put me on the spot like this? Argh! Anyway, she then said "Well, it shows as delivered so our responsibility is done. I recommend calling the police and letting them know that someone out there is up to no good." "Okay but do you have anything that I can tell them so they'll listen to me this time? Because that's where I started and I was told to call you guys which then sent me on this wild goose chase in the first place."
Nope. She just repeated what she said before and I just gave up, hung up and called the cops. This time though, I was stern about it, "Okay, listen, I called around 7 this morning about a bunch of open packages I found--all with different addresses from the two side streets I live next to--and I was told to call Canada post. I did that and they originally had me return the packages to the post office, only for me to be berated for doing so. So I got on the phone with them again, while at the post office, had them fill out a report and I just got off the phone with them now, (cuz they just called me back) and they said that the packages were delivered but then why did I find all of these on Dengate? They told me to call you and that's what I'm doing. I think someone stole these packages and I'd like someone to help me please."
"Okay ma'am, no problem, let me get communications and they'll help you from there."
So I explain it, again to a very nice lady who actually listened to me and finally, FINALLY she linked us with the dispatch. She was very stern but not in a mean way, just a "Let's let cut the bullshit" sort of way. She even complimented me, saying, "after all that, the only sane and logical conclusion a nice, noble citizen can come to is that they were stolen, so let's send a PCR car out there, today, to her house, and have them check each address to make sure they got the packages."
And I don't think she was patronizing me so, YAY, I got a verbal but genuine pat on the head. XD I felt better.
I told the dispatch guy my home address and he told me they'd send someone here... But he neither told me when nor did I think to ask. D'OH! This was all about two hours ago, btw. I'm still waiting on the police car to arrive. S/He doesn't show up at 4PM I'm calling back. I've been up since 9PM last night. =___= Gettin' sleepy.
Oh and you wanna know the most painful part? As I was retelling all of this to mom--because this was just so crazy I just had to tell somebody--she said, "Oh they probably sent you down there to scan them and see if they were delivered or not."
Tick, tick, tick... BOOM! head explodes
AAAHHHHHH!!!! WHY DID I NOT THINK OF THAT?!!! WHY DIDN'T LEANNE?!!! WHY DIDN'T THE DUDE BEHIND THE COUNTER?!! IT'S SO LOGICAL! TOO LOGICAL! LEMONGRABNOISES
[edit]Called the precinct at five to four to see if he was coming, and they confirmed the guy was on his way. Half an hour later, he finally shows and I'm so tired, I forgot to show him the pictures I took of the scene. X_x I even fiddled with my tablet but he asked me a question and I put it away subconsciously. Ah well, he knows where they were found and he was a super sweet guy. (looks up Thank you.) Tiny little mouse of a person, very polite and I liked it when he reassured my hunch, "I'd just like to know if they were actually stolen and not just a waste of everyone's time." "Listen, I'm willing to bet dollars to donuts, they're stolen. The fact that they're all different addresses and all found in the same place that far away, there's no guessing."
You know they're serious when a cop swears on the almighty donuts. XD
Oh, and according to my step-dad that works the night shift at Canada Post, told me I got jerked around by the people on the CP phone line and that I should've been automatically directed to CP Security. X_x Great. Next time, I'll make him call. He's an employee, he should be able to get somewhere easier than I did. Hopefully though, there won't be a next time.
Wow that was quite an ordeal and a half... I'm amazed not more was done considering ... isn't it illegal to take other people's mail and open it. Pretty sure more could have been done about that. -shrugs- But hey very very kind of you to report such a thing, many people would have just ignored it and went on their merry way. Nice to see good people still exist in this world.
First off: A big thank you to whomever sent me the MKB! :D It was a lovely surprise to wake up to. 💜
Nope. According to this pencil pusher, it's no longer their responsibility once they dump it on the doorstep but I'm beginning to think it was just a front to get me off the phone because they've never had anyone aside from the parcel recipients complain about missing/stolen packages. siiiip
It's hilarious how people don't know what to do when confronted with a person doing the right thing. XD And while it's technically illegal, police treat it like a misdemeanor. Like scratching someones cars with keys or spray painting someone's house. Thank you. ❤
