It's a common practice in the Help forums to ping a mod to lock your thread after your question has been answered. I recently realized that I'm not sure why people do this. Did staff/mods request at some point that threads on this board be locked after the question was answered? Is it to eliminate some inconvinience to the first-poster? Or is it just a convention?

Thanks!

It isn't required, but it helps eliminate people from chatting on the board, which helps prevent it from taking up space at the top where people can quickly see topics that aren't answered

It also helps that people who have similar questions months later don't necro the threads just to say hey, I was just about to ask this.

Moreover, it prevents user to look it up and posting to it after 3 months (considered as spam and may get a warning)
