I am looking for advice from those who have dyslexia and are in or went to college or university.
I have auditory dyslexia. I am a pretty fast reader now-a-days and for the most part I comprehend everything that I read moderately well. I had my psych test done before going into post-secondary education.
I was just wondering, how did you do in college or university? What was your experience like?
I am honestly trying to figure out if my dyslexia really does affect me and my grades in any way as I have only managed to get C's and B's on my final grades. OR if its just me being lazy... which is totally possible or is it that I am not capable off getting higher marks?? I understand that every person with dyslexia is sort of different case by case but I am honestly just looking for some advice or something. I do get accommodations from my university such as extra time to write my exams but that's about it.
I am currently in a history program and plan on eventually doing a second degree in architecture or urban design. (wooo)
I scored super high on Matrix Reasoning (84) and I honestly have no clue how this is useful to me? I would really appreciate if someone could explain that to me,maybe? :S
To be honest, I get pretty upset sometimes about the fact that I have dyslexia. Its like a ghost that follows you around all the time. Its there but its not there and I am stuck with it for life which is the most annoying aspect of having it. I am constantly striving to be smart but I just feel like dyslexia hinders my goal all the time. It doesn't help that most of the time when I tell people " oh yeah- I have dyslexia" they usually reply with, "Oh so you're stupid!". Its degrading and I have received the same reaction from friends, elementary school teachers to university professors.
Just ugh. I could go on but I imagine you get the idea.

Hello, I dont know much about this but in Sweden you can get help from the University or college. all I know from a classmate who have dyxlexia is that she records everything she needs to know on sound files and by this she can hear it again the knowledge. also the technical stuff has come a long way. when she did test she used the computer, the microphone so she could speak and the computer translated her words onto the program so it become an essay or something similiar. isnt there a pen who can Scan things, use it on computer and the program Will read loudly? NO you are not stupid! You are clever as everyone else. Its just you need the right tool to understand the written words. Those who call you stupid has no clue what you are talking about having this sort of matter. Thats all I know about technical stuff for making it easier for persons with dyxlexia to get help.

I personally believe that dyslexia can mess with grades. I have it to a degree in writing, but I have it in a more serious way with math.
The scores I got on my HISET exam were not up to par with what I can actually do in writing and reading. And my math scores suffered severely even though I do pretty well math-wise in classes. I haven't started college yet, but I've just sort of figured out that it's messing with my scores. Even with wearing tinted glasses it's still really difficult to not do things backwards or write problems the wrong way.
Some universities and colleges do have programs for dyslexic students, which I am going to get involved in when I start school. Like I said earlier, black and white can be difficult for people with dyslexia to read, so I wear tinted glasses. Everyone has a different color that helps (mine is like purple/rose/pink), so maybe try overlays? They are pretty cheap online and some schools even offer them if you haven't tried that! :D
EDIT:
Also, I understand people saying stuff. I got laughed at in classes a lot for it and it's just really hard. I'm sorry that happens. :(
I have dyslexia, though I haven't been to a doctor to diagnosis how bad. (My father has it, and I've talked to other people who have dyslexia...they say i also have it). I never got any accommodations, because i'm stubborn like that.
I have a really hard time writing....so bad. I've been told I shouldn't even be in college with my 'writing skills'. For example, In my senior level class in Geophysics, I had to read this science journal article and write a 2 page criticism. My professor asked me if I even took 'English comp 1'. Then lowered my grade from an A to a C, telling me the content was great but the wording was horrible. I told him what was up, and he let stuff slide.
Made sure my profs knew what was going on.
I had profs telling me how smart I was and If I was going to get my masters. But on the same token, other profs ask me if I was even trying. (2.8gpa near graduation)
What I ended up doing, is for every 1 hours of study a normal person did....I did 2 hours (for example). I pushed myself twice as hard to overcome this, because I wasn't about to be held back by MYSELF. also what helped me, trying different ways of studying techniques and figuring out what worked for me. Normally it was memorization, and I would have to start much earlier than others. I tried flashcards (didn't work), flat out memorizing (kinda hard), my best way was getting all the stuff I needed on one paper and studying so when I was in the testing room I'd remember 'looking' at the paper rather than the information on it.
If you wanna make As, its gonna take a lot of hard work. I made As in 5 classes this semester, but I was spending most days studying. Also, try maybe taking only 2 or 3 classes a semester and seeing if that helps. Take 2 and FOCUS on those two, spend over the amount to study and then...maybe.
You're NOT STUPID. In fact, its shown that many people with dyslexia have a higher IQ. Albert Einstein WAS DYSLEXIC!!! Here is a list of famous people that are...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_people_diagnosed_with_dyslexia
I hope this helps!
