I agree it's vandalism, I really don't know what they were thinking. Very disrespectful and of course illegal.

I think Greenpeace flounced their way into utter irrelevancy a long time ago, and if this isn't solid proof of that then almost nothing is.

It does seem a little hypocritical on Peru's part to get upset about footprints, considering there's a highway running near (and through) some of them.

Not really? To the best of my knowledge, not all of the glyphs are located on protected sites - there are literally hundreds of them, and not all of them are considered significant enough, or have been preserved well enough over the past couple of centuries, to be declared national treasures worthy of protective measures.

The glyph that was damaged here - The Hummingbird - is the most recognizable glyph of them all except for, possibly, The Monkey and The Spider. It is one of the most well-preserved glyphs and had not suffered much, if any, damage since its creation over 2,500 years ago. Until this month, that is.

They have every right to be pissed off. Saying that they don't, just because some less-defined or more severely damaged glyphs aren't give the same "respect," is like saying that the American government wouldn't have any right to be angry if someone went up to the Lincoln Memorial statue in Washington, D.C. and whacked its nose off with a sledgehammer, because "There are lots of statues of Abraham Lincoln that have already been damaged! This one isn't special!"

I was gobsmacked when I first saw that story. Greenpeace have always been..... rather brutish and tend to not plan ahead or think about the consequences of their action but damn, that's taking the cake.
