Can they be pounded without changing species?

I started zapping pets in the pound for fun and just got a bumbus, pretty nifty so i want to throw the pet back in the pound for someone who wants a bumbus. But I recall a species changing into a kumos when pounded, is it the bumbus or something else?

I'm fairly sure they can't be pounded without changing into a kumos. It's the same with Bhakoru too, from memory.

They should be able to be gifted away though, possibly?

They will turn into a Kumos if you abandon them, but you are able to send them to a friend. I created a Bumbus for a user at one point when I actually had open slots lol

I decided to just keep zapping because finding an adoptee for a random bumbus is probably quite hard :p I hoped i could just pound, too bad.
