hello! i recently painted my ruffie angel, and for some reason the active pet widget in my sidebar is not updating: is it supposed to remain like this, or do i need to wait for it to update?

You may need to wait for the cache to update! Other than that, if you had another pet, you could try switching active pets to someone else then back to the ruffie and see if it updates. But since that's your only pet it would probably be best to give it time.

No problem! Sometimes the cache takes a while to update, this applies to changing your human avatar's outfit too, sometimes I change my outfit and it takes ~30 minutes for it to show up right.
