I just inherited my mother's Meyers Parrot. Just curious if anyone else has or has had one? Any ideas on the best diet/brand of food for them? She's currently on a seed diet, I'm not positive what my mom had been feeding her (she passed away in September, so I can't ask her), so before I brought her home I just bought her parrot seed. Been doing a little research and I'm finding a lot of people saying Meyers should be on a pellet diet, and that they can eat pretty much anything nutritious we eat. I've been giving her a scrambled egg in the morning along with her seed and giving her little bits of other stuff throughout the day, like grapes and corn. I'm not sure how old she is (my mom got her from someone else and I can't recall when that was :/) but she seems to be very happy and healthy.
Go ahead n brag about your birds. Or if you have any helpful information about Meyers Parrots that'd be awesome lol n.n But bragging is cool too. I love birds.+
(please ping me if you reply, I forget I post something way too much -.-)

My girl, Patches
BUDGIE LOOK, BIRDS!
I feed all my birds a combination of roudybush pellets and seed, along with vegetables and fruit.
I have heard that pellet wise harrisons is best but they're also pricey since they're organic.
Also, both and own birds... so random pinging because of that. XD
What kind of birds do you have? I know on your other post you mentioned cockatiel and parakeets, do you have any others? I know certain breeds take to different kinds of diets so I'm just curious.
Oh, I only have the one cockatiel and one parakeet. The other parakeet I had which was my still remaining parakeet's cage mate flew away at the beginning of this month and I haven't managed to get him back. ;-;
Anywho, as far as I know unless they're the nectar based birds like the lories, roudybush or any similar type pellet should be fine for your parrot.
I usually feed mine a mixture of parakeet seed, pellets, and random fruits and vegetables and during the summer sprouted seed.
also lafeber's nutriberries as treat and the standard millet.
Forgive me if this is info you already have, but it's worth risking repetition haha. Candles, cigarettes, incense, windows, fans, a/c units and vents, cologne/perfume and pretty much anything that could be remotely similar are your enemy haha. Birds in general tend to be just ridiculously fragile in terms of anything respiratory.
Mirrors are also kind of risky, but not so much for health reasons. If you have time to be really social with the bird and want to be pals you will want to consider avoiding the mirror deal because they can end up being friends with the mirror and hate you for stealing them from their mirror-friend haha.
Again, sorry to chime in with basic stuff. Sorry to hear bout your mother passing. Warm thoughts.
Errrrrr is one fine chica but unless we're counting her, I don't own any birds D:
hi there i actually had a meyers parrot growing up c: and he still lives at my gran's. i also worked in a pet shop for a few years ahaha. you should move him onto a pellet diet slowly by introducing mixes. go from 80-20, 70-30 rule. seeds are actually not that great for this breed of parrot T-T, it doesn't contain the essential amino acids that they need that can be found in pellets. DO NOT move them straight onto a pellet diet, introduce it slowly by either mixing or having a bowl of seed and pellet available. seed diets are kind of like mcdonalds for people in the same way it is for birds. its okay as moderation not a diet. im european so i cant recommend brands :c that would be present in world wide. vegetables and fruit should be 20% of the daily diet too but never ever avocado because this is super super toxic, also avoid things like blueberries because they can cause indigestion. try to keep varying the fruit and veg you give them because meyers are super super fussy little children who will refuse things very often xD and only eat one thing.
egg is okay in moderation, its a treat item but try stuff like sweet potato, apricots, banana, spinach. meyers like root veggies alot
im the cutest bird ok

I could of sworn one of the other min mods owned a bird. XD
Apparently I was mistaken or delusional
sorry...haha.
Ohh okay. I'm sorry to hear that :( Was he clipped? If so he may be nearby somewhere. Yea, I wish I knew what my mom had been feeding her, I'm pretty sure it was seed and some other stuff, but I don't know >.< We used to have a lori.. we rescued him from someone who fed him seed for a long time :/ He was blind, but the funniest bird we had for sure.
Haha, yea I know ^-^ I don't mind being told again though, means people out there worry about the welfare of animals. My mom had a lot of birds way back when, I helped her a lot with them and hand-raised a few with her. I'm by no means an expert but I know a decent amount.
I'm gonna look a little more as to what pellet brands my local pet store has and then introduce it slowly to her. I didn't know that about seed diets; thank you! Like I said, I know a bit but definitely not an expert which is why I've been looking it up and asking here n.n Aside from the fact that I love birds and pets should be taken care of properly, she was my mom's last bird so I want to take care of her as best as possible and have her live a long and happy life.
Nope, he was fully flighted. I knew it was a risk keeping him flighted though. I know he joined a flock of sparrows outside right after he flew outside because for a couple days I could hear him outside, but he never came down though, and after about day 10 we stopped hearing him calling. D: My other parakeet is flighted as well, but a big homebody though.
Ahh. There are pros and cons to keeping a bird flighted and clipped. Obviously Idk how your first parakeet got out, but you may wanna consider clipping the other, just in case. At least if he is clipped and gets out, there's a greater chance of being able to get him since he won't really be able to get anywhere unless he catches a good gust of wind. But that's my opinion on it. My Meyers I don't think has ever been clipped, and she spends quite a bit of time outside of her cage.. at my mom's house there was no issue because she stayed in my brothers room and he, being a typical teenager lol, spends a LOT of time in his room with the door shut. At my apartment though she's in the living room and we're on the second floor but before I open up her cage I make sure all of my windows are closed and locked. My mom was never a huge fan of clipping birds in case they ever did get out, so they'd be able to get up in a tree and stay out of danger's way.. except for her larger birds, like her macaws or African Grays, so that they couldn't fly through the house and hurt themselves by flying through her narrow hall or anything like that.
Ah yeah, they were always in my room prior but something freaked him out and instead of flying back to his cage like he usually did he flew out. In the past, even if a door was open he'd usually just fly around and then fly back to his cage. My cockatiel is clipped but that's mainly because his previous owner clipped him before giving him to us.
Hello! Late but, I'm another bird person! :P
I have two parakeets. I would love to own a slightly larger bird and different species someday, but I don't have the space for more, and don't think I could keep larger birds because they need a lot more attention (and live for a long time!).
I have two feisty girls. I should have gotten a male instead of a female the second time because females are territorial. I keep them separate, but they come out to play together in the evening.
Anyways! Food wise - pellets are actually hard and expensive to find in my area. If I do find a petstore that has them, they maybe only carry one brand. My girls are on a seed diet and I mix fresh and dried veggies in between. I tried feeding them all veggies a good number of times, one of my girls was getting so angry about it she threw the food everywhere and was trying to flip the food bowl over! XD They both like dark greens, like spinach. I feed them lettuce, like the dark parts of romaine lettuce, but not too much as it is too watery for birds. Broccoli, peas, green beans, squash, celery, parsley. Especially during the winter time I don't have easy access to fresh stuff so I get some items that keep for a long time like dried veggie mixes, dried greens, and sprouting seeds. If you are patient and into doing an elementary like school project try the sprouting seed mixes. They are also very healthy.
I don't have my girls clipped, they are contained in my room and all doors are closed when they come out. I notice they are much happier and out going when they can fly.
Oh, you were the other minimod with birds. XD
Totally got the wrong mod, haha.
Also, as a sidenote, I buy all my pellets online since the local petco doesn't usually carry the brand I buy so that's an option if you don't have immediate access to bird stores.
I have a Citron crested cockatoo and an african grey both my boy have seed in the bowls for snacking on during the day. They get toast in the morning for brekkie they also get their veg peas brocolli cauliflower, corn on the cob,I also make them parrot bread one made with veg and the other with fruit.
They will eat a bit of raw carrot sometime during the day the grey loves his food the cockatoo is more fussy he is not a big fruit eater.I will give them a boiled egg sandwich once a week they also eat celery stalks. If you want the recipe for the parrot bread let me know and I will smail you the recipe it is easy to make and can be frozen.Try looking up the species of parrot you have to see their like and dislikes.
