People being stupid/unaware/etc. thread time!
This just happened the other day and another thread reminded me of it so I wanted to share this story.
I was at the local medical centre's blood lab for a test, sitting there with number 50 while number 45 was being called up for their paperwork, ID, etc. I figured it wouldn't be too long; everyone's usually efficient because obviously they do this day in and day out so it's routine. The lady at the desk runs through the usual, "Paperwork, health card, etc.," in a friendly but detached way. Because of the recent Ebola crisis there's a new question: "Have you been to Africa in the last 30 days?" Still, she's obviously asked enough times by now that it's purely routine and she gets the same, routine answer. She's running through the numbers and it's all, "No." Then this one guy comes up.
LADY: Have you been to Africa in the last 30 days? GUY: Yes.
...
LADY: Are... you joking? GUY: No...?
The lady asked him some more questions and the guy said how he'd gotten back October 17th and that he'd been "just above" the main area where the Ebola crisis is happening.
Immediately she's getting flustered but she was trained in the medical centre's protocol for this so she asked him to step into a side room and got a mask on him and got on the phone with several different people. While she's doing this we're all just waiting and keep in mind this is a busy spot, with mostly seniors. I'm surprised (and glad) that nobody panicked since people are so worked up about this.
Well, eventually another lady starts calling the rest of us right back into the area where they take blood and I didn't see this next part but my girlfriend told me about it since she had been waiting with me.
See, the guy came out of the room, no longer wearing his mask and said, "You know, I have to leave soon!" He was told to go back into the room and put his mask back on while they got word on what they were supposed to do now.
What a colossal friggin idiot. He walked into my city's main medical centre, having been to West Africa in the last 30 days and doesn't see a problem with that. He went in for blood work and was surprised that everyone there was going, "Wtf dude?!"
I'm certain everything's fine but really. It's like he's been living under a rock, being surprised that people would be freaked out by him strolling in for a blood test after having been to West Africa recently. Apparently the nurses went ahead and did his blood work but of course they wore hazard suits and special gloves to do it.
So... anyone else want to share stories of people being idiots?
People like him don't belong in a civilized society, seriously.

That's crazy. Hopefully they found out if he actually had Ebola or not via the blood work? That's really lucky that there wasn't a panic though, that would have been just awful.
A few months ago I was in the city on a trip with some college friends, and we were trying to decide on a movie to see. Lucy was the only one that a majority could agree on, and I wasn't too keen on it because of the whole "humans only use 10% of their brain" myth (when I saw the trailer and they said that, it was one of the most massive eyerolls in my life).
When I brought that up, one girl asked me why that bothered me, "because it's true!" I told her that it was a myth, but she kept going on about how humans are just made that way despite medical evidence showing we make use of all parts of our brains. It's scientifically proven! We have visual, MRI evidence that shows that we make use of all of our brains. I got kind of worked up about it, and she started trying to make me look like an ass in front of my friends by saying things like "Why do you care so much?" I care because you're spreading misinformation?
In the end, she just decided that she was going to "choose to not believe" in something that has been proven by scientific study. I really can't stand when people do that, because someone bothered experimenting and studying to prove or disprove something, and you just choose to ignore it because you don't want to "believe" in it? It's not even a theological issue, it's your brain!
I think they were going to do testing for that. So far there's been nothing in the news about any diagnosed cases. He claimed he didn't have any symptoms and he didn't appear to, although some people might be able to carry it without symptoms so you never know. Yeah, I'm glad there wasn't any panic.
AUGH, people like that drive me up the wall! Wow. Yeah, I rolled my eyes so hard they almost flew out of my skull when that trailer was on, especially with Morgan Freeman being the one saying it. Somehow that made it worse. Was Lucy good despite that, though? I never got around to watching it because the trailer put me off so much.
People can carry the virus in their system anywhere between a couple days and a couple weeks without showing symptoms, at least that's what I've heard. I'm glad they took it seriously and had proper coverage considering they were dealing with bodily fluids, even if he wasn't showing symptoms. Better safe than sorry.
I enjoyed it! I don't usually pay attention to cinematography, but the way they did it in Lucy was very interesting and it stood out to me. It held my attention while it slowly progressed to being more and more surreal with the way Lucy's use of her brain manifested. the score is pretty great too. I think it's worth a watch. I honestly wasn't going to watch it because of the trailer, but I'm kind of glad I did.
I imagine he probably saw it as no big deal because he knew he didn't have it. Ebola is spread through bodily fluids, like HIV(plus saliva), so it's fairly easy to protect yourself from and tell if you've been exposed. It also is not contagious unless symptoms are present, and if he wasn't worried, he probably wasn't symptomatic.
This, of course, is assuming he was clued in about the virus in the first place! I may be giving him too much credit, lol. XD
The part about the mask is kinda funny though, as the virus isn't airborne, and unless he'd planned on biting someone or spitting in their mouth(VISUALIZE IT O.O), covering his wouldn't have made a difference.
[edit] As for the "humans only use 10-11% of the brain thing(I've heard both versions), I have been hearing that all over the place! How on earth did this misconception get so popular? XP
