I got hired at a fast food-like chain that just opened back in August. It's not a new chain, they have been around for quite some time, but this is the first time they are in this town. Anyway, I was hired and extremely excited - I finally had a job that wouldn't be stuck by myself in a little area on a computer all day.
A few months have gone by. My hours have fluctuated. I've gone from being full time (35+ hours a week), down to 5 hours a week. I'm full time, said I am available from open to close, and I can get to work. I went from 35+ hours, to 25, 20, 15, then to 5. All over the course of three months. I called in today to get my schedule, and they just told me I'm not even on it.
I was told that they are trying to schedule everyone accordingly, but I'm not the only one. I've talked to my co-workers, and a lot of them said that their hours have being cut drastically. Unlike them (luckily), I don't have children and the only bills I pay at this moment (due to this predicament) is my phone bill. The real kicker is that they have hired a bunch of new people.
I asked my managers if I'm doing alright in terms of work, and they have told me that I am. They did mention that they wish I could move a bit faster, but they understand that I messed up my legs a couple of years ago, so it can get difficult at times. I do try my hardest there, and I was put onto the most stressful job there (in my opinion). It's not a super hard job, but it is the most stressful one, and I get put on the hours where we are the busiest.
I am looking for a second job now (after I got told I wasn't even on the schedule) and I'm just frustrated about the whole ordeal. Does anyone have any advice?
To be perfectly honest, my advice would be to look for another job entirely. Once you get it, quit your current one. It would be fine to work two jobs if you could get at least 20 hours or so at this place, but 5 hours (at minimum wage, I'm sure) isn't worth the gas money. Fast food/retail places are notorious for treating their employees like garbage.
Well, I would definitely find a new job, firstly. There's no need to work only 5-10 hours a week, when you can probably find better. I work at Taco Bell right now. My boss keeps hiring new people and cutting hours for others as well. It sucks. But you just have to keep reminding him that you need your hours back, or that you find it unfair. I do about 30 a week now, which is good enough for me currently because I to don't have many bills to pay since I live with my parents currently (only 20.) but if I ever got hours THAT low, I would definitely have either brought it up and it gets fixed or if it doesn't I would start job hunting. Even if it is at another fast food job, I'm sure they would give you better hours.
Hopefully your boss listens to your issues and everything gets resolved.

Thankfully, I'm not treated like garbage...that much at least. :I I'm currently looking for a second job, and I forgot how difficult it was to find one. Thank you for your advice. (:
(fyi, I love your username. :D ) I have talked to my boss about it in the past, and they just shrugged me off about it. I don't have many bills to pay, but I still like having some money saved up in case something happens to me and I need to go to the doctor or help out my dad. Thank you for responding. I'll try talking to them again, and see if there is another reason why I'm getting 5 hours a week.
[Thanks!] It's just odd how they can even find it acceptable to have someone only work 5 hours a week honestly. :S I agree with Magic though as well, it probably isn't worth the gas money either. Well, if he shrugs it off again, I'd just be like "Here's my two weeks notice then!" lol. :p But seriously, hope everything works out for you. ^_^
