I think you're right about that. It was 2010 when I was in London and I don't remember the holiday feeling particularly political or historical (kind of like how Fourth of July is now in the US) but I do remember going to Parliament Hill and learning about Guy Fawkes being thwarted. I've never seen V for Vendetta either.

Quick wiki search said he was trying to kill the king because he was protestant and not catholic. And bonfire night was celebrating that he was stopped

If I recall religion is a common reason why rebellions happened throughout history, because the leaders of countries and kingdoms had different religious beliefs from their people.
