For the past couple of months, my sleeping schedule has been so out of whack and I've tried everything to fix it. I stay up all night and sleep all day. Yesterday, I finally went to bed around 6am and I woke up at 5pm. I absolutely HATE sleeping all day and I have never, ever slept that late. Then I was depressed because I felt like a loser and wasted my day away. I'm a college student and luckily, most of my classes are later in the day, but I still want to fix my sleeping schedule. I've taken over the counter sleeping medications and they do not help me, at all. Any suggestions from anyone?

I don't really know if this would help, but if you don't want to waste your day sleeping, set your alarm clock so that you are sleeping at least 8 hours. Then, start working and tired yourself out. Keep doing this cycle and your sleeping cycle should slowly go back "normal" or the way the best works for you.

I'm having trouble with any kind of a schedule right now, sleeping, eating, you name it. I'm unemployed at the moment and we just moved, so everything is different. I've been working all day, unpacking things and trying to organize the new house. In between doing that, I've been running to the store to get things I need - curtains, linens, etc. So you'd think I'd be tired, but I still have trouble sleeping. It's actually been better since I bought a new memory foam mattress topper, because it makes my bed so fucking comfortable that I fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. Maybe something like that would work for you?

Also, you should really try to force yourself to get up at a certain time. Since you don't have to be anywhere until late, I'd try getting up at a reasonable hour, maybe 10 in the morning? And then make sure you have things to do during the day so that you have as few 'sit still' times as possible. If you're going to sit and do your classwork, go to a coffee shop or library to do it - some place where you wouldn't sleep. Getting in some physical activity during the day would help too - walk a mile a day or go to the gym, something to get you up and moving. Also, trying to make your meals regular and healthy will help loads as well. If you don't take a multivitamin, that would also be a good idea. I know when I was in college, I never ate well or regularly, so a vitamin was a must.

Maybe staying up through another day and going to bed at the time you'd let to reset at would help?

Maybe try some Sleepytime tea to get you in the mood to sleep on time?

Ha, I have to admit I dont have any advice, but I can commiserate with you~ my sleep schedule has been completely backwards like that for the last several months and it sucks. I hate being up all night. Like right now it's almost 4 in the morning and do you suppose I'm even a little bit tired... NOPE but I wish I was, I'm super creeped out being up all night by myself and it's annoyinggg.

Earlier this year I kinda had it under control because I was taking this medication for my stomach twice a day, and got in the habit of doing it at about 6 and 6 every day. But it wasn't doing any good so I stopped and now I'm back to whatever this is. :I blahhh I think its partially because this apartment is like a literal cave??? They call it "garden level," which means it's built into a hill and the windows look out at grass-level. So basically it's dark in here all freakin' day and you can barely tell when it's night anyway.

I mean at least I tend to write really well at night sooo I've been up doing my NaNoWriMo stuff but its still mostly just frustrating :V

Hm, I'm honestly in the same boat also, . I go to bed around 2 or 3, and I don't go to sleep until 3 or 4, basically an hour later. My problem is that I feel like I have no reason to be awake during the day, as I'm currently not employed and I don't have any classes to go to (financial issues, lol). No one is home during the day except me. My parents don't get home until 5 p.m., and my boyfriend isn't around to talk to until 8 p.m. so I don't normally wake up until one or two in the afternoon. I'll admit, I have issues with depression so this heavily impacts it, but at the same time, if I know I need to be awake early, then I go to bed around 10 or so at night. I may not sleep until 12 or 1, but I try to get to bed early, and in turn I get up early.

The main advice I have, is if your issue is with falling asleep in general, no matter what time you go to bed, try to do something like reading before bed, or playing a simple repetitive game. What I do is I play my DS before bed, a game like animal crossing or maybe pokemon where I can do repetitive things with the music and screen brightness at a low setting. Eventually, I start to play with my eyes closed, and boom. I've fallen asleep with my DS in my hands more times than I can remember x) But yeah, this with the advice other people have given so far might help you out c:

I've never ever had an easy time falling asleep my entire life, but that's the one thing that works for me. You'll find a niche eventually and you'll have a more normal routine. If all else fails, you could technically just work night shifts? That's what I'm planning for me anyways, hehe c:

- I always try to set an alarm to wake myself up early. Usually, I sleep right through it or my sleepy-self will turn it off and continue sleeping, lol. I work a lot in a restaurant as a server, so I'm running around a lot for 3-5 hours. I feel physically tired at the end of the day, but my mind constantly races.

- If I could afford a comfortable memory mattress, I KNOW that I would be sleeping a lot better and earlier, lol. I'm a server, so I definitely get in some walking. I do have a gym membership and I've been meaning to start using it again. I'm just physically tired at the end of the day, but my mind is like 'nah, lets think about all this shit'. I do have a weird eating pattern, so I definitely need to work on that. Vitamins sound like a good idea too. I'm going to try and force myself out of bed, I'm just so sleepy T___T Thanks for your advice!

- I've tried to do that, but it makes classes/work unbearable. If worse comes to worse, I'll try that on one of my days off :)

- As much as I love sleepy time tea, it just does not make me sleepy at all. My body is weird, I think :P

- I was thinking about going to the doctor, but I don't think I technically have insomnia or a sleeping disorder. I always stayed up late, like 2or 3am, but now, it's around 6am before I finally go to bed. I may go to a doctor anyways, to see if any other things could have made my weird sleeping schedule worse. I just want to be one of those morning people, where I can get up, enjoy a cup of coffee, do some homework, etc. But I wake up late, no coffee, rush to class and go to work afterwards. Although my days are short because of sleeping all day, I feel like they're rushed and by the time I get home, I don't want to do ANYTHING after having to deal with asshole customers from my shift >__>

- If you don't mind me asking, do you take medication for your depression? I've been on and off medication since I was 18 (I'm now 22) and was thinking about going to the doctor about possibly getting back on medication, to see if that would help. I thought I somehow "beat" depression, but lately... it's been pretty bad. I do have a DS thats collecting dust, so I will have to try that. And I do need to read, so I'll try that, too. Thanks!

I usually stay up pretty late, and it gets unbearable at times and just resetting it like that usually does the trick.

Hmm, I'm in a similar situation although not nearly as bad! I always stay up until 1-2am which is problematic because most mornings I have to be up at 6.30-7am, so I'm not getting nearly enough sleep. :/ I put my late nights down to stressing and worrying about essays, uni, deadlines etc. Could you be stressing over things, which is causing you to stay awake? If this is the case, try writing a list of things you have to do (might look bad initially if the list is long XD), and start doing stuff and crossing it off :) It might even help to just have it all there to look at. Idk, I think its helped me today and in the past when I've been particularly stressed, with back pain, random outbursts of crying and being a great big bundle of stress in general, haha.

You might find it easier to fall asleep at a decent time with less hanging over your head.

Like you, I've been on and off with it, but lately, due to insurance problems, I had to stop taking it. It seemed like /sometimes/ the medication helped me, but since I also had to take medication for anxiety along with it, I felt wiped out and zombie-like 24-7. Now I just feel like I have no reason to be up during the day so I don't really even make an effort to go to bed early. I've never been a morning person anyways. My bf and I stay up talking until one or two in the mornings sometimes because he works a late shift, so that doesn't help either x)

I used to always just stay up through the whole day and go to bed that night. But lately if I have issues I just set an alarm to wake myself up earlier and stuff so that I don't sleep as long, and will get tired out sooner in the day. Then I'll end up going to bed at a decent time uwu Hope you're able to set your schedule straight !

I alternate working day shifts to graveyard shifts every week and I have such a hard time getting back into a sleeping schedule. Its a real pain in the butt. The only way I can get back onto a day schedule is to stay up through the day when I would normally sleep (or vice versa). Luckily I get weekends to recover and try and form some sort of wacky sleeping schedule. I also take sleeping pills when I just cannot fall asleep when I need to. I hate it but sometimes I just need to sleep, I can't do my job while I'm tired. I don't have much advice, except that sometimes even when you aren't tired its better to just lay there absolutely bored and rest as opposed to staying up and doing things. I also find that playing Solitaire or Sudoku on my found really just knocks me out for whatever reason!
