I would like to bring up the topic of music on pet profiles. c:

Being able to add music to our pet profiles can really enhance mood in our stories. The music can be entirely instrumental, or not. There are so many times I stumble across mood music that would be perfect for a pet profile of mine.

But let's realize how obnoxious that could be. You pop open a page and BAM OMG MUSIC YOU DON'T LIKE OR WERE EXPECTING. Maybe your ears are ringing from having your volume higher than you realized prior to opening the page. What a nuisance.

To solve this issue (because I completely agree that this would be an irritating thing to deal with while visiting profiles), maybe we can have play, stop, and pause icons on the page, similar to these guys. It would be even cooler if they could be moved, customized, resized, etc. so they don't diminish the look of the profile. This gives users the freedom of adding music and visitors the option of experiencing it.

Now there's the issue of giving credit to the artists of the music. We would need to give credit to the artists the same way we give credit to those who create our profiles or create artwork for our pets. We would need to be held accountable for it in the same way, as well as making sure it sticks to the PG-13 limitations here on Subeta.

Anyway, I'd love to hear some thoughts on this. I'm not even sure if it's possible to pull off. Maybe I've been totally oblivious and people already do this. Personally, I'd love to add music to me pets' profiles, especially if visitors had the option to hear it or not. It would add an extra touch to my buggers' stories. ❤️

Sometimes I fantasize about being able to do this, to be honest. I guess you mean like being able to encode a music player? But No autoplay allowed. Please. I recall the very old days of neopets when people could code songs onto pet pages and such, I used to do it... But I think Internet Explorer is the only browser that supports that method, I can't hear anything in firefox like that.

People usually just put a link to a song on pet profiles but I'd really love to be able to put a music player there. I know there's a user around here that composes music specifically for pet profiles and those who have gotten compositions would probably like this idea.

As amazing as this would be I have a feeling people would abuse it. Now if there's an option to have music NOT show up at all (without the need to click play, pause, ect.) then that would be fine. Kinda like the option to stop autoplays on youtube videos on user profiles. If that can be an option for those who don't wish to have the music play then I'm fine with the idea for those who do want to use music for their pets.

That is a wonderful idea. I would love that to be a possibility to a few of my pets who have a theme song. I agree the music buttons would work so much better than embedded auto-plays that make you blush at a school work station. Or wince and shut the page fast because the library PC's don't have accessible speakers, they are just always on. Customizing colors and location would be thrilling! To give them the same colors or elements as the pet profiles theme.

this suggestion just makes me think back to the time users figured out how to bypass the 'no autoplay' option on profile youtube vids, and to this day i can still name like 3 or 4 users whose profiles i refuse to visit out of sheer spite stemming from that situation.

i'd only warm to this suggestion on the basis that autoplay was off by default, but even then i don't trust subeta's coding enough for it not to be bypassed by someone determined enough to thrust their musical choices upon the unsuspecting masses.

i'm wary of this, really; can't say i support it.

If autoplay can most DEFINITELY be kept off and no user tries to hack this situation, I'd be fine with it.

This is actually something you can make a ticket about and staff will have it removed from their profile. I don't think it's technically warnable (which it shouldn't be), but it shouldn't be possible and it's beyond obnoxious and they will take care of it for you cc;

That said, I would only warm to this idea if autoplaying was flat out disabled and anyone cute enough to code around that WOULD be given warnings for it because wow there's only soo many users onsite but there's millions of pets. And when I'm feeling frisky and creeping on pets (that doesn't happen much, but it sometimes does when I find a person who has fun ideas), the last thing I want to deal with is 30+ different songs suddenly autoplaying at the same time.

Really though, I'd prefer to see the site just leave that pandoras box tight and not ever put music on pet profiles.

No support. While it's not a bad idea as such, I feel like it would cause too many problems.

I usually browse the web with Winamp playing on the side and any kind of autoplay garbage gets my jimmies rustled. People found a way to get around the "disable autoplay" option on user profiles in the past, but even with that issue being resolved now, I feel like this would be messy to implement and messy to moderate. Moderators already have their hands full with bigger things and Subeta doesn't exactly have extra staff to throw around willy nilly.

On sites like tumblr that let you add a music player on the page, it just makes the page load for ages for me and often makes my browser freeze up. Not fun if you're using using an old computer, or if you're browsing on limited bandwidth.

If you want to have music on your pet profile, link to a youtube video. Cleverly disguise the link as a picture of a music player that opens the link in a new tab. Bam, there you go. Optional music for your pet profile added in a way that doesn't make anyone cringe.

I completely agree that autoplay would really ruin this feature.

I think if there's a way to completely ban autoplay coding/options and put total control in the visitor's hands with the play/stop/pause buttons, that would help the feature from becoming obnoxious.

But perhaps keeping it off the site entirely is for the best. It would just be really cool. xD

i haven't actually seen it happening for some time, but that's still some handy knowledge to have going forward 👍

but ok moving away from my arbitrary dislike of autoplay, what i wonder is how much time/effort would have to go into coding a feature like this vs. how many users would actually use it. if it's something a programmer could easily spin up in an afternoon then whatever, do it and i'll turn it off and it won't be a big deal. but if it's going to take a lot of time and focus, maybe it's worth looking into how many users will actually use the function vs. who will immediately turn it off from launch.

I... don't like this idea. If you want music to accompany your pet's profile, stick a link in there to YT or soundcloud or whatever the cool kids are using these days.

It could be made something like the Anonymous gifting - if you send a nasty message in the box, you're banned from using the feature. Similarly, if you by-pass the "no auto play" you could be banned from using that feature, too. For this situation, however, there wouldn't be any chances, either. Don't follow the rule, instant ban.

I don't mind the thought of having music on pet profiles at all, though...with the exception that it doesn't slow Subeta down. I have a really old machine and it's hard enough for me to play on Subeta. I don't need even more slowing it down for me. I'm sure there are many others in this same situation as me.

However, In the meantime, you could always link to a youtube video to be played with a note suggesting something like, "for a better experience please click the youtube video link and listen to the music as you read." It might be a better thing than implementing an MP3 option into Subeta. Better yet, maybe a youtube video could be put onto the pet profile like they have the option for on your profile, only this time limiting it to a single video.

If there was a 100% sure-fire guaranteed way to prevent Auto-play I'd be all for this.

I can remember back in the day putting music on pet pages, user lookups, pet lookups and all sorts of stuff on Neo and it really did help to set the mood for the pets.

I don't care one way or the other. I just plan on linking the songs. But if it was implemented, please ban autoplay or warn people who get around that ban or something like that.

Side note: Speaking of autoplay, can we PLEASE get rid of the autoplay on SUBETA GAMES?! That shit is stupid :|

I'm not a fan of this idea, considering that songs can easily be linked to, I don't think coding a feature to make playing songs even easier on a pet's page is needed.

YES. I wish to report games so they can have their autoplaying privileges revoked because it always scares the crap out of me and I don't like it ;___;

So many people mentioning the time it would take to program this and here I thought it would just be as simple as allowing the use of html5 on pet profiles. Which has a built in tag for video and audio.

Anyway aside from autoplay being the spawn of evil (and then people making it worse by placing the player somewhere you can't find it) I do think music would increase loading time a bit. And yeah, a link at the beginning of your story linking to the music would do the trick.

Specifically for autoplay I don't support this, because I don't want to hear your(general) potentially garbage taste(opinion) in music. It is equally possible someone could listen to my music and think it's crap. Everyone likes different music and if I wanted to listen to music I'd listen to a play list, rather than being scared to death by some song that starts blaring the second I view someones pet profile. Also who would do the quality control on this say what is to stop someone from putting a really offensive song on their profile, yes you can report it once you've heard it but I'd rather not hear it and have the choice whether I listen to it or not. I think leaving it as a link for if someone wants to hear it is fine and should stay as is.

As an aside I also hate the autoplay of music on the games it's annoying, I'm usually always listening to music or a video .
