I know the site is trying to be more PC (I acknowledge that the use of the term PC may not have been correct and perhaps I should have said something like more thoughtful.) and I'm wondering if some of the witch items on site should be changed.
Witches have always been depicted as these green, warty hags but are they in fact practitioners of Wicca?
I don't think we have many obviously offensive witch items
Then again is anything that stereotypes pointy hats offensive?
I am not Wiccan so I don't know how much they are offended by the term but maybe it is something to consider.
Thanks for bringing something else up that could be bothering people!
I got into the religion for a bit and ultimately didn't find my place there. The items wouldn't personally offend me, but I'm not sure about others.
Holy. Mother. Frick fracking paddy whackin. Crap.
No, just no. Unless you personally know someone who was executed in the witch trials in the 17th century you really have no reason to be offended by this. Like seriously, if we were to be politically correct as possible Morostide wouldn't exist. Pirate related things wouldn't exist. So many things wouldn't exist trying to appease every little group possible.
Shit happens to everyone. Some people don't like the color red. Others don't like lady bugs. It's not the site's job to monitor this. If a Wiccan is offended they can adblock the images or switch them to something else. It's people's jobs to take care of themselves first and foremost. Subeta taking unnecessary and extra steps to accomadate these people is incredibly kind and thoughtful and generous, but not required.
tbh, all I can think of now is the and one these plushies existing for as many things that users can possible get offended by.

Comparing Wiccans to the Romani is really NAGL. The stereotypical folk depiction of witches goes back much farther than Wicca does, and Wiccans are not an oppressed minority.
Also, I really hate the idea that trying not to be racist or promote racist stereotypes is just about being PC when it's really about, you know, not being racist. The difference here is, once again, the fact that Wiccans are not an oppressed minority.
... Please, for the love of all that's holy and good in the world, don't turn Subeta into Tumblr v2.0.
Seriously? Seriously?
Subeta makes a step towards not being shitty to minority groups, and you turn it all in to a joke?
Basically
Yeah I think maybe we should not make threads about "Hey I'm not sure if it does but this sort of thing might offend someone" and stick to pointing out things that are obviously offensive and should be changed :x
Oh lord it's starting.

Sorry, but no. The popular, stereotypical 'Halloween' witches and Wicca/Pagans are entirely different in culture. Wicca don't fly around on brooms and summon the devil. Should we start banning vampire items because some one with sun allergies might feel insulted? Maybe wolves will get offended by werewolf items. WILL THE MADNESS NEVER END?!
As a balloon lover, I am offended by the description for because it mentions balloon popping, and balloon popping makes me sad.
And because it implies I would steal an innocent balloon's hat.
Won't someone think of the balloons?
They're not even being serious. They're making a (shitty) joke because gypsy was rightfully changed
Man I do hope it's a joke lmao
You have GOT to be kidding me right?
also the word witch is actually germanic in origin, just as an FYI :)
... Not sure if joke thread or.. not..
On one hand, I thought this was going to be a suggestion thread in regards to new cool witchy items we could have onsite. Like spell/hex books, cursed objects, more crystal balls that aren't obviously cartoony, summoning tools, and stuff. So, kinda disappointed.
On the other hand... Wicked. Which is probably where the green face came from?
I'm not a wiccan either, though, so I can't really say what they might be feeling about these. But unless one feels so inclined to step up and talk about how green faces is a racial slur I feel like idk... a burning female tied to a cross while being named "Satan's Harlet" would be extremely offensive and worth bringing up, while a green faced balloon that looks exactly like Elphaba is probably splitting hairs.
It's not like the clothes existing is offensive in regards to the recently changed dancer attire because historically speaking the traveling romani people wore brightly colored clothes. It's one thing to change an offensive word, but this is just ???
Reminding everyone to not personally attack, before this gets too out of hand.
Kind of a harsh response from the people here. isn't exactly the type of person to be spamming up forums or making dumb suggestions, so I really doubt she was trying to make a joke here.
I could see this reaction is the thread were created by some more notorious people, but geesh, it seems like she just trying to be a little (probably on the unnecessary side) cautious and helpful for subeta.
i feel like there is a very bold, prominant line between "subeta is no longer using racial slurs" and "everything is offensive to someone, slippery slope, PC police, etc etc," and to try and equate the two points really does not... look good...
but in specifics to this thread, the depiction of witches as ugly old crones is a trope that's centuries old in the making. the green skin association, on the other hand, seems more modern (and seems to have picked up in popularity with the golden age of cinema/theater).
wicca, on the other hand, is a modern religion that was introduced to the public in the 50s, and whose history does not trace back anywhere prior to the 20th century. witchcraft as a concept is far, far older than wicca.
so instead of combing through what could potentially be offensive to a theoretical group, let's let the actual offended parties speak for themselves, as was the case with subeta's extremely necessary decision to drop its romani appropriation. i know in the past, people had spoken in passing of how subeta's use of the term "gypsy" made them uncomfortable, and i'd be lying if i wasn't one of them, so that particular change was perhaps one long overdue. on the other hand- and correct me if i'm wrong- i don't think i've ever heard of wiccans having a beef with how subeta (or the media in general) portrays witches as green-skinned crones. maybe it's just my personal experience, but they seem more to embrace it than anything, idk.
Thank you for your constructive criticism. Thank you for not belittling my suggestion. Thank you for not swearing and being otherwise rude. Thank you for not going off on a tangent of vialness. Thank you for not personally attacking me. Thank you for making subeta a safe place to have ideas and opinions.
