I am so proud of her for doing this. We do need gender equality. Everyone should look to Emma as a role model.
Emma Watson is amazing. I wish more celebrities were like her
Great speech! Shame so many people are hating on her because they don't see that men are lacking certain rights as well. We need gender equality for BOTH genders.
I feel like I'm the only one who found the entire speech to be.... particularly lackluster. I have no strong feelings for Emma Watson despite being a huge Harry Potter nerd. I guess it's a step, though. : p
Thank you SO much for posting this!! I'm a huge fan of Emma Watson, and not a huge fan of Harry Potter movies, gasp. Well to be fair I am 59 and I didn't grow up with HP as most of the folks here on subeta did, and I'm not much into fantasy. I DO however have a great appreciation for the books and for JK Rowling and also for the amazing and wonderful casts of the movies. I am a huge movie buff, it's simply not my genre. I saw Emma in The Perks of Being a Wallflower and I LOVE that, so that's a bit about my take on her as an actor--no gender terms for me, I consider ALL people who act as actors, and don't care for the term actress, it's sort of like referring to an unmarried woman as Miss, I was NEVER a miss, and always a MS. Thank the goddess that the term Ms was invented just in time for me!!
Now, as a young woman who's representing this HeForShe Campaign in the UN, I'm jazzed about it. I'm a feminist and I agree that many ppl don't understand the meaning of that term, so I'm glad that she actually read the definition. I think she's an absolutely eloquent speaker and if her delivery seemed lackluster I believe it was only that she was SO nervous that she was having a difficult time with being passionate about her presentation. Think about the responsibility of a woman of her age standing up there in front of a huge delegation of ppl who are probably an average age of 45 or 50, and also the fact that ppl have certain expectations of her to be a great performer. Giving a speech live is totally different than making a movie, where it's OK to make a mistake and do another take.
I think she rocks and I'm SO glad that she's doing this. She's got a lot to be proud of, she's a college graduate and a seasoned actor and she's only about 25 or 26, right? I'm not surprised that she's a feminist, and I'm so very very happy that she's doing this. What she said about doing your part is very big. I've spent my life having people think that I'm "bossy" as she said (and a bitch) because I'm an outspoken woman, and I was born in 1955 so being a feminist in the 70's was REALLY being a weirdo, but I come from a LONG line of strong Irish women who were feminists before the word was popularized. So, again, thank you for posting this. :)
