A friend kind of inspired me to create a pet based on a character from a book we're writing--Yineput (Yinny) Reid. Without going into too much detail, she's a high school student who is basically a kind of modern-day shaman working with animal spirits. She can see the spirits of dead animals, and at their request, honors their remains by cleaning their bones. She works with roadkill and bones found out in the woods--she gets "called" to seek them out for cleaning and honoring.

She also owns several pelts and tails, though these are purchased rather than found. (She still lives with her parents, and while they're okay with the bones, they draw the line at skinning and tanning.)

Sometimes, after its remains have been tended to, the spirit moves on, but sometimes they stay around. She has a rather large menagerie in her bedroom, mainly of North American-native fauna (deer, fox, raccoon, possum, wolf, etc) as well as a couple of domestic animals (dogs and cats). She also keeps two pet, living rats.

I've made up a wishlist here of some things, but I feel like there's more I could add to it. I'm avoiding most feathers and bird-related items because it's actually illegal to possess the remains of most wild, native bird species in the US--shaman or not, she doesn't want to break the law.
